Scalar dark matter (DM), and axions in particular, have an irreducible abundance of particles produced by freeze-in due to portal interactions with the Standard Model plasma in the early Universe. In addition, vacuum misalignment and other mechanisms can lead to the presence of a cold, oscillating condensate. Therefore, generically, the evolution of the DM in both forms, condensate and particles, needs to be studied simultaneously. In non-equilibrium quantum field theory, the condensate and particles are described by one- and two-point functions, respectively. The fundamental coupled equations of motion (EoMs) of these objects are non-local. To simplify the EoMs and bring them into a familiar form for relic abundance calculations, we perform a Markovianization process for a quasi-harmonically oscillating homogeneous condensate, leading to local EoMs for the particle distribution function and the envelope function of condensate oscillation. This reduces the dynamics to a pair of coupled Boltzmann equations, and we derive explicitly the form of the collision operators for all particle and condensate interactions.

From QFT to Boltzmann: freeze-in in the presence of oscillating condensates

Atom gradiometers have emerged as compelling broadband probes of scalar ultralight dark matter (ULDM) candidates that oscillate with frequencies between approximately <math><msup><mn>10</mn><mrow><mo>−</mo><mn>2</mn></mrow></msup><mtext> </mtext><mtext> </mtext><mi>Hz</mi></math> and <math><msup><mn>10</mn><mn>3</mn></msup><mtext> </mtext><mtext> </mtext><mi>Hz</mi></math>. ULDM signals with frequencies greater than <math><mo>∼</mo><mn>1</mn><mtext> </mtext><mtext> </mtext><mi>Hz</mi></math> exceed the expected Nyquist frequency of atom gradiometers, and so are affected by aliasing and related phenomena, including signal folding and spectral distortion. To facilitate the discovery of super-Nyquist ULDM signals, in this work we investigate the impact of these effects on parameter reconstruction using a robust likelihood-based framework. We demonstrate that accurate reconstruction of ULDM parameters can be achieved as long as the experimental frequency resolution is larger than the ULDM signal linewidth. Notably, as ULDM candidates whose frequencies differ by integer multiples of the sampling frequency are identified at the same aliased frequency, our discovery analysis recovers discrete islands in parameter space. Our study represents the first comprehensive exploration of aliasing in the context of dark matter direct detection and paves the way for enhanced ULDM detection strategies with atom gradiometers.

Super-Nyquist ultralight dark matter searches with broadband atom gradiometers

Using the GAMBIT global fitting framework, we constrain the MSSM with an eV-scale gravitino as the lightest supersymmetric particle, and the six electroweakinos (neutralinos and charginos) as the only other light new states. We combine 15 ATLAS and 12 CMS searches at 13 TeV, along with a large collection of ATLAS and CMS measurements of Standard Model signatures. This model, which we refer to as the  $${{\tilde{G}}}$$  <math> <mover> <mi>G</mi> <mo>~</mo> </mover> </math>  -EWMSSM, exhibits quite varied collider phenomenology due to its many permitted electroweakino production processes and decay modes. Characteristic  $${{\tilde{G}}}$$  <math> <mover> <mi>G</mi> <mo>~</mo> </mover> </math>  -EWMSSM signal events have two or more Standard Model bosons and missing energy due to the escaping gravitinos. While much of the  $${{\tilde{G}}}$$  <math> <mover> <mi>G</mi> <mo>~</mo> </mover> </math>  -EWMSSM parameter space is excluded, we find several viable parameter regions that predict phenomenologically rich scenarios with multiple neutralinos and charginos within the kinematic reach of the LHC during Run 3, or the High Luminosity LHC. In particular, we identify scenarios with Higgsino-dominated electroweakinos as light as 140 GeV that are consistent with our combined set of collider searches and measurements. The full set of  $${{\tilde{G}}}$$  <math> <mover> <mi>G</mi> <mo>~</mo> </mover> </math>  -EWMSSM parameter samples and GAMBIT input files generated for this work is available via Zenodo.

Collider constraints on electroweakinos in the presence of a light gravitino

We assess the status of a wide class of WIMP dark matter (DM) models in light of the latest experimental results using the global fitting framework GAMBIT. We perform a global analysis of effective field theory (EFT) operators describing the interactions between a gauge-singlet Dirac fermion and the Standard Model quarks, the gluons and the photon. In this bottom-up approach, we simultaneously vary the coefficients of 14 such operators up to dimension 7, along with the DM mass, the scale of new physics and several nuisance parameters. Our likelihood functions include the latest data from Planck, direct and indirect detection experiments, and the LHC. For DM masses below 100 GeV, we find that it is impossible to satisfy all constraints simultaneously while maintaining EFT validity at LHC energies. For new physics scales around 1 TeV, our results are influenced by several small excesses in the LHC data and depend on the prescription that we adopt to ensure EFT validity. Furthermore, we find large regions of viable parameter space where the EFT is valid and the relic density can be reproduced, implying that WIMPs can still account for the DM of the universe while being consistent with the latest data.

