A search for heavy neutral gauge bosons (<math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mrow><msup><mrow><mi>Z</mi></mrow><mrow><mo>′</mo></mrow></msup></mrow></math>) decaying into a pair of tau leptons is performed in proton-proton collisions at <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><msqrt><mi>s</mi></msqrt><mo>=</mo><mn>13</mn><mtext> </mtext><mtext> </mtext><mi>TeV</mi></math> at the CERN LHC. The data were collected with the CMS detector and correspond to an integrated luminosity of <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mn>138</mn><mtext> </mtext><mtext> </mtext><msup><mi>fb</mi><mrow><mo>−</mo><mn>1</mn></mrow></msup></math>. The observations are found to be in agreement with the expectation from standard model processes. Limits at 95% confidence level are set on the product of the <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mrow><msup><mrow><mi>Z</mi></mrow><mrow><mo>′</mo></mrow></msup></mrow></math> production cross section and its branching fraction to tau lepton pairs for a range of <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mrow><msup><mrow><mi>Z</mi></mrow><mrow><mo>′</mo></mrow></msup></mrow></math> boson masses. For a narrow resonance in the sequential standard model scenario, a <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mrow><msup><mrow><mi>Z</mi></mrow><mrow><mo>′</mo></mrow></msup></mrow></math> boson with a mass below 3.5 TeV is excluded. This is the most stringent limit to date from this type of search.

Search for heavy neutral resonances decaying to tau lepton pairs in proton-proton collisions at <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mrow><msqrt><mrow><mi>s</mi></mrow></msqrt><mo>=</mo><mn>13</mn><mtext> </mtext><mtext> </mtext><mi>TeV</mi></mrow></math>

The value of the strong coupling <math altimg='si1.svg'><msub><mrow><mi>&#945;</mi></mrow><mrow><mi mathvariant='normal'>S</mi></mrow></msub></math> is determined in a comprehensive analysis at next-to-next-to-leading order accuracy in quantum chromodynamics. The analysis uses double-differential cross section measurements from the CMS Collaboration at the CERN LHC of inclusive jet production in proton-proton collisions at centre-of-mass energies of 2.76, 7, 8, and 13&#8239;TeV, combined with inclusive deep-inelastic data from HERA. The value <math altimg='si2.svg'><msub><mrow><mi>&#945;</mi></mrow><mrow><mi mathvariant='normal'>S</mi></mrow></msub><mo stretchy='false'>(</mo><msub><mrow><mi>m</mi></mrow><mrow><mi mathvariant='normal'>Z</mi></mrow></msub><mo stretchy='false'>)</mo><mo linebreak='goodbreak' linebreakstyle='after'>=</mo><mn>0.1176</mn><mspace width='0.2em' /><msubsup><mrow /><mrow><mo linebreak='badbreak' linebreakstyle='after'>&#8722;</mo><mn>0.0016</mn></mrow><mrow><mo linebreak='badbreak' linebreakstyle='after'>+</mo><mn>0.0014</mn></mrow></msubsup></math> is obtained at the scale of the Z boson mass. By using the measurements in different intervals of jet transverse momentum, the running of <math altimg='si1.svg'><msub><mrow><mi>&#945;</mi></mrow><mrow><mi mathvariant='normal'>S</mi></mrow></msub></math> is probed for energies between 100 and 1600&#8239;GeV.

Determination of the strong coupling and its running from measurements of inclusive jet production

