ATLAS, a general-purpose experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), makes use of a large internationally-distributed computing infrastructure, including over $$10^6$$ TB of managed data on disk and tape and almost one million simultaneously running CPU cores. Upgrades for the High-Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) will increase the required computing resources by a factor of 3–4 by the beginning of the 2030s, and by an order of magnitude before the conclusion of data taking at the beginning of the 2040s. These resources are spread over around 100 computing sites worldwide. Efforts are underway within the experiment to evaluate and mitigate various aspects of the environmental impact of the sites, with the additional long-term goal of making recommendations to the sites that will significantly reduce the total expected environmental impact in the HL-LHC era. These efforts take several forms: building awareness in the experiment community, adjusting aspects of the computing policy, and modifications of data center configurations, either in ways that take advantage of particular features of ATLAS workloads or in generic ways that reduce the environmental impact of the computing resources. This paper describes the ongoing investigations and approaches that have already provided useful and actionable outcomes.

The environmental impact, carbon emissions and sustainability of computing in the ATLAS experiment

In the present work, we perform a combined analysis of the cross sections for $$e^+ e^- \rightarrow K^+ K^-$$ and $$e^+ e^- \rightarrow K_S^0 K_L^0$$ by including the interference between direct coupling process and resonance intermediate process. When setting the isospin factor as a free parameter, we can well reproduce the structures in the cross sections for $$e^+ e^- \rightarrow K^+ K^-$$ and $$e^+ e^- \rightarrow K_S^0 K_L^0,$$ however, the isospin factor deviates with the isospin symmetry conservation predicted value of one. By fixing the isospin factor to be one, we find the cross sections for $$e^+ e^-\rightarrow K^+ K^-$$ can be accurately fitted, while the same model parameters fail to adequately reproduce the observed cross section for the process $$e^+ e^- \rightarrow K_S^0 K_L^0,$$ which indicate that there should be contributions from other vector meson states, such as $$\rho (2150)$$ and $$\omega (2220).$$ The combined analysis with $$\phi (2170),$$ $$\omega (2220)$$ and $$\rho (2150)$$ indicate that the inclusion of $$\rho (2150)$$ can improve the descriptions of the cross sections for $$e^+ e^-\rightarrow K^+ K^-$$ and $$e^+ e^- \rightarrow K_S^0 K_L^0.$$

A combined analysis of $\textit{Y}$(2240) in the $$e^+ e^- \rightarrow K^+ K^-$$ and $$e^+ e^- \rightarrow K_S^0 K_L^0$$ processes

The LHCb Collaboration has recently found a large <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mi>C</mi><mi>P</mi></math>-violating rate asymmetry in the <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mi>b</mi></math>-baryon decay <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><msubsup><mi mathvariant="normal">Λ</mi><mi>b</mi><mn>0</mn></msubsup><mo stretchy="false">→</mo><mi>p</mi><msup><mi>K</mi><mo>−</mo></msup><msup><mi>π</mi><mo>+</mo></msup><msup><mi>π</mi><mo>−</mo></msup></math>. This is the first observation of <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mi>C</mi><mi>P</mi></math> violation in baryon processes, opening a new window to test its standard model (SM) origin. Many more baryon decays are expected to exhibit observable signals of <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mi>C</mi><mi>P</mi></math> violation. These predictions can be tested in the near future.

A search for the dimuon decay of the Higgs boson is presented based on <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mi>p</mi><mi>p</mi></math> collision data recorded by ATLAS during Run 3 of the Large Hadron Collider, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mrow><mn>165</mn><mtext> </mtext><mtext> </mtext><msup><mrow><mi>fb</mi></mrow><mrow><mo>−</mo><mn>1</mn></mrow></msup></mrow></math> at <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mrow><msqrt><mrow><mi>s</mi></mrow></msqrt><mo>=</mo><mn>13.6</mn><mtext> </mtext><mtext> </mtext><mi>TeV</mi></mrow></math>. To enhance the sensitivity, the results are combined with those from Run 2. An excess of events over the background is observed with a significance of <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mn>3.4</mn><mi>σ</mi></math> (<math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mn>2.5</mn><mi>σ</mi></math> expected). The best-fit signal strength is <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mrow><mi>μ</mi><mo>=</mo><mn>1.4</mn><mo>±</mo><mn>0.4</mn></mrow></math>. This result provides evidence for the <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mrow><mi>H</mi><mo stretchy="false">→</mo><mi>μ</mi><mi>μ</mi></mrow></math> decay with ATLAS data and offers a direct probe of the Higgs-boson Yukawa coupling to second-generation fermions.

Evidence for the Dimuon Decay of the Higgs Boson in <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mi>p</mi><mi>p</mi></math> Collisions with the ATLAS Detector

