With the discovery of a Higgs boson with a mass of 125 gigaelectronvolts (GeV) at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN in 2012, the Standard Model (SM) is complete, and despite intensive searches, no new fundamental particle has been observed since then. In fact, a discovery can be challenging without a predictive new physics model because different channels and observables cannot be combined directly and unambiguously. Furthermore, without supporting indirect hints, the signal space to be searched is huge, resulting in diluted significances owing to the look-elsewhere effect. Several LHC processes with multiple leptons in the final state point towards the existence of a new Higgs boson with a mass between 140 GeV to 160 GeV decaying mostly to $\textit{W}$ bosons. While the former strongly reduces the look-elsewhere effect, the latter indicates that it could be a Higgs triplet with zero hypercharge. Within this simple and predictive extension of the SM, we simulate and combine different channels of di-photon production in association with leptons, missing energy, jets, $\textit{etc}$... Using the full run-2 results by ATLAS, including those presented recently at the Moriond conference, an increased significance of 4 standard deviations is obtained for a $\approx$ 152 GeV Higgs. Due to the previously predicted mass range, the look-elsewhere effect is negligible, and this constitutes the highest statistical evidence for a new narrow resonance obtained at the LHC. Furthermore, the model predicts a heavier-than-expected $\textit{W}$ boson, as indicated by the global electroweak fit. If further substantiated, the discovery of a new Higgs would overthrow the SM, provide a compelling case for the construction of future particle colliders, and pave the way to a novel understanding of the known shortcomings of the SM. In particular, the triplet Higgs field can lead to a strong first-order phase transition and could thus be related to the matter anti-matter asymmetry in our Universe.

We propose an extension of the color-kinematics duality for nonlinear sigma models with nonymmetric cosets. The role of color is replaced with curvatures in field space. The duality between curvature and kinematics allows for a new double copy: the double copy of the nonlinear sigma model for nonsymmetric cosets is the general Galileon theory. We provide evidence for this new double copy of geometry.

Color-kinematics duality for nonlinear sigma models with nonsymmetric cosets

We derive a soft theorem for a massless scalar in an effective field theory with generic field content using the geometry of field space. This result extends the geometric soft theorem for scalar effective field theories by allowing the massless scalar to couple to other scalars, fermions, and gauge bosons. The soft theorem keeps its geometric form, but where the field-space geometry now involves the full field content of the theory. As a bonus, we also present novel double soft theorems with fermions, which mimic the geometric structure of the double soft theorem for scalars.

Soft scalars in effective field theory

Starting with on-shell amplitudes compatible with the scattering of Kerr black holes up to Compton-amplitude contact terms, we produce the gravitational waveform and memory effect including spin at their leading post-Minkowskian orders to all orders in the spins of both scattering objects. For the memory effect, we present results at next-to-leading order as well, finding a closed form for all spin orders when the spins are anti-aligned and equal in magnitude. Considering instead generically oriented spins, we produce the next-to-leading-order memory to sixth order in spin. Compton-amplitude contact terms up to sixth order in spin are included throughout our analysis.

Leading-order gravitational radiation to all spin orders

The geometry of field space governs on-shell scattering amplitudes. We formulate a geometric description of effective field theories which extends previous results for scalars and gauge fields to fermions. The field-space geometry reorganizes and simplifies the computation of quantum loop corrections. Using this geometric framework, we calculate the fermion loop contributions to the renormalization group equations for bosonic operators in the Standard Model Effective Field Theory up to mass dimension eight.

Fermion geometry and the renormalization of the Standard Model Effective Field Theory

A variety of condensed matter systems describe gapless modes that can be interpreted as Nambu-Goldstone bosons of spontaneously broken Poincaré symmetry. In this paper we derive new soft theorems constraining the tree-level scattering of these degrees of freedom, as exhibited in solids, fluids, superfluids, and framids. These soft theorems are in one-to-one correspondence with various broken symmetries, including spacetime translations, Lorentz boosts, and, for the case of fluids, volume-preserving diffeomorphisms. We also implement a bootstrap in which the enhanced vanishing of amplitudes in the soft limit is taken as an input, thus sculpting out a subclass of exceptional solid, fluid, and framid theories.

Soft phonon theorems

We calculate the scattering amplitude of two rotating objects with the linear-in-curvature spin-induced multipoles of Kerr black holes at <math><mi>O</mi><mo>(</mo><msup><mi>G</mi><mn>2</mn></msup><mo>)</mo></math> and all orders in the spins of both objects. This is done including the complete set of contact terms potentially relevant to Kerr-black-hole scattering at <math><mi>O</mi><mo>(</mo><msup><mi>G</mi><mn>2</mn></msup><mo>)</mo></math>. As such, Kerr black holes should be described by this scattering amplitude for a specific choice of values for the contact-term coefficients. The inclusion of all potential contact terms means this amplitude allows for a comprehensive search for structures emerging for certain values of the coefficients, and hence special properties that might be exhibited by Kerr-black-hole scattering. Our result can also act as a template for comparison for future computations of classical gravitational high-spin scattering.

Classical gravitational scattering amplitude at <math><mi>O</mi><mo>(</mo><msup><mi>G</mi><mn>2</mn></msup><msubsup><mi>S</mi><mn>1</mn><mi>∞</mi></msubsup><msubsup><mi>S</mi><mn>2</mn><mi>∞</mi></msubsup><mo>)</mo></math>

S-matrix elements are invariant under field redefinitions of the Lagrangian. They are determined by geometric quantities such as the curvature of the field-space manifold of scalar and gauge fields. We present a formalism where scalar and gauge fields are treated together, with a metric on the combined space of both types of fields. Scalar and gauge scattering amplitudes are given by the Riemann curvature R  ijkl  of this combined space, with indices i, j, k, l chosen to be scalar or gauge indices depending on the type of external particle. One-loop divergences can also be computed in terms of geometric invariants of the combined space, which greatly simplifies the computation of renormalization group equations. We apply our formalism to the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT), and compute the renormalization group equations for even-parity bosonic operators to mass dimension eight.

Geometry in scattering amplitudes

Making use of the recently derived, all-spin, opposite-helicity Compton amplitude, we calculate the classical gravitational scattering amplitude for one spinning and one spinless object at <math><mi>O</mi><mo>(</mo><msup><mi>G</mi><mn>2</mn></msup><mo>)</mo></math> and all orders in spin. By construction, this amplitude exhibits the spin structure that has been conjectured to describe Kerr black holes. This spin structure alone is not enough to fix all deformations of the Compton amplitude by contact terms, but when combined with considerations of the ultrarelativistic limit we can uniquely assign values to the parameters remaining in the even-in-spin sector. Once these parameters are determined, much of the spin dependence of the amplitude resums into hypergeometric functions. Finally, we derive the eikonal phase for aligned-angular-momentum scattering.
