In the framework of AdS/CFT correspondence, the Fefferman-Graham (FG) gauge offers a useful way to express asymptotically anti-de Sitter spaces, allowing a clear identification of their boundary structure. A known feature of this approach is that choosing a particular conformal representative for the boundary metric breaks explicitly the boundary scaling symmetry. Recent developments have shown that it is possible to generalize the FG gauge to restore boundary Weyl invariance by adopting the Weyl-Fefferman-Graham gauge. In this paper, we focus on three-dimensional gravity and study the emergence of a boundary Weyl structure when considering the most general AdS boundary conditions introduced by Grumiller and Riegler [1]. We extend the holographic renormalization scheme to incorporate Weyl covariant quantities, identifying new subleading divergences appearing at the boundary. To address these, we introduce a new codimension-two counterterm, or corner term, that ensures the finiteness of the gravitational action. From here, we construct the quantum-generating functional, the holographic stress tensor, and compute the corresponding Weyl anomaly, showing that the latter is now expressed in a full Weyl covariant way. Finally, we discuss explicit applications to holographic integrable models and accelerating black holes. For the latter, we show that the new corner term plays a crucial role in the computation of the Euclidean on-shell action.

Generalized Fefferman-Graham gauge and boundary Weyl structures

Abstract Recently, lattice formulations of Abelian chiral gauge theory in two dimensions have been devised on the basis of the Abelian bosonization. A salient feature of these 2D lattice formulations is that the gauge invariance is exactly preserved for anomaly-free theories and thus is completely free from the question of the gauge mode decoupling. In the present paper, we propose yet another lattice formulation sharing this desired property. A particularly unique point in our formulation is that the vertex operator of the dual scalar field, which carries the vector charge of the fermion and the “magnetic charge” in the bosonization, is represented by a “hole” excised from the lattice; this is the excision method formulated recently by Abe et al. in a somewhat different context.

Yet Another Lattice Formulation of 2D (1) Chiral Gauge Theory via Bosonization David Tong: lectures on gauge theory

In three-dimensional pseudo-Riemannian manifolds, the Cotton tensor arises as the variation of the gravitational Chern-Simons action with respect to the metric. It is Weyl-covariant, symmetric, traceless and covariantly conserved. Performing a reduction of the Cotton tensor with respect to Carrollian diffeomorphisms in a suitable frame, one discloses four sets of Cotton Carrollian relatives, which are conformal and obey Carrollian conservation equations. Each set of Carrollian Cotton tensors is alternatively obtained as the variation of a distinct Carroll-Chern-Simons action with respect to the degenerate metric and the clock form of a strong Carroll structure. The four Carroll-Chern-Simons actions emerge in the Carrollian reduction of the original Chern-Simons ascendant. They inherit its anomalous behaviour under diffeomorphisms and Weyl transformations. The extremums of these Carrollian actions are commented and illustrated.

Chern-Simons action and the Carrollian Cotton tensors

Ricci-flat solutions to Einstein’s equations in four dimensions are obtained as the flat limit of Einstein spacetimes with negative cosmological constant. In the limiting process, the anti-de Sitter energy-momentum tensor is expanded in Laurent series in powers of the cosmological constant, endowing the system with the infinite number of boundary data, characteristic of an asymptotically flat solution space. The governing flat Einstein dynamics is recovered as the limit of the original energy-momentum conservation law and from the additional requirement of the line-element finiteness, providing at each order the necessary set of flux-balance equations for the boundary data. This analysis is conducted using a covariant version of the Newman-Unti gauge designed for taking advantage of the boundary Carrollian structure emerging at vanishing cosmological constant and its Carrollian attributes such as the Cotton tensor.

Flat from anti de Sitter

We unravel the boundary manifestation of Ehlers’ hidden Möbius symmetry present in four-dimensional Ricci-flat spacetimes that enjoy a time-like isometry and are Petrov-algebraic. This is achieved in a designated gauge, shaped in the spirit of flat holography, where the Carrollian three-dimensional nature of the null conformal boundary is manifest and covariantly implemented. The action of the Möbius group is local on the space of Carrollian boundary data, among which the Carrollian Cotton tensor plays a predominent role. The Carrollian and Weyl geometric tools introduced for shaping an appropriate gauge, as well as the boundary conformal group, which is BMS4, allow to define electric/magnetic, leading/subleading towers of charges directly from the boundary Carrollian dynamics and explore their behaviour under the action of the Möbius duality group.

