The modeling of coupled-channel effects has become increasingly important due to the availability of highly precise data for a large variety of hadronic (re)scattering processes. The <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mi>K</mi></math>-matrix is a powerful, yet comparatively simple, method to describe scattering amplitudes, including coupled-channel effects, with the aim of interpreting experimental data. Throughout the literature, a range of dispersive and nondispersive <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mi>K</mi></math>-matrix methods are employed. Here, we compare the dispersive and nondispersive formulations in the context of the N/D method. It is shown that the methods are equivalent in the physical region under <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mi>K</mi></math>-matrix reparametrization. Differences away from the physical region are examined. Applications to synthetic data are used to illustrate the effects of model choices concerning form factors and the application of dispersion relations, with the goal of clarifying best practices. We find no clear preference with regard to dispersive modeling. In contrast, we find that interpretational ambiguity of the bare model parameters—and even of the form of the bare model—is endemic, and recommend a thorough sampling of data and model spaces to assess conclusion robustness.

Dispersive and nondispersive <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mi>K</mi></math>-matrix formalisms

A flavor-tagged time-dependent analysis of <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mrow><msup><mrow><mi>B</mi></mrow><mrow><mn>0</mn></mrow></msup><mo stretchy="false">→</mo><msubsup><mrow><mi>K</mi></mrow><mrow><mi mathvariant="normal">S</mi></mrow><mrow><mn>0</mn></mrow></msubsup><msup><mrow><mi>μ</mi></mrow><mrow><mo>+</mo></mrow></msup><msup><mrow><mi>μ</mi></mrow><mrow><mo>−</mo></mrow></msup></mrow></math> decays is performed across the full dimuon mass range excluding the <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mi>J</mi><mo>/</mo><mi>ψ</mi></math> and <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mi>ψ</mi><mo stretchy="false">(</mo><mn>2</mn><mi>S</mi><mo stretchy="false">)</mo></math> resonance regions. The analysis uses proton-proton collision data collected by the LHCb experiment in 2011–2018 at center-of-mass energies of 7, 8, and 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mn>9</mn><mtext> </mtext><mtext> </mtext><msup><mi>fb</mi><mrow><mo>−</mo><mn>1</mn></mrow></msup></math>. The <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mi>C</mi><mi>P</mi></math> violation parameters are determined to be <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mrow><mi>C</mi><mo>=</mo><mo>−</mo><mn>0.13</mn><mo>±</mo><mn>0.32</mn><mo>±</mo><mn>0.04</mn></mrow></math>, <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mrow><mi>S</mi><mo>=</mo><mo>+</mo><mn>0.82</mn><mo>±</mo><mn>0.29</mn><mo>±</mo><mn>0.05</mn></mrow></math>, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. The results are consistent with the standard model prediction. This is the first experimental study of time-dependent <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mi>C</mi><mi>P</mi></math> violation in <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mi>b</mi><mo stretchy="false">→</mo><mi>s</mi><msup><mo>ℓ</mo><mo>+</mo></msup><msup><mo>ℓ</mo><mo>−</mo></msup></math> processes.

First Measurement of Time-Dependent <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mi>C</mi><mi>P</mi></math> Violation in the Flavor-Changing Neutral-Current Decay <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mrow><msup><mrow><mi>B</mi></mrow><mrow><mn>0</mn></mrow></msup><mo stretchy="false">→</mo><msubsup><mrow><mi>K</mi></mrow><mrow><mi>S</mi></mrow><mrow><mn>0</mn></mrow></msubsup><msup><mrow><mi>μ</mi></mrow><mrow><mo>+</mo></mrow></msup><msup><mrow><mi>μ</mi></mrow><mrow><mo>−</mo></mrow></msup></mrow></math>

The collinear and transverse-momentum-dependent jet fragmentation function and the radial profile for <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><msup><mi>B</mi><mo>±</mo></msup></math> mesons in jets are measured. The <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><msup><mi>B</mi><mo>±</mo></msup></math> mesons are reconstructed through the <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mrow><mi>J</mi><mo>/</mo><mi>ψ</mi></mrow><mo stretchy="false">(</mo><mo stretchy="false">→</mo><msup><mi>μ</mi><mo>+</mo></msup><msup><mi>μ</mi><mo>−</mo></msup><mo stretchy="false">)</mo><msup><mi>K</mi><mo>±</mo></msup></math> decay channel using proton-proton collision data collected during 2016–2018 with the LHCb detector at a center-of-mass (c.m.) energy of <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><msqrt><mi>s</mi></msqrt><mo>=</mo><mn>13</mn><mtext> </mtext><mtext> </mtext><mi>TeV</mi></math>, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mn>5.4</mn><mtext> </mtext><mtext> </mtext><msup><mi>fb</mi><mrow><mo>−</mo><mn>1</mn></mrow></msup></math>. The results complement recent measurements of jet fragmentation functions for heavy-flavor hadrons and suggest a growing contribution of gluon fragmentation to <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><msup><mi>B</mi><mo>±</mo></msup></math> mesons as the jet transverse momentum increases.

We study lepton-number-violating interactions at dimension seven in the Standard Model effective field theory that contribute to the meson decays $\textit{B}$ → $\textit{Kνν}$ and $\textit{K}$ → $\textit{πνν}$. Such interactions could washout the baryon asymmetry of the Universe and also contribute to the neutrinoless double beta decay, even though the interactions involve a change in down-type quark flavors. We clarify conditions under which excesses in meson decay rates over the Standard Model predictions can be successfully observed. We also show that, although these interactions contribute to neutrino masses at the two-loop level, the Weinberg operator can be introduced consistently without spoiling the scenario.

Feasibility study of lepton number violation in rare $\textit{B}$ and $\textit{K}$ meson decays

Using $\textit{e}$ $\textit{e}$ collision data at 19 center-of-mass energies ranging from 4$\textit{.}$396 to 4$\textit{.}$951 GeV corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 8$\textit{.}$86 fb collected by the BESIII detector, the process $\textit{e}$ $\textit{e}$ → $\textit{K}$ $\textit{K}$ $\textit{π}$ $\textit{J/ψ}$ + c.c. is observed for the first time, with a statistical significance of 9$\textit{.}$4$\textit{σ}$ summing up all the data samples. Here, c.c. stands for the charge conjugated mode. For this process, the cross section and the upper limit at the 90% confidence level are reported at each of the 19 center-of-mass energies. No statistically significant vector structures are observed in the cross section line shape, nor as intermediate states of combinations of $\textit{Kπ}$, $$ K\overline{K} $$ , $$ K\overline{K}\pi $$ , $\textit{KJ/ψ}$, $\textit{πJ/ψ}$, and $\textit{KπJ/ψ}$ seen at individual energy points or in the combined data sample.
