The standard model (SM) of particle physics effectively explains most observed phenomena, though some anomalies, especially in the neutrino sector, suggest the need for extensions. In this Letter, we perform the first global fit of elastic neutrino-nucleus and neutrino-electron scattering data to further test the SM within a consistent framework. Our results on the neutrino charge radius, the only nonzero electromagnetic property of neutrinos in the SM, show no significant deviation, indicating no large beyond the SM flavor-dependent effects for electron and muon neutrinos. By incorporating solar neutrino data from dark matter direct detection experiments, we also place the most stringent constraints on the tau neutrino charge radius obtained from neutrino scattering experiments. Additionally, we determine updated constraints on the vector and axial-vector neutrino-electron neutral current couplings, adjusting for flavor-dependent effects and for the different experimental momentum transfers. The global analysis reveals two allowed solutions: one close to the SM prediction, and a degenerate solution that is favored. We show that future dark matter detectors could achieve sufficient precision to resolve the degeneracy. As we move toward the precision era, this Letter demonstrates the crucial need to properly account for flavor- and momentum-dependent effects to avoid misinterpretations of the data.

Standard Model Tested with Neutrinos

A search for the dimuon decay of the Higgs boson is presented based on <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mi>p</mi><mi>p</mi></math> collision data recorded by ATLAS during Run 3 of the Large Hadron Collider, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mrow><mn>165</mn><mtext> </mtext><mtext> </mtext><msup><mrow><mi>fb</mi></mrow><mrow><mo>−</mo><mn>1</mn></mrow></msup></mrow></math> at <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mrow><msqrt><mrow><mi>s</mi></mrow></msqrt><mo>=</mo><mn>13.6</mn><mtext> </mtext><mtext> </mtext><mi>TeV</mi></mrow></math>. To enhance the sensitivity, the results are combined with those from Run 2. An excess of events over the background is observed with a significance of <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mn>3.4</mn><mi>σ</mi></math> (<math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mn>2.5</mn><mi>σ</mi></math> expected). The best-fit signal strength is <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mrow><mi>μ</mi><mo>=</mo><mn>1.4</mn><mo>±</mo><mn>0.4</mn></mrow></math>. This result provides evidence for the <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mrow><mi>H</mi><mo stretchy="false">→</mo><mi>μ</mi><mi>μ</mi></mrow></math> decay with ATLAS data and offers a direct probe of the Higgs-boson Yukawa coupling to second-generation fermions.

Evidence for the Dimuon Decay of the Higgs Boson in <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mi>p</mi><mi>p</mi></math> Collisions with the ATLAS Detector

The observation of a wide peaking structure in the <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><msubsup><mi>B</mi><mi>c</mi><mo>+</mo></msubsup><mi>γ</mi></math> mass spectrum is reported using proton-proton collision data collected by the LHCb detector at center-of-mass energies of 7, 8, and 13 TeV, corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mn>9</mn><mtext> </mtext><mtext> </mtext><msup><mi>fb</mi><mrow><mo>−</mo><mn>1</mn></mrow></msup></math>. The statistical significance over the background-only hypothesis exceeds seven standard deviations. The width of the observed structure is larger than the expectation from a single-peak hypothesis, and is well described by an effective minimal model consisting of two narrow peaks located at <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mn>6704.8</mn><mo>±</mo><mn>5.5</mn><mo>±</mo><mn>2.8</mn><mo>±</mo><mn>0.3</mn><mtext> </mtext><mtext> </mtext><mrow><mi>MeV</mi><mo>/</mo></mrow><msup><mi>c</mi><mn>2</mn></msup></math> and <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mn>6752.4</mn><mo>±</mo><mn>9.5</mn><mo>±</mo><mn>3.1</mn><mo>±</mo><mn>0.3</mn><mtext> </mtext><mtext> </mtext><mrow><mi>MeV</mi><mo>/</mo></mrow><msup><mi>c</mi><mn>2</mn></msup></math>. The uncertainty terms are statistical, systematic, and associated to the knowledge of the <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><msubsup><mi>B</mi><mi>c</mi><mo>+</mo></msubsup></math> mass, respectively. The measured peak locations are in line with theoretical predictions for lowest excited <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mi>P</mi></math>-wave <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><msubsup><mi>B</mi><mi>c</mi><mo>+</mo></msubsup></math> states, marking the first observation of orbitally excited beauty-charm mesons and providing important insights into the internal dynamics of hadrons containing two heavy quarks.
