The sterile neutrino interpretation of the LSND and MiniBooNE neutrino anomalies is currently being tested at three liquid argon detectors: MicroBooNE, SBND, and ICARUS. It has been argued that a degeneracy between <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mrow><msub><mrow><mi>ν</mi></mrow><mrow><mi>μ</mi></mrow></msub><mo stretchy="false">→</mo><msub><mrow><mi>ν</mi></mrow><mrow><mi>e</mi></mrow></msub></mrow></math> and <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mrow><msub><mrow><mi>ν</mi></mrow><mrow><mi>e</mi></mrow></msub><mo stretchy="false">→</mo><msub><mrow><mi>ν</mi></mrow><mrow><mi>e</mi></mrow></msub></mrow></math> oscillations significantly degrades their sensitivity to sterile neutrinos. Through an independent study, we show two methods to eliminate this concern. First, we resolve this degeneracy by including external constraints on <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><msub><mi>ν</mi><mi>e</mi></msub></math> disappearance from the PROSPECT reactor experiment. Second, by properly analyzing the full three-dimensional parameter space, we demonstrate that the stronger-than-sensitivity exclusion from MicroBooNE alone already covers the entire <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mrow><mn>2</mn><mi>σ</mi></mrow></math> preferred regions of MiniBooNE at the level of <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mrow><mn>2</mn><mo>−</mo><mn>3</mn><mi>σ</mi></mrow></math>. We show that upcoming searches at SBND and ICARUS can improve on this beyond the <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mn>4</mn><mi>σ</mi></math> level, thereby providing a rigorous test of short-baseline anomalies.

Toward a Robust Confirmation or Refutation of the Sterile-Neutrino Explanation of Short-Baseline Anomalies

Within a chiral SU(3) model, the quark condensates are obtained from the medium modifications of the nonstrange and strange scalar-isoscalar fields (<math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mi>σ</mi></math> and <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mi>ζ</mi></math>), and the scalar-isovector field, <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mi>δ</mi></math>, whereas, the gluon (scalar and twist-2) condensates are computed from the in-medium value of the dilaton field, <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mi>χ</mi></math>, which is incorporated within the chiral model to mimic the broken scale invariance of QCD. The mixed quark-gluon condensate <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mrow><mo stretchy="false">⟨</mo><mover accent="true"><mrow><msub><mrow><mi>q</mi></mrow><mrow><mi>i</mi></mrow></msub></mrow><mrow><mo stretchy="false">¯</mo></mrow></mover><msub><mrow><mi>g</mi></mrow><mrow><mi>s</mi></mrow></msub><mi>σ</mi><mo>·</mo><mi>G</mi><msub><mrow><mi>q</mi></mrow><mrow><mi>i</mi></mrow></msub><mo stretchy="false">⟩</mo></mrow></math> is calculated from the in-medium quark condensate <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mo stretchy="false">⟨</mo><mover accent="true"><msub><mi>q</mi><mi>i</mi></msub><mo stretchy="false">¯</mo></mover><msub><mi>q</mi><mi>i</mi></msub><mo stretchy="false">⟩</mo></math>. The splittings of the masses of the <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mi>D</mi><mo>−</mo><mover accent="true"><mi>D</mi><mo stretchy="false">¯</mo></mover></math> (<math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mi>B</mi><mo>−</mo><mover accent="true"><mi>B</mi><mo stretchy="false">¯</mo></mover></math>), as well as <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><msub><mi>D</mi><mi>s</mi></msub><mo>−</mo><mover accent="true"><msub><mi>D</mi><mi>s</mi></msub><mo stretchy="false">¯</mo></mover><mo stretchy="false">(</mo><msub><mi>B</mi><mi>s</mi></msub><mo>−</mo><mover accent="true"><msub><mi>B</mi><mi>s</mi></msub><mo stretchy="false">¯</mo></mover><mo stretchy="false">)</mo></math> in the hadronic medium are due to the odd part of the spectral function. For the strange-charm (strange-bottom) mesons (<math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mo stretchy="false">(</mo><msub><mi>q</mi><mi>i</mi></msub><mo>,</mo><mi>i</mi><mo>=</mo><mn>3</mn><mo stretchy="false">)</mo><mo>≡</mo><mi>s</mi></math>), the value of <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mrow><mo stretchy="false">⟨</mo><msup><mrow><msub><mrow><mi>q</mi></mrow><mrow><mi>i</mi></mrow></msub></mrow><mrow><mi>†</mi></mrow></msup><msub><mrow><mi>q</mi></mrow><mrow><mi>i</mi></mrow></msub><mo stretchy="false">⟩</mo></mrow></math> dominates over the contributions from the other operators, <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mo stretchy="false">⟨</mo><msup><msub><mi>q</mi><mi>i</mi></msub><mi>†</mi></msup><mi>i</mi><msubsup><mi>D</mi><mn>0</mn><mn>2</mn></msubsup><msub><mi>q</mi><mi>i</mi></msub><mo stretchy="false">⟩</mo></math> and <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mo stretchy="false">⟨</mo><msup><msub><mi>q</mi><mi>i</mi></msub><mi>†</mi></msup><msub><mi>g</mi><mi>s</mi></msub><mi>σ</mi><mo>.</mo><mi>G</mi><msub><mi>q</mi><mi>i</mi></msub><mo stretchy="false">⟩</mo></math>, of the odd part of the spectral function. This is observed as opposite behavior of the particle-antiparticle mass splittings with the mass of the particle to be larger (smaller) than the antiparticle mass in nuclear (hyperonic) matter. The density and isospin asymmetry effects are observed to be the dominant medium effects which might have observable consequences on the production of charmonia and open charm mesons, and, on the production ratios, <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><msup><mi>D</mi><mo>+</mo></msup><mo>/</mo><msup><mi>D</mi><mo>−</mo></msup></math> and <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><msup><mi>D</mi><mn>0</mn></msup><mo>/</mo><mover accent="true"><msup><mi>D</mi><mn>0</mn></msup><mo stretchy="false">¯</mo></mover></math>, in asymmetric heavy ion collisions in the Compressed Baryonic Matter experiment at FAIR at the future facility at Gesellschaft für Schwerionenforschung (GSI).

