QCD corrections to fermionic Minimal Dark Matter annihilations increase its annihilation cross section (by 2% for a weak doublet, 1.3% for a triplet, 0.5% for a quintuplet) and thereby the Dark Matter mass required to achieve the observed cosmological relic abundance via thermal freeze-out.

QCD corrections to Minimal Dark Matter annihilations

We show that baryogenesis can arise from the cosmological evolution of a scalar field that governs CP-violating parameters, such as the Yukawa couplings and the theta terms of the Standard Model. During the big bang, this scalar may reach a CP-violating minimum, where its mass can be comparable to the inflationary Hubble scale. Such dynamics can emerge in theories featuring either a spontaneously broken local U(1) symmetry or modular invariance. The latter arises naturally as the effective field theory capturing the geometric origin of CP violation in toroidal string compactifications. Modular baryogenesis is compatible with the modular approach to resolving the strong CP problem.

Baryogenesis from cosmological CP breaking

Observations of $\textit{γ}$-ray from blazars suggest the presence of magnetic fields in the intergalactic medium, which may require a primordial origin. Intense enough primordial magnetic fields can arise from theories of dynamical electroweak symmetry breaking during the big bang, where supercooling is ended by a strongly first order phase transition. We consider theories involving new scalars and possibly vectors, including thermal particle dark matter candidates. Intense enough magnetic fields can arise if the reheating temperature after the phase transition is below a few TeV. The same dynamics also leaves testable primordial gravitational waves and possibly primordial black holes.

Primordial magnetogenesis from a supercooled dynamical electroweak phase transition

We show that solutions to the strong CP problem based on modular invariance can be extended to incorporate features that appear in string compactifications: quarks with mostly positive modular weights and non-trivial gauge kinetic functions. This requires assuming that singularities and zeroes only appear at special points, such as decompactification limits. We discuss the impact of these assumptions on string gauge unification.

Solving the strong CP problem in string-inspired theories with modular invariance

Long-lived heavy particles present during the big bang could have a decay channel opened by gravitons. Such decays can produce gravitational waves with large enough abundance to be detectable, and a peculiar narrow spectrum peaked today around optical frequencies. We identify which particles can decay in one or two gravitons. The maximal gravitational wave abundance arises from theories with extra hidden strong gauge dynamics, such as a confining pure-glue group. An interesting abundance also arises in theories with perturbative couplings. Future observation might shed light on early cosmology and allow some spectroscopy of sub-Planckian gravitationally-decaying particles, plausibly present in a variety of theories such as gauge unification, supersymmetry, extra dimensions, strings.

Optical gravitational waves as signals of gravitationally-decaying particles

We propose a theory that preserves spin-summed scattering and decay rates at tree level while affecting particle spins. This is achieved by breaking the Lorentz group in a non-local way that tries avoiding stringent constraints, for example leaving unbroken the maximal sub-group SIM(2). As a phenomenological application, this new physics can alter the spins of top-antitop pairs (and consequently their entanglement) produced in collisions without impacting their rates. Some observables affected by loops involving top quarks with modified entanglement receive corrections.

Cosmological collider signals of primordial non-Gaussianity arise at tree level when an extra scalar has Hubble mass during inflation. We critically review the formalism finding that a large class of inflationary theories, based on Planck-scale physics, predict a scalar bi-spectrum around the gravitational floor level. This mild signal arises for example in $\textit{R}$ gravity, in the regime where its gravitational scalar has Hubble-scale mass. Signals much above the gravitational floor arise in theories where scalars undergo multiple turns during inflation, thanks to sub-Planckian physics.

Cosmological collider non-Gaussianity from multiple scalars and $\textit{R}$

I summarize the apparent relevance of anthropic selection in understanding unnatural features of the Standard Model, and the consequent implications for theory. This topic, pioneered by Weinberg, could make him the last giant of physics.

Is nature natural?

We formulate general conditions under which the strong CP problem is solved by spontaneous CP violation. Quark-mass matrix elements are polynomials in the CP-breaking order parameters, engineered such that their determinant is a real constant. This scheme permits only a limited number of textures. These conditions can be realized in supersymmetric theories with CP as an anomaly-free local flavor symmetry, suggesting a unified solution to the strong CP problem and the flavor puzzle. Our solution can be implemented using either modular invariance or a local U(1) symmetry. We present modular-invariant realizations where matter fields are assigned small modular weights ±2 (±1), utilising higher levels N = 2 (N = 3). Heavy quarks are in general not required, but their presence allows for models where colored particles fill non-singlet representations of the flavor group.

Solving the strong CP problem without axions

A muon collider could produce the heavier Standard Model particles with a boost, for example in resonant processes such as μ  −  μ + → h or μ  −  μ → Z. We propose machine configurations that produce the boost (asymmetric beam energies, tilted beams) and estimate how much the luminosity is reduced or perhaps enhanced. The feasibility of the proposed configurations, as well as an estimation of the beam-induced backgrounds and beam energy spread, needs to be evaluated in order to derive more solid conclusions on the physics potential of such boosted collider configurations. If achievable, the boost can provide new interesting observational opportunities. For example it can significantly enhance the sensitivity to long-lived new particles decaying in a far-away detector, such as dark higgses or sterile neutrinos produced in h or Z decays.
