The high-density region of the QCD phase diagram displays an intricate competition between color superconductivity and the QCD Kondo effect due to color exchange in quark matter containing a single heavy quark impurity. We explore the characteristic impurity-induced superconducting subgap states arising in such systems by generalizing the surrogate model solver, recently considered in the context of condensed matter physics [<a href="http://dx.doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevB.108.L220506">Phys. Rev. B 108, L220506 (2023)</a>]. The method consists of approximating the full superconducting bulk by only a small number of effective levels whose parameters are chosen so as to best reproduce the Matsubara frequency dependence of the impurity-bulk hybridization function. We numerically solve a surrogate QCD Kondo model describing a quantum impurity color exchange coupled to a two-color two-flavor superconducting bulk. The results directly indicate the presence of multiple phase transitions as the coupling of the impurity to the bulk is increased, due to the interplay between various overscreened states. The methods introduced here are straightforward enough to be extended to more realistic QCD scenarios.

Yu-Shiba-Rusinov states in color-superconducting quark matter

We revisit the evolution of cosmic acceleration in a spatially flat $$w_0w_a$$ CDM universe, in which the equation of state of dark energy takes the CPL parametrization, using the latest baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) measurements from the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI), in combination with Planck cosmic microwave background (CMB) data and several type Ia supernova datasets, including PantheonPlus, Union3, and DESY5. We analyze the deceleration parameter $\textit{q}$($\textit{z}$) and the jerk parameter $\textit{j}$($\textit{z}$) and further validate our results using the $\textit{Om}$($\textit{z}$) diagnostic. Our findings indicate significant deviations from the predictions of the $$\Lambda $$ CDM model. Specifically, DESI BAO, DESI BAO + CMB, DESI BAO + CMB + Union3, and DESI BAO + CMB + DESY5 all provide strong evidence for a slowing down of cosmic acceleration at late times, as indicated by $$j(0) < 0$$ at more than 1 $$\sigma $$ confidence level, within the framework of $$w_0w_a$$ CDM model. These results suggest that in the $$w_0w_a$$ CDM universe cosmic acceleration has already peaked and is now in a phase of decline.

Revisiting cosmic acceleration with DESI BAO

We study $ \cos2\phi $ azimuthal asymmetry in doubly longitudinally polarized proton-proton Drell-Yan collisions within the transverse momentum dependent factorization framework. The asymmetry arises from the convolution of the longitudinal transversity distribution $ h_{1L}^{\perp} $ for both protons. Using the Bacchetta-Delcarro-Pisano-Radici-Signori parameterization for the nonperturbative Sudakov form factor and the Wandzura-Wilczek approximation for collinear $ h_{1L}^{\perp} $ , we predict the double spin asymmetry $ A_{LL}^{\cos2\phi} $ at RHIC and NICA kinematics. Our results demonstrate sensitivity to sea quark distributions, with the asymmetry reaching up to 25% for maximal sea quark contributions. These predictions highlight the potential of polarized Drell-Yan measurements to probe sea quark dynamics and advance our understanding of nucleon structures.

Erratum to: A model of inflation consistent with Planck 2018 and BICEP/Keck data

We study the transverse momentum ( $p_T$ ) differential anisotropic flow and flow fluctuation in Pb+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}$ =5.02 TeV at the LHC. A (3+1)-dimensional CLVisc hydrodynamics framework with fluctuating TRENTO (or AMPT) initial conditions is utilized to simulate the space-time evolution of the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) medium. The effects of shear viscosity and the sub-nucleon structure on anisotropic flow and flow fluctuation are analyzed. Our result shows that shear viscosity tends to suppress both flow coefficients ( ${v_2\{2}\}$ , ${v_2\{4\}}$ , and ${\langle v_2\rangle}$ ) and flow fluctuation ( ${\sigma_{v_2}}$ ) owing to its smearing effect on local density fluctuation. The flow coefficients appear to be insensitive to the sub-nucleon structure, whereas the flow fluctuation ${\sigma_{v_2}}$ tends to be suppressed by the sub-nucleon structure in central collisions but enhanced in peripheral collisions. After taking into account the sub-nucleon structure effect, our numerical result can qualitatively describe the relative flow fluctuations ( ${v_2\{4\}/v_2\{2\}}$ , $F({v_2})$ ) measured by the ALICE Collaboration at the LHC. We further investigate the effects of shear viscosity, sub-nucleon structure, and initial condition model on the flow angle and flow magnitude decorrelations ( ${A_2^f}$ , ${M_2^f}$ ) using the four-particle correlation method. We find that the flow decorrelation effect is typically stronger in central collisions than in peripheral collisions. The flow angle decorrelation is found to be insensitive to the shear viscosity and sub-nucleon structure, whereas the flow magnitude decorrelation shows quite different behaviors when using the TRENTO and AMPT initial condition models. Our study sheds light on the anisotropic flow, transport properties, and initial structure of the QGP created in high-energy nuclear collisions.

