A signal consistent with the <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mi mathvariant="normal">Ω</mi><mo stretchy="false">(</mo><mn>2012</mn><mo stretchy="false">)</mo></math> baryon has been observed with a significance of <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mn>15</mn><mi>σ</mi></math> in pp collisions at <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mrow><msqrt><mrow><mi>s</mi></mrow></msqrt><mo>=</mo><mn>13</mn><mtext> </mtext><mtext> </mtext><mi>TeV</mi></mrow></math> at the LHC. In this paper, the analysis technique is described and measurements of the mass and width of the <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mi mathvariant="normal">Ω</mi><mo stretchy="false">(</mo><mn>2012</mn><mo stretchy="false">)</mo></math> are reported, along with the first measurement of its transverse-momentum spectrum and yield. This paper corroborates the observation by the Belle Collaboration of this excited <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mi mathvariant="normal">Ω</mi></math> state and the observation that the <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mi mathvariant="normal">Ω</mi><mo stretchy="false">(</mo><mn>2012</mn><mo stretchy="false">)</mo></math> has a rather narrow width for a strongly decaying resonance. The yield measurement is combined with a statistical thermal model calculation of strange baryon yield ratios to obtain estimates of the <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mrow><mi mathvariant="normal">Ω</mi><mo stretchy="false">(</mo><mn>2012</mn><msup><mo stretchy="false">)</mo><mo>−</mo></msup></mrow><mo stretchy="false">→</mo><mi mathvariant="normal">Ξ</mi><mover accent="true"><mi mathvariant="normal">K</mi><mo stretchy="false">¯</mo></mover></math> branching ratios. These results will improve our understanding of the internal structure and mass spectrum of excited baryon states and serve as a baseline for searches regarding modifications of these properties in high-temperature media.

Observation of the <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mrow><mi mathvariant="normal">Ω</mi><mo stretchy="false">(</mo><mn>2012</mn><mo stretchy="false">)</mo></mrow></math> baryon at the LHC

The distribution of angular correlations between prompt charm hadrons and primary charged particles in pp collisions is sensitive to the charm-quark hadronisation process. In this letter, charm-baryon correlations are measured for the first time by studying the azimuthal-angle difference between charged particles and prompt <math altimg='si1.svg'><msubsup><mrow><mi mathvariant='normal'>&#923;</mi></mrow><mrow><mtext>c</mtext></mrow><mrow><mo linebreak='badbreak' linebreakstyle='after'>+</mo></mrow></msubsup></math> baryons produced in pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of <math altimg='si2.svg'><msqrt><mrow><mi>s</mi></mrow></msqrt><mo linebreak='goodbreak' linebreakstyle='after'>=</mo><mn>13</mn></math> TeV, with the ALICE detector. <math altimg='si1.svg'><msubsup><mrow><mi mathvariant='normal'>&#923;</mi></mrow><mrow><mtext>c</mtext></mrow><mrow><mo linebreak='badbreak' linebreakstyle='after'>+</mo></mrow></msubsup></math> baryons are reconstructed at midrapidity ( <math altimg='si5.svg'><mo stretchy='false'>|</mo><mi>y</mi><mo stretchy='false'>|</mo><mo linebreak='goodbreak' linebreakstyle='after'>&lt;</mo><mn>0.5</mn></math>) in the transverse-momentum interval <math altimg='si6.svg'><mn>3</mn><mo linebreak='goodbreak' linebreakstyle='after'>&lt;</mo><msub><mrow><mi>p</mi></mrow><mrow><mtext>T</mtext></mrow></msub><mo linebreak='goodbreak' linebreakstyle='after'>&lt;</mo><mn>16</mn></math> GeV/ <italic>c</italic>, and correlated with charged particles with <math altimg='si7.svg'><msub><mrow><mi>p</mi></mrow><mrow><mtext>T</mtext></mrow></msub><mo linebreak='goodbreak' linebreakstyle='after'>&gt;</mo><mn>0.3</mn></math> GeV/ <italic>c</italic> and pseudorapidity <math altimg='si8.svg'><mo stretchy='false'>|</mo><mi>&#951;</mi><mo stretchy='false'>|</mo><mo linebreak='goodbreak' linebreakstyle='after'>&lt;</mo><mn>0.8</mn></math>. For <math altimg='si9.svg'><mn>3</mn><mo linebreak='goodbreak' linebreakstyle='after'>&lt;</mo><msubsup><mrow><mi>p</mi></mrow><mrow><mtext>T</mtext></mrow><mrow><msubsup><mrow><mi mathvariant='normal'>&#923;</mi></mrow><mrow><mtext>c</mtext></mrow><mrow><mo linebreak='badbreak' linebreakstyle='after'>+</mo></mrow></msubsup><mo>,</mo><mtext>D</mtext></mrow></msubsup><mo linebreak='goodbreak' linebreakstyle='after'>&lt;</mo><mn>5</mn></math> GeV/ <italic>c</italic>, the comparison with published measurements of D-meson and charged-particle correlations in the same collision system hints at a larger number of low-momentum particles associated with <math altimg='si1.svg'><msubsup><mrow><mi mathvariant='normal'>&#923;</mi></mrow><mrow><mtext>c</mtext></mrow><mrow><mo linebreak='badbreak' linebreakstyle='after'>+</mo></mrow></msubsup></math>-baryon triggers than with D-meson triggers, both in the collinear and opposite directions with respect to the trigger particle. These differences can be quantified by the comparison of the properties of the near- and away-side correlation peaks, and are not reproduced by predictions of various Monte Carlo event generators, generally underpredicting the associated particle yields at <math altimg='si10.svg'><msubsup><mrow><mi>p</mi></mrow><mrow><mtext>T</mtext></mrow><mrow><mtext>assoc</mtext></mrow></msubsup><mo linebreak='goodbreak' linebreakstyle='after'>&lt;</mo><mn>1</mn></math> GeV/ <italic>c</italic>. This tension between <math altimg='si1.svg'><msubsup><mrow><mi mathvariant='normal'>&#923;</mi></mrow><mrow><mtext>c</mtext></mrow><mrow><mo linebreak='badbreak' linebreakstyle='after'>+</mo></mrow></msubsup></math>-baryon and D-meson associated peak yields could suggest a modified fragmentation of the charm quark, or a different hadronisation process, when a charm baryon is produced in the final state.