In the present work, we examine the production of <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><mrow><mi mathvariant="normal">Ξ</mi><mo>(</mo><mn>1530</mn><mo>)</mo></mrow></math> in the <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><mrow><msup><mi>K</mi><mo>−</mo></msup><mi>p</mi><mo>→</mo><msup><mi>K</mi><mo>+</mo></msup><mi mathvariant="normal">Ξ</mi><msup><mrow><mo>(</mo><mn>1530</mn><mo>)</mo></mrow><mo>−</mo></msup></mrow></math> and <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><mrow><msup><mi>K</mi><mo>−</mo></msup><mi>p</mi><mo>→</mo><msup><mi>K</mi><mn>0</mn></msup><mi mathvariant="normal">Ξ</mi><msup><mrow><mo>(</mo><mn>1530</mn><mo>)</mo></mrow><mn>0</mn></msup></mrow></math> reactions utilizing an effective Lagrangian approach. To accurately fit the cross sections for both processes, we include nine <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><mi mathvariant="normal">Λ</mi></math> and <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><mi mathvariant="normal">Σ</mi></math> hyperons and their resonances in both <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><mi>s</mi></math>- and <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><mi>u</mi></math>-channel processes. Considering the discrepancy of the measured cross sections for <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><mrow><msup><mi>K</mi><mo>−</mo></msup><mi>p</mi><mo>→</mo><msup><mi>K</mi><mo>+</mo></msup><mi mathvariant="normal">Ξ</mi><msup><mrow><mo>(</mo><mn>1530</mn><mo>)</mo></mrow><mo>−</mo></msup></mrow></math> within the range <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><mrow><msqrt><mi>s</mi></msqrt><mo>=</mo><mrow><mo>[</mo><mn>2.087</mn><mo>,</mo><mn>2.168</mn><mo>]</mo></mrow><mspace width="4pt"></mspace><mi>GeV</mi></mrow></math>, we employ two distinct fitting strategies: a uniform weighting scheme (Model A) and a different weighting approach (Model B). A comparative analysis suggests that Model A yields a superior global agreement with experimental data compared to Model B. Beyond fitting the cross sections, we also estimate the individual contributions from various intermediate states. Our results reveal that the cross section arising from the <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><mrow><mi mathvariant="normal">Σ</mi><mo>(</mo><mn>1193</mn><mo>)</mo></mrow></math> intermediate process is dominant. Furthermore, we predict different cross sections for <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><mrow><msup><mi>K</mi><mo>−</mo></msup><mi>p</mi><mo>→</mo><msup><mi>K</mi><mo>+</mo></msup><mi mathvariant="normal">Ξ</mi><msup><mrow><mo>(</mo><mn>1530</mn><mo>)</mo></mrow><mo>−</mo></msup></mrow></math> and <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><mrow><msup><mi>K</mi><mo>−</mo></msup><mi>p</mi><mo>→</mo><msup><mi>K</mi><mn>0</mn></msup><mi mathvariant="normal">Ξ</mi><msup><mrow><mo>(</mo><mn>1530</mn><mo>)</mo></mrow><mn>0</mn></msup></mrow></math> at several representative center-of-mass energies, providing testable predictions for forthcoming J-PARC experiments.

And the branching fractions for the decays <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mi>B</mi><mo stretchy="false">→</mo><msup><mi>K</mi><mo>*</mo></msup><mo stretchy="false">[</mo><mo stretchy="false">→</mo><mi>K</mi><mi>ρ</mi><mo stretchy="false">]</mo><mi>h</mi></math> are found to be around half of the corresponding results for the <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mi>B</mi><mo stretchy="false">→</mo><msup><mi>K</mi><mo>*</mo></msup><mo stretchy="false">[</mo><mo stretchy="false">→</mo><msup><mi>K</mi><mo>*</mo></msup><mi>π</mi><mo stretchy="false">]</mo><mi>h</mi></math> channels, mainly due to the phase space difference between the <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mi>K</mi><mi>ρ</mi></math> and <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><msup><mi>K</mi><mo>*</mo></msup><mi>π</mi></math> pairs originating from the intermediate state <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><msup><mi>K</mi><mo>*</mo></msup></math>. Experimental data for the <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><msup><mi>K</mi><mo>*</mo></msup></math> decaying into the final states <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><msup><mi>K</mi><mo>*</mo></msup><mi>π</mi></math> and <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mi>K</mi><mi>ρ</mi></math> in the <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mi>B</mi></math> meson decays is expected to be obtained by the LHCb and Belle-II experiments in the near future.

Inspired by the abundant structure near the threshold of the $$D^{(*)}K^{(*)}/\bar{D}^{(*)}K^{(*)},$$ we estimate the strong decay properties of the $$T_{c\bar{s}1}^{f/a}$$ and $$T_{\bar{c}\bar{s}1}^{f/a}$$ with $$I(J^{P})=0/1(1^{+})$$ in $$DK^{*}$$ and $$\bar{D}K^{*}$$ molecular scenarios in the present paper. By employing the effective Lagrangian approach, the widths of the processes $$T_{c\bar{s}1}^{f}\rightarrow D^{*}K, D_{s}^{*}\eta , DK\pi ,$$ $$T_{c\bar{s}1}^{a}\rightarrow D^{*}K, D_{s}^{*}\pi , DK\pi ,$$ and $$T_{\bar{c}\bar{s}1}^{f/a}\rightarrow \bar{D}^{*}K, \bar{D}K\pi $$ are estimated. Considering the present estimations, we propose to search for $$T_{c\bar{s}1}^{f/a}$$ states in $$D^{*}K$$ and $$D_{s}^{*}\pi /D_{s}^{*}\eta $$ mass invariant spectra. Their ratios may serve as an important test of the molecular scenario.

Strong decays of the $$DK^*$$ and $$\bar{D}K^{*}$$ molecular states

Results from the study of the rare decays $$ {K}^{+}\to {\pi}^{+}\nu \overline{\nu} $$ , $\textit{K}$ → $\textit{π}$ $\textit{μ}$ $\textit{μ}$ and $\textit{K}$ → $\textit{π}$ $\textit{γγ}$ at the NA62 experiment at CERN are interpreted in terms of improved limits for $$ \mathcal{B}\left({K}^{+}\to {\pi}^{+}X\right) $$ and coupling parameters of hidden-sector models, where $\textit{X}$ is a mediator. World-leading limits are achieved for dark photon, dark scalar and axion-like particle models.
