A search for dark matter particles produced in association with a Higgs boson decaying to a bottom quark-antiquark pair in proton-proton collisions at <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mrow><msqrt><mrow><mi>s</mi></mrow></msqrt><mo>=</mo><mn>13</mn><mtext> </mtext><mtext> </mtext><mi>TeV</mi></mrow></math> is presented. The data, collected with the CMS detector at the LHC, correspond to an integrated luminosity of <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mrow><mn>101</mn><mtext> </mtext><mtext> </mtext><msup><mrow><mi>fb</mi></mrow><mrow><mo>−</mo><mn>1</mn></mrow></msup></mrow></math>. The analysis is performed in exclusive categories targeting both Lorentz-boosted (merged) and resolved <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mi>b</mi></math> jet pair topologies, covering a wide range of Higgs boson transverse momentum. A statistical combination is made with a previous search using data collected in 2016 and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mrow><mn>35.9</mn><mtext> </mtext><mtext> </mtext><msup><mrow><mi>fb</mi></mrow><mrow><mo>−</mo><mn>1</mn></mrow></msup></mrow></math>. The observed data agree with the standard model background predictions. Constraints are placed on models predicting new particles or interactions, such as those in the simplified frameworks of baryonic-<math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mrow><msup><mrow><mi>Z</mi></mrow><mrow><mo>′</mo></mrow></msup></mrow></math> and <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mrow><mn>2</mn><mi>HDM</mi><mo>+</mo><mi>a</mi></mrow></math>, where the latter is a type-II two-Higgs-doublet model featuring a heavy pseudoscalar with an additional light pseudoscalar. Upper limits at 95% confidence level are set on the production cross section for these models. For the baryonic-<math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mrow><msup><mrow><mi>Z</mi></mrow><mrow><mo>′</mo></mrow></msup></mrow></math> model, <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mrow><msup><mrow><mi>Z</mi></mrow><mrow><mo>′</mo></mrow></msup></mrow></math> boson masses below 2.25 TeV are excluded for a dark matter particle candidate mass of 1 GeV. In the <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mrow><mn>2</mn><mi>HDM</mi><mo>+</mo><mi>a</mi></mrow></math> model, heavy pseudoscalar masses between 850 and 1300 GeV are excluded for a light pseudoscalar mass of 350 GeV.

Search for dark matter produced in association with a Higgs boson decaying to bottom quarks in proton-proton collisions at <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><msqrt><mi>s</mi></msqrt><mo>=</mo><mn>13</mn><mtext> </mtext><mtext> </mtext><mi>TeV</mi></math>

Recent studies have shown that hadronic multiplicity in deep inelastic scattering can be associated with entanglement entropy. However, such definitions are intrinsically longitudinal and do not capture the full phase–space structure of the proton. In this work, we investigate the proton Wehrl entropy constructed from the gluon Husimi distribution, which provides a positive phase-space description within the present definitions and model calculations. Within this framework, we employ a gluon light-front spectator model based on soft-wall anti–de Sitter (AdS)/QCD-inspired wave functions, with free parameters constrained by global fits obtained by the NNPDF collaboration, allowing us to compute both parton distribution functions and Wigner distributions. The Husimi distribution is obtained via Gaussian smearing of the Wigner distribution with width given by the saturation scale in the Golec-Biernat-Wüsthoff model. We show that from a normalized Husimi distribution one can decompose the Wehrl entropy into an entanglement entropy term and a residual term associated with transverse degrees of freedom. Numerical results for the proton entanglement entropy are shown and compared with data obtained by the CMS collaboration, while the Wehrl entropy is presented for different values of the virtuality.