Open heavy flavor mesons in hot asymmetric strange hadronic matter: A QCD sum rule approach

A search for a pseudoscalar $\textit{a}$ produced in association with a top-quark pair, or in association with a single top quark plus a $\textit{W}$ boson, with the pseudoscalar decaying into $\textit{b}$-quarks ( $$a\rightarrow b\bar{b}$$ ), is performed using the full Run 2 data sample using a dileptonic decay mode signature. The search covers pseudoscalar boson masses between 12 and 100 GeV and involves both the kinematic regime where the decay products of the pseudoscalar are reconstructed as two standard $\textit{b}$-tagged small-radius jets, or merged into a large-radius jet due to its Lorentz boost. No significant excess relative to expectations is observed. Assuming a branching ratio $$\text {BR}(a\rightarrow b\bar{b})=100\% $$ , the range of pseudoscalar masses between 50 and 80 GeV is excluded at 95% confidence level for a coupling of the pseudoscalar to the top quark of 0.5, while a coupling of 1.0 is excluded at 95% confidence level for the masses considered, with the coupling defined as the strength modifier of the Standard Model Yukawa coupling.

Search for a new pseudoscalar decaying into a pair of bottom and antibottom quarks in top-associated production in $$\sqrt{s}=13$$ TeV proton–proton collisions with the ATLAS detector

A novel Bogomol’nyi–Prasad–Sommerfield (BPS) bound for the Gross–Pitaevskii equations in two spatial dimensions is presented herein. The energy can be bounded from below in terms of the combination of two boundary terms, one related to the vorticity (but “dressed” by the condensate profile) and the second to the “skewness” of the configurations. The bound is saturated by configurations that satisfy a system of two first-order partial differential equations. When such a BPS system is satisfied, the Gross–Pitaevskii equations are also satisfied. The analytic solutions of this BPS system in the present manuscript represent configurations with fractional vorticity living in an annulus. Using these techniques, we present the first analytic examples of this kind. The hydrodynamic interpretation of the BPS system is discussed, and the implications of these results are outlined.

A Bogomol’nyi–Prasad–Sommerfield bound with a first-order system in the 2$\textit{D}$ Gross–Pitaevskii equation

Using a holographic prescription for the Schwinger-Keldysh closed time path, we derive the effective action for a dissipative neutral fluid holographically described by the Einstein gravity in an asymptotic AdS spacetime. In the saddle point approximation for the dual gravity, the goal is achieved by solving the double Dirichlet problem for the linearized gravitational field living in a complexified static AdS black brane background. We adopt a partially on-shell scheme for solving the bulk dynamics, which is equivalent to “integrating out” the gapped modes in the boundary field theory. The boundary effective action in the fluid spacetime, identified as the partially on-shell bulk action, is computed to first order in boundary derivative and to cubic order in AdS boundary data. The boundary effective action, rewritten in the physical spacetime, successfully reproduces various results known in the framework of classical hydrodynamics, confirming our holographic derivation.