Their production yields relative to the <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><msubsup><mi mathvariant="normal">D</mi><mi mathvariant="normal">s</mi><mo>+</mo></msubsup></math> ground-state yield were found to be compatible between minimum-bias and high-multiplicity collisions, as well as with previous measurements in <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><msup><mi mathvariant="normal">e</mi><mo>±</mo></msup><mi mathvariant="normal">p</mi></math> and <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><msup><mi mathvariant="normal">e</mi><mo>+</mo></msup><msup><mi mathvariant="normal">e</mi><mo>−</mo></msup></math> collisions. The measured <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><msubsup><mi mathvariant="normal">D</mi><mrow><mi mathvariant="normal">s</mi><mn>1</mn></mrow><mo>+</mo></msubsup><mo>/</mo><msubsup><mi mathvariant="normal">D</mi><mi mathvariant="normal">s</mi><mo>+</mo></msubsup></math> and <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><msubsup><mi mathvariant="normal">D</mi><mrow><mi mathvariant="normal">s</mi><mn>2</mn></mrow><mrow><mo>*</mo><mo>+</mo></mrow></msubsup><mo>/</mo><msubsup><mi mathvariant="normal">D</mi><mi mathvariant="normal">s</mi><mo>+</mo></msubsup></math> yield ratios are described by statistical hadronization models and can be used to tune the parameters governing the production of excited charm-strange hadrons in Monte Carlo generators, such as pythia 8.

In this letter, we present the first measurement of direct photons at the transverse momentum of <math altimg='si2.svg'><mn>1</mn><mo linebreak='goodbreak' linebreakstyle='after'>&lt;</mo><msub><mrow><mi>p</mi></mrow><mrow><mi mathvariant='normal'>T</mi></mrow></msub><mo linebreak='goodbreak' linebreakstyle='after'>&lt;</mo><mn>6</mn></math> GeV/ <italic>c</italic> at midrapidity <math altimg='si3.svg'><mo stretchy='false'>|</mo><mi>&#951;</mi><mo stretchy='false'>|</mo><mo linebreak='goodbreak' linebreakstyle='after'>&lt;</mo><mn>0.8</mn></math> in inelastic and high-multiplicity proton&#8211;proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of <math altimg='si1.svg'><msqrt><mrow><mi>s</mi></mrow></msqrt><mo linebreak='goodbreak' linebreakstyle='after'>=</mo></math> 13 TeV. The fraction of virtual direct photons in the inclusive virtual photon spectrum is obtained from a fit to the dielectron invariant mass spectrum. In the limit of zero invariant mass, this fraction is equal to the relative contribution of real direct photons in the inclusive real photon spectrum. Contributions from decays of light-flavour neutral mesons are estimated using independent measurements in proton&#8211;proton collisions at the same energy and the same event class. For the first time at the LHC energies, a direct-photon signal is observed at low <math altimg='si4.svg'><msub><mrow><mi>p</mi></mrow><mrow><mi mathvariant='normal'>T</mi></mrow></msub></math> in both inelastic and high-multiplicity event classes, with a significance of 3.2 <italic>&#963;</italic> and 1.9 <italic>&#963;</italic> in terms of standard deviations, correspondingly. The yield of direct photons in inelastic pp collisions is compared to perturbative QCD calculations. The integrated photon yield is studied as a function of charged-particle multiplicity and is compared to the results from other experiments and theoretical calculations. The results show a significant increase of direct-photon yield with charged-particle multiplicity.