QCD Wehrl and entanglement entropies in a gluon spectator model at small <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mi>x</mi></math>

For the first time, we incorporate the cascade-type topology <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><msup><mi>D</mi><mn>0</mn></msup><mo stretchy="false">→</mo><msup><mi>π</mi><mo>−</mo></msup><msubsup><mi>a</mi><mn>1</mn><mo>+</mo></msubsup><mo stretchy="false">(</mo><mn>1260</mn><mo stretchy="false">)</mo><mo stretchy="false">(</mo><mo stretchy="false">→</mo><msup><mi>π</mi><mo>+</mo></msup><msup><mi>ρ</mi><mn>0</mn></msup><mo stretchy="false">(</mo><mo stretchy="false">→</mo><msup><mo>ℓ</mo><mo>+</mo></msup><msup><mo>ℓ</mo><mo>−</mo></msup><mo stretchy="false">)</mo><mo stretchy="false">)</mo></math> to describe the recently measured rare charm-meson decays. We find that it comprises one of the largest contributions to the decay rate and obtain an unprecedented agreement of the Standard Model prediction with the available LHCb data while also aptly describing four-body nonleptonic transitions. In the presence of this cascade component, we predict that some angular observables acquire nonzero values, further stressing its phenomenological relevance and its potential for constraining new physics.

The unsuppressed <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mi>C</mi><mi>P</mi></math> violation in QCD is a problem in the standard model. If we have some mechanism to guarantee real determinants of the quark mass matrices, the vanishing physical vacuum angle <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mover accent="true"><mi>θ</mi><mo stretchy="false">¯</mo></mover></math> indicates the <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mi>C</mi><mi>P</mi></math> invariance at the fundamental level. Thus, the small <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mover accent="true"><mi>θ</mi><mo stretchy="false">¯</mo></mover></math> is technically natural, since we have an enhanced <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mi>C</mi><mi>P</mi></math> symmetry in the limit of the vanishing <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mover accent="true"><mi>θ</mi><mo stretchy="false">¯</mo></mover><mo>=</mo><mn>0</mn></math>. In fact, it was proved that the vacuum angle is never renormalized up to the four-loop level once it is fixed at 0 value at some high energy scale. The purpose of this paper is to construct a model that guarantees the real determinants of the quark mass matrices assuming a noninvertible symmetry. In the present model, we have only one <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mi>C</mi><mi>P</mi></math> violating phase and hence all observable phases such as phases in the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix, in the neutrino oscillation and in the leptogenesis are related. It should be remarkable that the correct sign of the baryon-number asymmetry in the present Universe is obtained and a narrow region for the <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mi>C</mi><mi>P</mi></math> violating phase <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mrow><msub><mrow><mi>δ</mi></mrow><mrow><mi mathvariant="italic">CP</mi></mrow></msub><mo>≃</mo><mn>19</mn><mn>2</mn><mi>°</mi><mi>–</mi><mn>19</mn><mn>7</mn><mi>°</mi></mrow></math> is predicted.

GUT-motivated noninvertible symmetry as a solution to the strong <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mi>C</mi><mi>P</mi></math> problem and the neutrino <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mi>C</mi><mi>P</mi></math>-violating phase

We introduce a lattice QCD mixed action approach that employs Wilson-type quarks in the sea and valence sectors. The sea sector is based on gauge ensembles with $$N_\mathrm {\scriptstyle f}=2+1$$ flavours of non-perturbatively O($\textit{a}$)-improved Wilson fermions generated by the Coordinated Lattice Simulations (CLS) initiative. The parameter space of the considered ensembles encompasses five values of the lattice spacing, a range of pion masses extending down to the physical point, and large physical volumes. In the valence sector, we employ Wilson twisted-mass fermions at maximal twist, using the same massless Wilson-Dirac operator in both the sea and valence sectors. We describe the strategy applied for the required matching of the sea and valence quark masses along the target renormalised chiral trajectory. A precise universality test is then conducted by comparing the continuum-limit results of the mixed-action approach and of the unitary setup, in which the same Wilson fermion regularisation is employed in the sea and in the valence. As a key application, we conduct a scale setting procedure based on lattice determinations of the masses and decay constants of the pion and kaon, as well as the gradient flow scale $$t_0$$ . The scale setting can consequently be performed in three distinct ways, utilising the unitary setup, the mixed action approach, and their combination. We observe that the latter combination results in enhanced control of the systematic uncertainties, thereby yielding a precise determination of the physical value of $$t_0$$ .