Holographic derivation of effective action for a dissipative neutral fluid

We describe the calculation of integrated subtraction terms in the nested soft-collinear subtraction scheme for hadron collider processes with quarks and gluons, thereby extending the results presented in ref. [1]. Although this extension eventually proves to be straightforward, it requires a more careful treatment of certain collinear limits to achieve a compact and physically-transparent final result. We also show that the cancellation of infrared divergences can be organized in such a way that, once soft contributions are removed, it occurs independently for each of the external partons. We consider these results to be important stepping stones on the way to deriving finite remainders of the integrated subtraction terms for fully-general hadron collider processes in the context of the nested soft-collinear subtraction scheme.

Towards a general subtraction formula for NNLO QCD corrections to processes at hadron colliders: final states with quarks and gluons

We study the supersymmetric structure of the spin current in four dimensional $$ \mathcal{N} $$ = 1 supersymmetric theories. By coupling the stress tensor multiplet to a vierbein multiplet we identify a spin current with the Hodge dual of the bottom component of the stress tensor multiplet in a wide range of theories. This implies that in holographic theories the Hodge dual of the $\textit{R}$ current may serve as a spin current, paving the way for holographic studies of theories with background torsion.

A supersymmetric spin current

Braneworlds inside an AdS black hole provide simple models where a closed cosmology can be encoded in a dual field theory. Previous studies have focused on pure-tension branes, where the only matter in the cosmology is that dual to the holographic bulk. We consider models with additional explicit matter fields on the brane. Both for perfect fluid matter and for an axion field on the brane, we show that this can avoid a self-intersection problem in the Euclidean construction of such geometries in higher dimensions.

Cosmology inside a black hole: adding matter on the brane

We propose a revised formulation of General Relativity for cosmological settings, in which the Einstein constant varies with the energy density of the Universe. We demonstrate that this modification has only phenomenological impact of providing an effective dark energy density expression. Assuming a state close to vacuum, here defined by the vanishing product of the Einstein coupling constant and the Universe’s energy density, we perform a Taylor expansion of the theory and hence extend it to the whole domain. In this framework, the (renormalized) vacuum energy problem is studied, and an additional constant pressure term, which induces a Chaplygin-like contribution to the dark energy sector, arises in the late-time dynamics. The correction to the late-time Hubble parameter is investigated by comparing theoretical predictions with the late Universe observational data. Our findings indicate that the current value of the stated vacuum energy is consistent with zero within 1 $$\sigma $$ . Implications of the modified $$\Lambda $$ CDM model with respect to the Hubble tension are also discussed.

Running Einstein constant and a possible vacuum state of the universe

A search for flavor-changing neutral current interactions of the top quark (<math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mrow><mi>t</mi></mrow></math>) and the Higgs boson (<math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mi>H</mi></math>) is presented. The search is based on proton-proton collision data collected in 2016–2018 at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV with the CMS detector at the LHC, and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mn>138</mn><mtext> </mtext><mtext> </mtext><msup><mi>fb</mi><mrow><mo>−</mo><mn>1</mn></mrow></msup></math>. Events containing a pair of leptons with the same-sign electric charge and at least one jet are considered. The results are used to constrain the branching fraction (<math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mi mathvariant="script">B</mi></math>) of the top quark decaying to a Higgs boson and an up (<math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mi>u</mi></math>) or charm (<math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mi>c</mi></math>) quark. No significant excess above the estimated background was found. The observed (expected) upper limits at a 95% confidence level are found to be 0.072% (0.059%) for <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mrow><mi mathvariant="script">B</mi><mo stretchy="false">(</mo><mi>t</mi><mo stretchy="false">→</mo><mi>H</mi><mi>u</mi><mo stretchy="false">)</mo></mrow></math> and 0.043% (0.062%) for <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mi mathvariant="script">B</mi><mo stretchy="false">(</mo><mi>t</mi><mo stretchy="false">→</mo><mi>H</mi><mi>c</mi><mo stretchy="false">)</mo></math>. These results are combined with two other searches performed by the CMS Collaboration for flavor-changing neutral current interactions of top quarks and Higgs bosons in final states where the Higgs boson decays to either a pair of photons or a pair of bottom quarks. The resulting observed (expected) upper limits at the 95% confidence level are 0.019% (0.027%) for <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mi mathvariant="script">B</mi><mo stretchy="false">(</mo><mi>t</mi><mo stretchy="false">→</mo><mi>H</mi><mi>u</mi><mo stretchy="false">)</mo></math> and 0.037% (0.035%) for <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mi mathvariant="script">B</mi><mo stretchy="false">(</mo><mi>t</mi><mo stretchy="false">→</mo><mi>H</mi><mi>c</mi><mo stretchy="false">)</mo></math>.
