In this work, we explore the possibility of probing the mass ordering sensitivity as a function of supernova distance in the context of the ongoing neutrino experiment NO <italic>&#957;</italic>A. We provide a detailed study of the active-active and active-sterile mixing frameworks, illustrating how supernova neutrinos can be used to realize the existence of sterile neutrinos. Interestingly, we infer that observation of the NC channel alone can differentiate between the presence and absence of sterile neutrinos. Our results indicate that the primary channel of NO <italic>&#957;</italic>A can distinguish normal mass ordering from inverted mass ordering at 5 <italic>&#963;</italic> confidence level for a supernova explosion occurring at a distance of 5 kpc. Additionally, we examine the impact of systematic uncertainties on mass ordering sensitivity, showing that higher levels of systematics lead to a reduction in sensitivity. Similarly, the inclusion of energy smearing significantly diminishes ordering sensitivity.

Probing neutrino mass ordering with supernova neutrinos at NO <italic>&#957;</italic>A including the effect of sterile neutrinos

Dark photons coupling to $$L_\mu -L_\tau $$ lepton number difference are a highly studied light dark matter candidate, with potential to be discovered through their impact on terrestrial neutrino oscillation experiments. We re-examine this in the light of claimed tensions between the NO $$\nu $$ A and T2K long baseline experiments, also taking into account data from the MINOS experiment. We obtain leading limits on the $$L_\mu -L_\tau $$ gauge coupling $$g'$$ versus dark photon mass $$m_{A'}$$ , improving upon previous bounds by up to a factor of five. We find no statistically significant alleviation of the tension from inclusion of the new physics effect.

Dark photon distortions of NO $$\nu $$ A and T2K neutrino oscillations

This work establishes a series of no-go conjectures that impose rigorous constraints on the zero mode localization of bulk fields in braneworld scenarios, specifically affecting gauge and spinor fields within five-dimensional spacetimes. Our approach differs from traditional methods as it does not rely on specific equations of motion, making our results broadly applicable across various braneworld models. These no-go conditions reveal fundamental limitations in field localization, challenging the feasibility of embedding fields on the brane. For instance, our analysis demonstrates that existing models fail to achieve consistent localization for gauge and spinor fields. Additionally, one of our conditions indicates that the effective Lagrangian on the brane cannot exhibit conformal invariance.

Constraints on bulk fields: no-go conjectures for braneworld models

We propose a novel <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><msub><mi>R</mi><mi>ξ</mi></msub></math> gauge in the five-vector (5V) framework within the Abelian Higgs model. In the Cartesian basis of the complex Higgs field, the 5V <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><msub><mi>R</mi><mi>ξ</mi></msub></math> gauge ensures nondivergent tree-level amplitudes for each Feynman diagram in the high-energy limit. This framework pinpoints the origin of high-energy divergences in tree-level amplitudes for each diagram, providing a criterion for quantifying the degree of divergences from other gauges. The 5V description necessitates treating the Goldstone field as the fifth gauge-field component, offering deeper insight into the dynamics of massive gauge bosons, particularly its longitudinal mode. The impact of this framework is demonstrated by rigorously comparing tree-level amplitudes from the 5V <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><msub><mi>R</mi><mi>ξ</mi></msub></math> gauge with those from the conventional 4V <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><msub><mi>R</mi><mi>ξ</mi></msub></math> gauge and the Feynman diagram gauge, the latter of which exhibits no gauge cancellation, similar to the 5V <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><msub><mi>R</mi><mi>ξ</mi></msub></math> gauge.

No gauge cancellation at high energy in the five-vector <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><msub><mi>R</mi><mi>ξ</mi></msub></math> gauge

Massless higher-spin fields show no preference for any value of the cosmological constant in 3$\textit{d}$. All matter-free higher-spin gravities in 3d are equivalent to Chern-Simons theories with an appropriate choice of gauge algebra. For various reasons, including holography, it is important to enrich them with matter fields. In ($\textit{A}$)$\textit{dS}$ , the coupling of matter fields to higher-spin fields is well-known to the leading order and is determined by the representation theory. We extend this result to flat space, where the relevant higher-spin algebra is the Poisson algebra, aka $\textit{w}$ . However, we show that both in flat and ($\textit{A}$)$\textit{dS}$ spaces there are no nontrivial higher order deformations/interactions. Nevertheless, by enlarging the field content with some auxiliary fields and taking advantage of the chiral higher-spin gravity’s vertices, it is possible to construct an exotic matter-coupled theory on ($\textit{A}$)$\textit{dS}$ that is perturbatively local. It also admits a flat limit. The equations of motion have the form of a Poisson sigma-model and a meaningful action has the form of a Courant sigma-model. We also explore the potential for embedding this theory into a holographic duality.

