A line of first-order phase transitions is conjectured in the phase diagram of Quantum Chromodynamics at non-zero baryon density. If this is the case, numerical simulations of neutron star mergers suggest that various regions of the stars may cross this line multiple times. This results in the nucleation of bubbles of the preferred phase, which subsequently expand and collide. The resulting gravitational wave spectrum is highly sensitive to the velocity of the bubble walls. We use holography to perform the first microscopic simulation of bubble dynamics in a theory that qualitatively mirrors the expected phase diagram of Quantum Chromodynamics. We determine the wall velocity in the metastable regions and we compare it to theoretical estimates. We discuss implications for gravitational wave production.

Bubble dynamics in a QCD-like phase diagram

<p>Analytic continuations of holographic entanglement entropy in which the boundary subregion extends along a timelike direction have brought a promise of a novel, time-centric probe of the emergence of spacetime. We propose that the bulk carriers of this holographic timelike entanglement entropy are boundary-anchored extremal surfaces probing analytic continuation of holographic spacetimes into complex coordinates. This proposal not only provides a geometric interpretation of all the known cases obtained by direct analytic continuation of closed-form expressions of holographic entanglement entropy of a strip subregion but crucially also opens a window to study holographic timelike entanglement entropy in full generality. We initialize the investigation of complex extremal surfaces anchored on a timelike strip at the boundary of anti-de Sitter black branes. We find multiple complex extremal surfaces and discuss possible principles singling out the physical contribution.</p>

Geometric Interpretation of Timelike Entanglement Entropy

<p>We investigate the nonlinear stability of global anti–de Sitter space in the presence of multitrace deformations utilizing an Einstein-Klein-Gordon system with a top-down scalar potential. Our numerical simulations show that marginal and irrelevant deformations retain the nonlinear instability originally found by Bizoń and Rostworowski, while relevant deformations disrupt it. We show that the nonlinear impact of multitrace deformations is in one-to-one correspondence with how they affect the resonant character of the global anti–de Sitter normal mode eigenfrequency spectrum.</p>

Multitrace deformations and the nonlinear stability of anti–de Sitter space

We use causality to derive a number of simple and universal constraints on dispersion relations, which describe the location of singularities of retarded two-point functions in relativistic quantum field theories. We prove that all causal dissipative dispersion relations have a finite radius of convergence in cases where stochastic fluctuations are negligible. We then give two-sided bounds on all transport coefficients in units of this radius, including an upper bound on diffusivity.

Rigorous Bounds on Transport from Causality

The gradient expansion is the fundamental organizing principle underlying relativistic hydrodynamics, yet understanding its convergence properties for general nonlinear flows has posed a major challenge. We introduce a simple method to address this question in a class of fluids modeled by Israel-Stewart–type relaxation equations. We apply it to (<math><mrow><mn>1</mn><mo>+</mo><mn>1</mn></mrow></math>)-dimensional flows and provide numerical evidence for factorially divergent gradient expansions. This generalizes results previously only obtained for (<math><mn>0</mn><mo>+</mo><mn>1</mn></math>)-dimensional comoving flows, notably Bjorken flow. We also demonstrate that the only known nontrivial case of a convergent hydrodynamic gradient expansion at the nonlinear level relies on Bjorken flow symmetries and becomes factorially divergent as soon as these are relaxed. Finally, we show that factorial divergence can be removed using a momentum space cutoff, which generalizes a result obtained earlier in the context of linear response.

Hydrodynamic Gradient Expansion Diverges beyond Bjorken Flow

A foundational question in relativistic fluid mechanics concerns the properties of the hydrodynamic gradient expansion at large orders. We establish the precise conditions under which this gradient expansion diverges for a broad class of microscopic theories admitting a relativistic hydrodynamic limit, in the linear regime. Our result does not rely on highly symmetric fluid flows utilized by previous studies of heavy-ion collisions and cosmology. The hydrodynamic gradient expansion diverges whenever energy density or velocity fields have support in momentum space exceeding a critical momentum and converges otherwise. This critical momentum is an intrinsic property of the microscopic theory and is set by branch point singularities of hydrodynamic dispersion relations.

Hydrodynamic gradient expansion in linear response theory

The large proper-time behaviour of expanding boost-invariant fluids has provided many crucial insights into quark-gluon plasma dynamics. Here we formulate and explore the late-time behaviour of nonequilibrium dynamics at the level of linearized perturbations of equilibrium, but without any special symmetry assumptions. We introduce a useful quantitative approximation scheme in which hydrodynamic modes appear as perturbative contributions while transients are nonperturbative. In this way, solutions are naturally organized into transseries as they are in the case of boost-invariant flows. We focus our attention on the ubiquitous telegrapher’s equation, the simplest example of a causal theory with a hydrodynamic sector. In position space we uncover novel transient contributions as well as Stokes phenomena which change the structure of the transseries based on the spacetime region or the choice of initial data.

Transseries for causal diffusive systems

This work addresses the response of a holographic conformal field theory to a homogeneous gravitational periodic driving. The dual geometry is the AdS-soliton, which models a strongly coupled quantum system in a gapped phase, on a compact domain. The response is a time-periodic geometry up to a driving amplitude threshold which decreases with the driving frequency. Beyond that, collapse to a black hole occurs, signaling decoherence and thermalization in the dual theory. At some frequencies, we also find a resonant coupling to the gravitational normal modes of the AdS-soliton, yielding a nonlinearly bound state. We also speculate on the possible uses of quantum strongly coupled systems to build resonant gravitational wave detectors.

Gravitational wave driving of a gapped holographic system

We study periodically driven scalar fields and the resulting geometries with global AdS asymptotics. These solutions describe the strongly coupled dynamics of dual finite-size quantum systems under a periodic driving which we interpret as Floquet condensates. They span a continuous two-parameter space that extends the linearized solutions on AdS. We map the regions of stability in the solution space. In a significant portion of the unstable subspace, two very different endpoints are reached depending upon the sign of the perturbation. Collapse into a black hole occurs for one sign. For the opposite sign instead one attains a regular solution with periodic modulation. We also construct quenches where the driving frequency and amplitude are continuously varied. Quasistatic quenches can interpolate between pure AdS and sourced solutions with time periodic vev. By suitably choosing the quasistatic path one can obtain boson stars dual to Floquet condensates at zero driving field. We characterize the adiabaticity of the quenching processes. Besides, we speculate on the possible connections of this framework with time crystals.

Floquet scalar dynamics in global AdS

We construct a family of very simple stationary solutions to gravity coupled to a massless scalar field in global AdS. They involve a constantly rising source for the scalar field at the boundary and thereby we name them pumping solutions. We construct them numerically in D = 4. They are regular and, generically, have negative mass. We perform a study of linear and nonlinear stability and find both stable and unstable branches. In the latter case, solutions belonging to different sub-branches can either decay to black holes or to limiting cycles. This observation motivates the search for non-stationary exactly timeperiodic solutions which we actually construct. We clarify the role of pumping solutions in the context of quasistatic adiabatic quenches. In D = 3 the pumping solutions can be related to other previously known solutions, like magnetic or translationally-breaking backgrounds. From this we derive an analytic expression.