A measurement of the Higgs boson mass and width via its decay to two <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mi>Z</mi></math> bosons is presented. Proton-proton collision data collected by the CMS experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mn>138</mn><mtext> </mtext><mtext> </mtext><msup><mi>fb</mi><mrow><mo>−</mo><mn>1</mn></mrow></msup></math> at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, is used. The invariant mass distribution of four leptons in the on-shell Higgs boson decay is used to measure its mass and constrain its width. This yields the most precise single measurement of the Higgs boson mass to date, <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mn>125.04</mn><mo>±</mo><mn>0.12</mn><mtext> </mtext><mtext> </mtext><mi>GeV</mi></math>, and an upper limit on the width <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><msub><mi mathvariant="normal">Γ</mi><mi>H</mi></msub><mo>&lt;</mo><mn>330</mn><mtext> </mtext><mtext> </mtext><mi>MeV</mi></math> at 95% confidence level. A combination of the on- and off-shell Higgs boson production decaying to four leptons is used to determine the Higgs boson width, assuming that no new virtual particles affect the production, a premise that is tested by adding new heavy particles in the gluon fusion loop model. This result is combined with a previous CMS analysis of the off-shell Higgs boson production with decay to two leptons and two neutrinos, giving a measured Higgs boson width of <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><msubsup><mn>3.0</mn><mrow><mo>−</mo><mn>1.5</mn></mrow><mrow><mo>+</mo><mn>2.0</mn></mrow></msubsup><mtext> </mtext><mtext> </mtext><mi>MeV</mi></math>, in agreement with the standard model prediction of 4.1 MeV. The strength of the off-shell Higgs boson production is also reported. The scenario of no off-shell Higgs boson production is excluded at a confidence level corresponding to 3.8 standard deviations.

No signal is observed. Search for heavy neutral Higgs bosons A and H in the t <math altimg='si1.svg'><mover accent='true'><mrow><mtext>t</mtext></mrow><mrow><mo stretchy='false'>&#175;</mo></mrow></mover></math>Z channel in proton-proton collisions at 13 TeV

Energy-energy correlators are constructed by averaging the number of charged particle pairs within jets, weighted by the product of their transverse momenta, as a function of the angular separation of the particles within a pair. They are sensitive to a multitude of perturbative and nonperturbative quantum chromodynamics phenomena in high-energy particle collisions. Using lead-lead data recorded with the CMS detector, energy-energy correlators inside high transverse momentum jets are measured in heavy ion collisions for the first time. The data are obtained at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of 5.02 TeV and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 1.70 <math altimg='si1.svg'><mspace width='0.2em' /><msup><mrow><mtext>nb</mtext></mrow><mrow><mo linebreak='badbreak' linebreakstyle='after'>&#8722;</mo><mn>1</mn></mrow></msup></math>. A similar analysis is done for proton-proton collisions at the same center-of-mass energy to establish a reference. The ratio of lead-lead to proton-proton energy-energy correlators reveals significant jet substructure modifications in the quark-gluon plasma. The results are compared to different models that incorporate either color coherence or medium response effects, where the two effects predict similar substructure modifications.

Observation of nuclear modification of energy-energy correlators inside jets in heavy ion collisions

The forward-backward asymmetry in Drell–Yan production and the effective leptonic electroweak mixing angle are measured in proton-proton collisions at <math altimg='si2.svg'><msqrt><mrow><mi>s</mi></mrow></msqrt><mo linebreak='goodbreak' linebreakstyle='after'>=</mo><mn>13</mn></math> TeV, collected by the CMS experiment and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 <math altimg='si3.svg'><mspace width='0.2em' /><msup><mrow><mtext>fb</mtext></mrow><mrow><mo linebreak='badbreak' linebreakstyle='after'>&#8722;</mo><mn>1</mn></mrow></msup></math>. The measurement uses both dimuon and dielectron events, and is performed as a function of the dilepton mass and rapidity. The unfolded angular coefficient <math altimg='si4.svg'><msub><mrow><mi>A</mi></mrow><mrow><mn>4</mn></mrow></msub></math> is also extracted, as a function of the dilepton mass and rapidity. Using the CT18Z set of parton distribution functions, we obtain <math altimg='si5.svg'><msup><mrow><mi mathvariant='normal'>sin</mi></mrow><mrow><mn>2</mn></mrow></msup><mo>&#8289;</mo><msubsup><mrow><mi>&#952;</mi></mrow><mrow><mtext>eff</mtext></mrow><mrow><mi mathvariant='italic'>&#8467;</mi></mrow></msubsup><mo linebreak='goodbreak' linebreakstyle='after'>=</mo><mn>0.23152</mn><mo>&#177;</mo><mn>0.00031</mn></math>, where the uncertainty includes the experimental and theoretical contributions. The measured value agrees with the standard model fit result to global experimental data. This is the most precise <math altimg='si159.svg'><msup><mrow><mi mathvariant='normal'>sin</mi></mrow><mrow><mn>2</mn></mrow></msup><mo>&#8289;</mo><msubsup><mrow><mi>&#952;</mi></mrow><mrow><mtext>eff</mtext></mrow><mrow><mi mathvariant='italic'>&#8467;</mi></mrow></msubsup></math> measurement at a hadron collider, with a precision comparable to the results obtained at LEP and SLD.