Direct-photon production in inelastic and high-multiplicity proton–proton collisions at <math altimg='si1.svg'><msqrt><mrow><mi>s</mi></mrow></msqrt><mo linebreak='goodbreak' linebreakstyle='after'>=</mo></math> 13 TeV

This study presents the first measurement of the f <inf>1</inf>(1285) resonance using the ALICE detector in inelastic proton&#8211;proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The resonance is reconstructed at midrapidity ( <math altimg='si2.svg'><mo stretchy='false'>|</mo><mi>y</mi><mo stretchy='false'>|</mo><mo linebreak='goodbreak' linebreakstyle='after'>&lt;</mo></math> 0.5) through the hadronic decay channel f <math altimg='si3.svg'><msub><mrow /><mrow><mn>1</mn></mrow></msub><mo stretchy='false'>(</mo><mn>1285</mn><mo stretchy='false'>)</mo><mo stretchy='false'>&#8594;</mo><mrow><msubsup><mrow><mi mathvariant='normal'>K</mi></mrow><mrow><mi mathvariant='normal'>S</mi></mrow><mrow><mn mathvariant='normal'>0</mn></mrow></msubsup><msup><mrow><mi mathvariant='normal'>K</mi></mrow><mrow><mo>&#177;</mo></mrow></msup><msup><mrow><mi mathvariant='italic'>&#960;</mi></mrow><mrow><mo>&#8723;</mo></mrow></msup></mrow></math>. Key measurements include the determination of its mass, transverse-momentum integrated yield, and average transverse momentum. Additionally, the ratio of the transverse-momentum integrated yield of f <inf>1</inf>(1285) to pion is compared with calculations from the canonical statistical hadronization model. The model calculation, assuming a zero total strangeness content for f <inf>1</inf>(1285), reproduces the data within 1 <italic>&#963;</italic> deviation, shedding light on the quark composition of f <inf>1</inf>(1285).

The first measurement of the polarisation of coherently photoproduced <math altimg='si2.svg'><mi mathvariant='normal'>J</mi><mo stretchy='false'>/</mo><mi>&#968;</mi></math> mesons in ultra-peripheral Pb&#8211;Pb collisions, using data at <math altimg='si3.svg'><msqrt><mrow><msub><mrow><mi>s</mi></mrow><mrow><mi mathvariant='normal'>NN</mi></mrow></msub></mrow></msqrt><mspace width='0.25em' /><mo linebreak='goodbreak' linebreakstyle='after'>=</mo><mspace width='0.25em' /><mn>5.02</mn></math> TeV, is presented. The <math altimg='si2.svg'><mi mathvariant='normal'>J</mi><mo stretchy='false'>/</mo><mi>&#968;</mi></math> meson is measured via its dimuon decay channel in the forward rapidity interval <math altimg='si4.svg'><mo linebreak='badbreak' linebreakstyle='after'>&#8722;</mo><mn>4.0</mn><mo linebreak='goodbreak' linebreakstyle='after'>&lt;</mo><mi>y</mi><mo linebreak='goodbreak' linebreakstyle='after'>&lt;</mo><mo linebreak='badbreak' linebreakstyle='after'>&#8722;</mo><mn>2.5</mn></math> using the ALICE detector at the CERN LHC. An event sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 750 <math altimg='si5.svg'><mi>&#956;</mi><msup><mrow><mtext>b</mtext></mrow><mrow><mo linebreak='badbreak' linebreakstyle='after'>&#8722;</mo><mn>1</mn></mrow></msup></math> &#177; 5% (syst) is analysed. Hadronic activity is highly suppressed since the interaction is mediated by a photon. The polar and azimuthal angle distributions of the decay muons are measured, and the polarisation parameters <math altimg='si6.svg'><msub><mrow><mi>&#955;</mi></mrow><mrow><mi>&#952;</mi></mrow></msub></math>, <math altimg='si63.svg'><msub><mrow><mi>&#955;</mi></mrow><mrow><mi>&#966;</mi></mrow></msub></math>, <math altimg='si68.svg'><msub><mrow><mi>&#955;</mi></mrow><mrow><mi>&#952;</mi><mi>&#966;</mi></mrow></msub></math> are extracted. The analysis is carried out in the helicity frame. The results are found to be consistent with a transversely polarised <math altimg='si2.svg'><mi mathvariant='normal'>J</mi><mo stretchy='false'>/</mo><mi>&#968;</mi></math>. These values are compared with previous measurements by the H1 and ZEUS experiments. The polarisation parameters of coherent <math altimg='si2.svg'><mi mathvariant='normal'>J</mi><mo stretchy='false'>/</mo><mi>&#968;</mi></math> photoproduction in Pb&#8211;Pb collisions are found to be consistent with the <italic>s</italic>-channel helicity conservation hypothesis.