Matter-coupled higher spin gravities in 3$\textit{d}$: no- and yes-go results

We consider a general dynamical, spherically symmetric background in the cubic subclass of Horndeski theory and obtain the quadratic action for the perturbations. We analyze the stability conditions for high-energy modes and study the issue of the no-go theorem. We formulate the no-go theorem for weak dependence on one variable (time or radial) and derive its generalization to the cases which could be reduced by coordinate transformation to scenarios where the scalar field has weak dependence on one of the coordinates. Moreover, we show that a wide class of singular solutions is also prohibited within the cubic subclass of Horndeski theory.

No-Go theorem in the cubic subclass of Horndeski theory for spherically symmetric dynamical background

In this work, we perform computations of inclusive jet, and semi-inclusive jet-hadron cross sections for minimum bias oxygen-oxygen collisions at RHIC and LHC collision energies. We compute the no-quenching baseline for the jet nuclear modification factor $\textit{R}$ and jet-, and hadron-triggered semi-inclusive nuclear modification factors $\textit{I}$ . We do this with state-of-the-art nuclear parton distribution functions (nPDFs), next-to-leading-order matrix elements, parton shower, and hadronization. We observe deviations from unity due to cold-nuclear matter effects, even without quenching. We demonstrate that the parton distribution uncertainties constitute a significant obstacle in detecting energy loss in small collision systems. Hadron-triggered observables are particularly sensitive to uncertainties due to correlations between the trigger and analyzed particles. For jet-triggered $\textit{I}$ , there exists a kinematic window in which nPDF and scale uncertainties cancel dramatically while showing little sensitivity to parton shower and hadronization models, addressing a major limiting factor for energy loss discovery in small systems.

No-quenching baseline for energy loss signals in oxygen-oxygen collisions

When reduced from 10 to <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mn>10</mn><mo>−</mo><mi>d</mi></math> dimensions tree-level string theory exhibits an <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mi>O</mi><mo stretchy="false">(</mo><mi>d</mi><mo>,</mo><mi>d</mi><mo stretchy="false">)</mo></math> symmetry. This symmetry, which is closely related to <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mi>T</mi></math> duality, appears only after certain field redefinitions. We find a simple form for a subset of these redefinitions at order <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><msup><mrow><mi>α</mi></mrow><mrow><mo>′</mo><mn>3</mn></mrow></msup></math> and show that they cannot be lifted to ten dimensions. This is inconsistent with “manifestly <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mi>T</mi></math> duality invariant” approaches such as generalized geometry (in the uncompactified setting). Such formulations therefore seem not to be the correct language to describe string theory.

Building on previous work on de Sitter extremal surfaces anchored at the future boundary, we study no-boundary extremal surfaces in slow-roll inflation models, with perturbations to no-boundary global preserving the spatial isometry. While in pure de Sitter space the Euclidean hemisphere gives a real area equalling half de Sitter entropy, the no-boundary extremal surface areas here have nontrivial real and imaginary pieces overall. We evaluate the area integrals in the complex time-plane defining appropriate contours. For the 4-dim case, the real and imaginary finite corrections at leading order in the slow-roll parameter match those in the semiclassical expansion of the Wavefunction (or action), and corroborate the cosmic brane interpretation discussed previously. We also study no-boundary extremal surfaces in other cosmologies including 3-dimensional inflation and Schwarzschild de Sitter spaces with small mass.

No-boundary extremal surfaces in slow-roll inflation and other cosmologies

We show how a nonlocal gravitational interaction can circumvent the Weinberg no-go theorem on cosmological constant, which forbids the existence of any solution to the cosmological constant problem within the context of local field theories unless some fine-tuning is assumed. In particular, Infinite Derivative Gravity theories hint at a possible understanding of the cosmological constant as a nonlocal gravitational effect on very large scales. In this perspective, one can describe the observed cosmic acceleration in terms of an effective field theory without relying on the fine-tuning of parameters or additional matter fields.