Measurement of the Drell–Yan forward-backward asymmetry and of the effective leptonic weak mixing angle in proton-proton collisions at <math altimg='si1.svg'><msqrt><mrow><mi>s</mi></mrow></msqrt><mo linebreak='goodbreak' linebreakstyle='after'>=</mo><mn>13</mn><mrow><mspace width='0.20em' /><mtext>TeV</mtext></mrow></math>

A search is presented for rare decays of the <inline-figure xmlns:ns0='http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink'><link locator='fx001' ns0:type='simple' ns0:href='pii:S0370269325002230/fx001' ns0:role='http://data.elsevier.com/vocabulary/ElsevierContentTypes/23.4' id='ln0620' /><alt-text role='short' id='at0660'>Image 1</alt-text></inline-figure> and Higgs bosons to a photon and a <inline-figure xmlns:ns0='http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink'><link locator='fx002' ns0:type='simple' ns0:href='pii:S0370269325002230/fx002' ns0:role='http://data.elsevier.com/vocabulary/ElsevierContentTypes/23.4' id='ln0630' /><alt-text role='short' id='at0670'>Image 2</alt-text></inline-figure> or a <inline-figure xmlns:ns0='http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink'><link locator='fx003' ns0:type='simple' ns0:href='pii:S0370269325002230/fx003' ns0:role='http://data.elsevier.com/vocabulary/ElsevierContentTypes/23.4' id='ln0640' /><alt-text role='short' id='at0680'>Image 3</alt-text></inline-figure> meson, with the charmonium state subsequentially decaying to a pair of muons. The data set corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 123 <math altimg='si3.svg'><mspace width='0.2em' /><msup><mrow><mtext>fb</mtext></mrow><mrow><mo linebreak='badbreak' linebreakstyle='after'>&#8722;</mo><mn>1</mn></mrow></msup></math> of proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13&#8239;TeV collected with the CMS detector at the LHC. No evidence for branching fractions of these rare decay channels larger than predicted in the standard model is observed. Search for rare decays of the Z and Higgs bosons to a J <math altimg='si1.svg'><mo stretchy='false'>/</mo><mspace width='-1.00pt' /><mi mathvariant='normal'>&#968;</mi></math> or &#968;(2S) meson and a photon in proton-proton collisions at <math altimg='si2.svg'><msqrt><mrow><mi>s</mi></mrow></msqrt><mo linebreak='goodbreak' linebreakstyle='after'>=</mo><mn>13</mn><mspace width='0.2em' /><mtext>TeV</mtext></math>

An analysis is presented based on models of the intrinsic transverse momentum (intrinsic <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><msub><mi>k</mi><mi mathvariant="normal">T</mi></msub></math>) of partons in nucleons by studying the dilepton transverse momentum in Drell-Yan events. Using parameter tuning in event generators and existing data from fixed-target experiments and from hadron colliders, our investigation spans 3 orders of magnitude in center-of-mass energy and 2 orders of magnitude in dilepton invariant mass. The results show an energy-scaling behavior of the intrinsic <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><msub><mi>k</mi><mi mathvariant="normal">T</mi></msub></math> parameters, independent of the dilepton invariant mass at a given center-of-mass energy.