The ALICE Collaboration presents a new suite of jet substructure measurements in Pb–Pb and pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair <math altimg='si1.svg'><msqrt><mrow><msub><mrow><mi>s</mi></mrow><mrow><mi mathvariant='normal'>NN</mi></mrow></msub></mrow></msqrt><mo linebreak='goodbreak' linebreakstyle='after'>=</mo><mn>5.02</mn></math> <inline-figure xmlns:ns0='http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink'><link locator='fx001' ns0:type='simple' ns0:href='pii:S0370269325001698/fx001' ns0:role='http://data.elsevier.com/vocabulary/ElsevierContentTypes/23.4' id='ln0110' /><alt-text role='short' id='at0110'>Image 1</alt-text></inline-figure>. These measurements provide access to the internal structure of jets via the momentum and angle of their constituents, probing how the quark&#8211;gluon plasma modifies jets, an effect known as jet quenching. Jet grooming additionally removes soft wide-angle radiation to enhance perturbative accuracy and reduce experimental uncertainties. We report the groomed and ungroomed jet mass <math altimg='si2.svg'><msub><mrow><mi>m</mi></mrow><mrow><mi mathvariant='normal'>jet</mi></mrow></msub></math> and jet angularities <math altimg='si3.svg'><msubsup><mrow><mi>&#955;</mi></mrow><mrow><mi>&#945;</mi></mrow><mrow><mi>&#954;</mi></mrow></msubsup></math> using <math altimg='si4.svg'><mi>&#954;</mi><mo linebreak='goodbreak' linebreakstyle='after'>=</mo><mn>1</mn></math> and <math altimg='si5.svg'><mi>&#945;</mi><mo linebreak='goodbreak' linebreakstyle='after'>&gt;</mo><mn>0</mn></math>. Charged-particle jets are reconstructed at midrapidity using the anti- <math altimg='si6.svg'><msub><mrow><mi>k</mi></mrow><mrow><mi mathvariant='normal'>T</mi></mrow></msub></math> algorithm with resolution parameter <math altimg='si7.svg'><mi>R</mi><mo linebreak='goodbreak' linebreakstyle='after'>=</mo><mn>0.2</mn></math>. A narrowing of the jet mass and angularity distributions in Pb&#8211;Pb collisions with respect to pp is observed and is enhanced for groomed results, confirming modification of the jet core. By using consistent jet definitions and kinematic cuts between the mass and angularities for the first time, previous inconsistencies in the interpretation of quenching measurements are resolved, rectifying a hurdle for understanding how jet quenching arises from first principles and highlighting the importance of a well-controlled baseline. These results are compared with a variety of theoretical models of jet quenching, providing constraints on jet energy-loss mechanisms in the quark&#8211;gluon plasma.