Thermal WIMPs and the scale of new physics: global fits of Dirac dark matter effective field theories

The Scotogenic Model is one of the most minimal models to account for both neutrino masses and dark matter (DM). In this model, neutrino masses are generated at the one-loop level, and in principle, both the lightest fermion singlet and the lightest neutral component of the scalar doublet can be viable DM candidates. However, the correct DM relic abundance can only be obtained in somewhat small regions of the parameter space, as there are strong constraints stemming from lepton flavour violation, neutrino masses, electroweak precision tests and direct detection. For the case of scalar DM, a sufficiently large lepton-number-violating coupling is required, whereas for fermionic DM, coannihilations are typically necessary. In this work, we study how the new scalar singlet modifies the phenomenology of the Scotogenic Model, particularly in the case of scalar DM. We find that the new singlet modifies both the phenomenology of neutrino masses and scalar DM, and opens up a large portion of the parameter space of the original model.

The ScotoSinglet Model: a scalar singlet extension of the Scotogenic Model

The excess of electron recoil events seen by the XENON1T experiment has been interpreted as a potential signal of axion-like particles (ALPs), either produced in the Sun, or constituting part of the dark matter halo of the Milky Way. It has also been explained as a consequence of trace amounts of tritium in the experiment. We consider the evidence for the solar and dark-matter ALP hypotheses from the combination of XENON1T data and multiple astrophysical probes, including horizontal branch stars, red giants, and white dwarfs. We briefly address the influence of ALP decays and supernova cooling. While the different datasets are in clear tension for the case of solar ALPs, all measurements can be simultaneously accommodated for the case of a sub-dominant fraction of dark-matter ALPs. Nevertheless, this solution requires the tuning of several a priori unknown parameters, such that for our choices of priors a Bayesian analysis shows no strong preference for the ALP interpretation of the XENON1T excess over the background hypothesis.

Global fits of axion-like particles to XENON1T and astrophysical data

We perform a global fit within the pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone Dark Matter (DM) model emerging from an additional complex scalar singlet with a softly broken global U (1) symmetry. Leading to a momentum-suppressed DM-nucleon cross section at tree level, the model provides a natural explanation for the null results from direct detection experiments. Our global fit combines constraints from perturbative unitarity, DM relic abundance, Higgs invisible decay, electroweak precision observables and latest Higgs searches at colliders. The results are presented in both frequentist and Bayesian statisical frameworks. Furthermore, post-processing our samples, we include the likelihood from gamma-ray observations of Fermi -LAT dwarf spheroidal galaxies and compute the one-loop DM-nucleon cross section. We find two favoured regions characterised by their dominant annihilation channel: the Higgs funnel and annihilation into Higgs pairs. Both are compatible with current Fermi -LAT observations, and furthermore, can fit the slight excess observed in four dwarfs in a mass range between about 30–300 GeV. While the former region is hard to probe experimentally, the latter can partly be tested by current observations of cosmic-ray antiprotons as well as future gamma-ray observations.

Global fit of pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone Dark Matter

We perform a global fit of the extended scalar singlet model with a fermionic dark matter (DM) candidate. Using the most up-to-date results from the Planck measured DM relic density, direct detection limits from the XENON1T (2018) experiment, electroweak precision observables and Higgs searches at colliders, we constrain the 7-dimensional model parameter space. We also find regions in the model parameter space where a successful electroweak baryogenesis (EWBG) can be viable. This allows us to compute the gravitational wave (GW) signals arising from the phase transition, and discuss the potential discovery prospects of the model at current and future GW experiments. Our global fit places a strong upper and lower limit on the second scalar mass, the fermion DM mass and the scalar-fermion DM coupling. In agreement with previous studies, we find that our model can simultaneously yield a strong first-order phase transition and saturate the observed DM abundance. More importantly, the GW spectra of viable points can often be within reach of future GW experiments such as LISA, DECIGO and BBO.

Gravitational waves and electroweak baryogenesis in a global study of the extended scalar singlet model

We present global analyses of effective Higgs portal dark matter models in the frequentist and Bayesian statistical frameworks. Complementing earlier studies of the scalar Higgs portal, we use GAMBIT to determine the preferred mass and coupling ranges for models with vector, Majorana and Dirac fermion dark matter. We also assess the relative plausibility of all four models using Bayesian model comparison. Our analysis includes up-to-date likelihood functions for the dark matter relic density, invisible Higgs decays, and direct and indirect searches for weakly-interacting dark matter including the latest XENON1T data. We also account for important uncertainties arising from the local density and velocity distribution of dark matter, nuclear matrix elements relevant to direct detection, and Standard Model masses and couplings. In all Higgs portal models, we find parameter regions that can explain all of dark matter and give a good fit to all data. The case of vector dark matter requires the most tuning and is therefore slightly disfavoured from a Bayesian point of view. In the case of fermionic dark matter, we find a strong preference for including a CP-violating phase that allows suppression of constraints from direct detection experiments, with odds in favour of CP violation of the order of 100:1. Finally, we present DDCalc 2.0.0, a tool for calculating direct detection observables and likelihoods for arbitrary non-relativistic effective operators.

Global analyses of Higgs portal singlet dark matter models using GAMBIT

We analyse a simple extension of the SM with just an additional scalar singlet coupled to the Higgs boson. We discuss the possible probes for electroweak baryogenesis in this model including collider searches, gravitational wave and direct dark matter detection signals. We show that a large portion of the model parameter space exists where the observation of gravitational waves would allow detection while the indirect collider searches would not.