We establish a phenomenological inflation model in this paper and find that the predicted values of the spectral index and the tensor-to-scalar ratio are well consistent with the results from the Planck 2018 survey and the BICEP/Keck array measurement, significantly improving the theoretical precision in describing the early universe’s inflationary process. After inflation, we find that preheating can occur from the tachyonic instability or the parametric resonance, which depends on the value of one of model parameters.

A model of inflation consistent with Planck 2018 and BICEP/Keck data

We have discovered an interaction between two detectors in a vacuum that emerges exclusively due to acceleration, akin to the spontaneous excitation of a single detector as predicted by the Fulling-Davies-Unruh (FDU) effect. However, this interaction contrasts sharply with the FDU effect, which suggests that a uniformly accelerated detector behaves as if it were in a thermal bath, as the discovered interaction does not manifest in a thermal environment. The novel interaction displays unique dependencies on the separation between detectors: it can be either attractive or repulsive, with the potential to transition between these behaviors as the inter-detector separation changes. More intriguingly, it exhibits a surprising large-small duality in its dependence on acceleration, suggesting the existence of an optimal acceleration at which the interaction is strongest, in contrast to the monotonic acceleration-dependence of the FDU effect.

Interaction between Unruh-Dewitt detectors exclusively due to acceleration: A parallel to the FDU effect

In this paper, we extend the method of calculating the entanglement entropy of Hawking radiation of black holes using the “in” vacuum state, which describes one-sided asymptotically flat neutral black hole formed by gravitational collapse, to dynamic charged black holes. We explore the influence of charge on the position of the boundary of island ∂I and the Page time. Due to their distinct geometric structures, we discuss non-extremal and extremal charged black holes separately. In non-extremal cases, the emergence of island saves the bound of entropy at late times, and the entanglement entropy of Hawking radiation satisfies the Page curve. Moreover, we also find that the position of the boundary of island ∂I depends on the position of the cutoff surface (observers), differing from the behavior in eternal charged black holes. In extremal black holes, when the island exists, the entanglement entropy is approximately equal to the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy, while the entanglement entropy becomes ill-defined when island is absent. Our analysis underscores how different geometric configurations significantly influence the behavior of entropy.

Entanglement island and Page curve for one-sided charged black hole

In a quantum sense, vacuum is not an empty void but full of virtual particles (fields). It may have long-range properties, be altered, and even undergo phase transitions. It is suggested that long-range properties of a quantum vacuum may be probed by distributing matter over a large spatial volume. Here, we study a simplest example of such, i.e., two uniformly accelerated Unruh-DeWitt detectors which are spatially separated, and examine the inter-detector interaction energy arising from the coupling between the detectors and fluctuating fields to see if novel phenomena related to the long-range properties emerge of a vacuum altered by uniformly accelerating two spatially separated detectors through it. Our results show that when the inter-detector separation is much larger than the thermal wavelength of the Unruh thermal bath, the inter-detector interaction displays a completely new behavior, which, as compared with that of the inertial detectors, is surprisingly exclusively acceleration-dependent, signaling a new phase of the vacuum in which its imprint as seen by two inertial observers seems to be completely wiped out. Moreover, we demonstrate that the inter-detector interaction in the near region can be significantly enhanced by the accelerated motion in certain circumstances, and with two Rydberg atoms as the detectors, the acceleration required for an experimentally detectable enhancement of the interaction energy can be 10 5 times smaller than that required for the detection of the Unruh effect.

Probing long-range properties of vacuum altered by uniformly accelerating two spatially separated Unruh-DeWitt detectors

We investigate the entanglement harvesting phenomenon for static detectors that locally interact with massless scalar fields in the cosmic string spacetime, which, though locally flat, features a conical structure defined by a deficit angle. Specifically, we analyze three detector alignments relative to the string: parallel and orthogonal alignments with detectors on the same side of the string, and an orthogonal alignment with detectors on opposite sides of the string. For the alignments on the same side of the string, we observe that the cosmic string’s presence can either aid or hinder entanglement harvesting, affecting both the extent of entanglement harvested and the achievable range of interdetector separation. This effect depends on the distance between the detectors and the string and differs markedly from scenarios in a locally flat spacetime with a reflecting boundary, where the boundary invariably extends the harvesting-achievable range. Conversely, for the alignment with detectors on opposite sides of the string, we find that detectors consistently harvest more entanglement than those in a flat spacetime devoid of a cosmic string. This starkly contrasts the behavior observed with detectors on the same side. Interestingly, the presence of a cosmic string expands the harvesting-achievable range for detectors in orthogonal alignment only when near the string, whereas it invariably reduces the achievable range for detectors in parallel alignment.