This paper reports the first measurement of the transverse momentum (<math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><msub><mi>p</mi><mi mathvariant="normal">T</mi></msub></math>) spectra of primary charged pions, kaons, (anti)protons, and unidentified particles as a function of the charged-particle flattenicity in pp collisions at <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><msqrt><mi>s</mi></msqrt><mo>=</mo><mn>13</mn><mtext> </mtext><mtext> </mtext><mi>TeV</mi></math>. Flattenicity is a novel event shape observable that is measured in the pseudorapidity intervals covered by the V0 detector, <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mn>2.8</mn><mo>&lt;</mo><mi>η</mi><mo>&lt;</mo><mn>5.1</mn></math> and <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mo>−</mo><mn>3.7</mn><mo>&lt;</mo><mi>η</mi><mo>&lt;</mo><mo>−</mo><mn>1.7</mn></math>. According to QCD-inspired phenomenological models, it shows sensitivity to multiparton interactions and is less affected by biases toward larger <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><msub><mi>p</mi><mi mathvariant="normal">T</mi></msub></math> due to local multiplicity fluctuations in the V0 acceptance than multiplicity. The analysis is performed in minimum-bias (MB) as well as in high-multiplicity events up to <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mrow><msub><mrow><mi>p</mi></mrow><mrow><mi mathvariant="normal">T</mi></mrow></msub><mo>=</mo><mrow><mn>20</mn><mtext> </mtext><mtext> </mtext><mrow><mi>GeV</mi><mo>/</mo></mrow><mi>c</mi></mrow></mrow></math>. The event selection requires at least one charged particle produced in the pseudorapidity interval <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mo stretchy="false">|</mo><mi>η</mi><mo stretchy="false">|</mo><mo>&lt;</mo><mn>1</mn></math>. The measured <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><msub><mi>p</mi><mi mathvariant="normal">T</mi></msub></math> distributions, average <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><msub><mi>p</mi><mi mathvariant="normal">T</mi></msub></math>, kaon-to-pion and proton-to-pion particle ratios, presented in this paper, are compared to model calculations using pythia 8 based on color strings and EPOS LHC. The modification of the <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><msub><mi>p</mi><mi mathvariant="normal">T</mi></msub></math>-spectral shapes in low-flattenicity events that have large event activity with respect to those measured in MB events develops a pronounced peak at intermediate <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><msub><mi>p</mi><mi mathvariant="normal">T</mi></msub></math> (<math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mn>2</mn><mo>&lt;</mo><msub><mi>p</mi><mi mathvariant="normal">T</mi></msub><mo>&lt;</mo><mn>8</mn><mtext> </mtext><mtext> </mtext><mi>GeV</mi><mo>/</mo><mi>c</mi></math>), and approaches the vicinity of unity at higher <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><msub><mi>p</mi><mi mathvariant="normal">T</mi></msub></math>. The results are qualitatively described by pythia, and they show different behavior than those measured as a function of charged-particle multiplicity based on the V0M estimator.

Corrigendum to “Search for a common baryon source in high-multiplicity pp collisions at the LHC” [Phys. Lett. B 811 (2020) 135849]

The measurement of ϒ(1S), ϒ(2S), and ϒ(3S) yields as a function of the charged-particle multiplicity density, <math altimg='si2.svg'><mtext mathvariant='normal'>d</mtext><msub><mrow><mi>N</mi></mrow><mrow><mtext mathvariant='normal'>ch</mtext></mrow></msub><mo stretchy='false'>/</mo><mtext mathvariant='normal'>d</mtext><mi>&#951;</mi></math>, using the ALICE experiment at the LHC, is reported in pp collisions at <math altimg='si3.svg'><msqrt><mrow><mi>s</mi></mrow></msqrt><mo linebreak='goodbreak' linebreakstyle='after'>=</mo></math> 13 TeV. The &#978; meson yields are measured at forward rapidity ( <math altimg='si4.svg'><mn>2.5</mn><mo linebreak='goodbreak' linebreakstyle='after'>&lt;</mo><mi>y</mi><mo linebreak='goodbreak' linebreakstyle='after'>&lt;</mo><mn>4</mn></math>) in the dimuon decay channel, whereas the charged-particle multiplicity is defined at central rapidity ( <math altimg='si5.svg'><mo stretchy='false'>|</mo><mi>&#951;</mi><mo stretchy='false'>|</mo><mo linebreak='goodbreak' linebreakstyle='after'>&lt;</mo><mn>1</mn></math>). Both quantities are divided by their average value in minimum bias events to compute the self-normalized quantities. The increase of the self-normalized &#978;(1S), &#978;(2S), and &#978;(3S) yields is found to be compatible with a linear scaling with the self-normalized <math altimg='si2.svg'><mtext mathvariant='normal'>d</mtext><msub><mrow><mi>N</mi></mrow><mrow><mtext mathvariant='normal'>ch</mtext></mrow></msub><mo stretchy='false'>/</mo><mtext mathvariant='normal'>d</mtext><mi>&#951;</mi></math>, within the uncertainties. The self-normalized yield ratios of excited-to-ground &#978; states are compatible with unity within uncertainties. Similarly, the measured double ratio of the self-normalized &#978;(1S) to the self-normalized J/ <italic>&#968;</italic> yields, both measured at forward rapidity, is compatible with unity for self-normalized charged-particle multiplicities beyond one. The measurements are compared with theoretical predictions incorporating initial or final state effects.