Ehlers, Carroll, charges and dual charges

We investigate the (conformally coupled) scalar field on a general Carrollian spacetime in arbitrary dimension. The analysis discloses electric and magnetic dynamics. For both, we provide the energy and the momenta of the field, accompanied by their conservation equations. We discuss the conservation and nonconservation properties resulting from the existence of conformal isometries and the associated charges. We illustrate those results for a scalar field propagating on the null boundary of four-dimensional Ricci-flat Robinson-Trautman spacetimes.

Revisiting the Carrollian scalar field

We comprehensively study Galilean and Carrollian hydrodynamics on arbitrary backgrounds, in the presence of a matter/charge conserved current. For this purpose, we follow two distinct and complementary paths. The first is based on local invariance, be it Galilean or Carrollian diffeomorphism invariance, possibly accompanied by Weyl invariance. The second consists in analyzing the relativistic fluid equations at large or small speed of light, after choosing an adapted gauge, Arnowitt-Deser-Misner-Zermelo for the former and Papapetrou-Randers for the latter. Unsurprisingly, the results agree, but the second approach is superior as it effortlessly captures more elaborate situations with multiple degrees of freedom. It furthermore allows to investigate the fate of hydrodynamic-frame invariance in the two limits at hand, and conclude that its breaking (in the Galilean) or its preservation (in the Carrollian) are fragile consequences of the behaviour of transport attributes at large or small c. Both methods do also agree on the doom of Nœtherian currents generated in the relativistic theory by isometries: conserved currents are not always guaranteed in Newton-Cartan or Carroll spacetimes as a consequence of Galilean or Carrollian isometries. Comparison of Galilean and Carrollian fluid equations exhibits a striking but often superficial resemblance, which we comment in relation to black-hole horizon dynamics, awkwardly akin to Navier-Stokes equations. This congruity is authentic in one instance though and turns out then to describe Aristotelian dynamics, which is the last item in our agenda.

Relativistic fluids, hydrodynamic frames and their Galilean versus Carrollian avatars

We derive a covariant expression for the renormalized holographic entanglement entropy for conformal field theories (CFTs) dual to quadratic curvature gravity in arbitrary dimensions. This expression is written as the sum of the bare entanglement entropy functional obtained using standard conical defect techniques, and a counterterm defined at the boundary of the extremal surface of the functional. The latter corresponds to the cod-2 self-replicating part of the extrinsic counterterms when evaluated on the replica orbifold. This renormalization method isolates the universal terms of the holographic entanglement entropy functional. We use it to compute the standard <math><mi>C</mi></math>-function candidate for CFTs of arbitrary dimension, and the type-B anomaly coefficient <math><mi>c</mi></math> for four-dimensional CFTs.

Renormalized holographic entanglement entropy for quadratic curvature gravity

We study the holographic entanglement entropy of deformed entangling regions in three-dimensional CFTs dual to Einstein-AdS gravity, using a renormalization scheme based on the addition of extrinsic counterterms. In this prescription, when even- dimensional manifolds are considered, the universal contribution to the entanglement entropy is identified as the renormalized volume of the Ryu-Takayanagi hypersurface, which is written as the sum of a topological and a curvature term. It is shown that the change in the renormalized entanglement entropy due to the deformation of the entangling surface is encoded purely in the curvature contribution. In turn, as the topological part is given by the Euler characteristic of the Ryu-Takayanagi surface, it remains shape independent. Exploiting the covariant character of the extrinsic counterterms, we apply the renormalization scheme for the case of deformed entangling regions in AdS4/CFT3, recovering the results found in the literature. Finally, we provide a derivation of the relation between renormalized entanglement entropy and Willmore energy. The presence of a lower bound of the latter makes manifest the relation between the AdS curvature of the Ryu-Takayanagi surface and the strong subadditivity property.

Shape dependence of renormalized holographic entanglement entropy

We provide a simple method to compute the energy in higher curvature gravity in asymptotically AdS spacetimes in even dimensions. It follows from the combined use of topological terms added to the gravity action, and the Wald charges derived from the augmented action functional. No additional boundary terms are needed. As a consistency check, we show that the formula for the conserved quantities derived in this way yields the correct result for the mass of asymptotically AdS black holes.