Hadronic physics from a Wilson fermion mixed-action approach: setup and scale setting

We explore the signals of a scenario in which the composite states of a strongly coupled hidden sector couple to the Standard Model through the neutrino portal, giving rise to the neutrino masses. We consider a framework in which the hidden sector is conformal in the ultraviolet and the compositeness scale lies below the weak scale. If the lightest composite state in the hidden sector is a scalar, its decay rate back to the Standard Model is suppressed by angular momentum considerations and can naturally be small, giving rise to long-lived particle signals. We determine the current constraints on this class of models and explore the reach of future collider and beam dump searches. We find that FASER, SHiP, and Belle II can potentially probe a significant part of the unexplored parameter space.

Long-lived-particle signals of a composite hidden sector through the neutrino portal

The fuzzy onion model formed by connecting a set of concentric fuzzy spheres of increasing radius is motivated by studies of quantum space but can also be used to study standard physics. The main feature of the model is that functions in three-dimensional space—like scalar fields or wave functions—are expressed in terms of Hermitian matrices of a certain structure. Relevant equations are then matrix equations, and some problems, such as searching for the energy spectrum for fixed quantum numbers <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mo stretchy="false">(</mo><mi>l</mi><mo>,</mo><mi>m</mi><mo stretchy="false">)</mo></math>, can be expressed as an eigenvalue problem. We show how this simple approach can reproduce the results of other studies analyzing the hydrogen atom in a spherical cavity. We also test the effect of the short-distance quantum structure of the space on these solutions—not looking for the phenomenological consequences, as the scale of quantum space is many orders below the order of the Bohr radius, but to understand the effect of quantum space in general. We observe a set of solutions without a classical counterpart which have been suggested also in a former theoretical study.

Hydrogen atom in a fuzzy spherical cavity

We study the resurgent structure of the topological string dual to 2d U($\textit{N}$) Yang-Mills on torus. We find closed form formulas for instanton amplitudes up to arbitrarily high instanton orders, based on which we propose the non-perturbative partition function including contributions from all the real instantons, which is real for positive modulus and string coupling. We also explore complex instantons and find two infinite towers of them. We expect them to correspond to BPS states in type II string.

Resurgent structure of 2d Yang-Mills theory on a torus

We provide a holographic prescription to compute real-time thermal correlators with arbitrary operator ordering. In field theory, these correlation functions are captured by a multi-fold Schwinger-Keldysh time contour. We propose a holographic dual for these contours, which generalizes the gravitational Schwinger-Keldysh geometry previously advocated in the literature. Our geometry consists of multiple AdS-black holes glued together at the future and past horizons, with matching conditions determined by unitarity and the KMS condition. As a proof of concept, we solve for a probe scalar field in this geometry and compute bulk-bulk and bulk-boundary propagators, in terms of which we evaluate the 4-point functions at tree-level. We show that in perturbation theory, the lowest-order contributions that provide a genuine out-of-time order four-point function are exchange diagrams, which explore the full four-fold geometry. Furthermore, these diagrams reduce to a simple factorized expression. We propose a conjecture on the structure of higher order observables and provide a partial proof by studying a subset of the contributing diagrams.

A holographic prescription for generalized Schwinger-Keldysh contours

Doubly charged scalars frequently emerge in many well-motivated extensions of the Standard Model, particularly in frameworks that aim to explain the origin of neutrino masses. Their distinct electric charge and clean leptonic signatures make them especially compelling from the standpoint of experimental searches. In this work, we explore the sensitivity of the LHC full run II, including photon-photon fusion, and Future Circular Collider in its hadron-hadron configuration (FCC-hh) to such states, assuming they decay promptly and exclusively into charged leptons either conserving or violating lepton flavor. We find that the FCC-hh, operating at 100 TeV, is uniquely positioned to probe doubly charged scalars with masses up to 7 TeV and possibly establish the mechanism behind neutrino masses.