Energy-scaling behavior of intrinsic transverse-momentum parameters in Drell-Yan simulation

A search is presented for fractionally charged particles with charges below <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mn>1</mn><mi>e</mi></math>, using their small energy loss in the tracking detector as a key variable to observe a signal. The analyzed dataset corresponds to an integrated luminosity of <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mrow><mn>138</mn><mtext> </mtext><mtext> </mtext><msup><mrow><mi>fb</mi></mrow><mrow><mo>−</mo><mn>1</mn></mrow></msup></mrow></math> of proton-proton collisions collected at <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><msqrt><mi>s</mi></msqrt><mo>=</mo><mn>13</mn><mtext> </mtext><mtext> </mtext><mi>TeV</mi></math> in 2016–2018 at the CERN LHC. This is the first search at the LHC for new particles with a charge between <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mi>e</mi><mo>/</mo><mn>3</mn></math> and <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mn>0.9</mn><mi>e</mi></math>, including an extension of previous results at a charge of <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mn>2</mn><mi>e</mi><mo>/</mo><mn>3</mn></math>. Masses up to 640 GeV and charges as low as <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mi>e</mi><mo>/</mo><mn>3</mn></math> are excluded at 95% confidence level. These are the most stringent limits to date for the considered Drell-Yan-like production mode.

Search for Fractionally Charged Particles in Proton-Proton Collisions at <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mrow><msqrt><mrow><mi>s</mi></mrow></msqrt><mo>=</mo><mn>13</mn><mtext> </mtext><mtext> </mtext><mi>TeV</mi></mrow></math>

A full set of optimized observables is measured in an angular analysis of the decay <math altimg='si2.svg'><msup><mrow><mi mathvariant='normal'>B</mi></mrow><mrow><mn>0</mn></mrow></msup><mo stretchy='false'>&#8594;</mo><msup><mrow><mi mathvariant='normal'>K</mi></mrow><mrow><mo>&#8270;</mo></mrow></msup><msup><mrow><mo stretchy='false'>(</mo><mn>892</mn><mo stretchy='false'>)</mo></mrow><mrow><mn>0</mn></mrow></msup><msup><mrow><mi mathvariant='normal'>&#956;</mi></mrow><mrow><mo linebreak='badbreak' linebreakstyle='after'>+</mo></mrow></msup><msup><mrow><mi mathvariant='normal'>&#956;</mi></mrow><mrow><mo linebreak='badbreak' linebreakstyle='after'>&#8722;</mo></mrow></msup></math> using a sample of proton-proton collisions at <math altimg='si3.svg'><msqrt><mrow><mi>s</mi></mrow></msqrt><mo linebreak='goodbreak' linebreakstyle='after'>=</mo><mn>13</mn><mspace width='0.2em' /><mtext>TeV</mtext></math>, collected with the CMS detector at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 140 <hsp sp='0.20' /> <math altimg='si4.svg'><msup><mrow><mtext>fb</mtext></mrow><mrow><mo linebreak='badbreak' linebreakstyle='after'>&#8722;</mo><mn>1</mn></mrow></msup></math>. The analysis is performed in six bins of the squared invariant mass of the dimuon system, <math altimg='si5.svg'><msup><mrow><mi>q</mi></mrow><mrow><mn>2</mn></mrow></msup></math>, over the range <math altimg='si6.svg'><mn>1.1</mn><mo linebreak='goodbreak' linebreakstyle='after'>&lt;</mo><msup><mrow><mi>q</mi></mrow><mrow><mn>2</mn></mrow></msup><mo linebreak='goodbreak' linebreakstyle='after'>&lt;</mo><mn>16</mn><mspace width='0.2em' /><msup><mrow><mtext>GeV</mtext></mrow><mrow><mn>2</mn></mrow></msup></math>. The results are among the most precise experimental measurements of the angular observables for this decay and are compared to a variety of predictions based on the standard model. Some of these predictions exhibit tension with the measurements.
