Charged scalars appear in many motivated extensions beyond the Standard Model. We analyze the constraints on charged scalar pair production via the Drell-Yan process at the Large Hadron Collider and interpret them in terms of weak isospin quantum numbers. Leveraging the experimental limits from existing LHC data and phenomenological recast analyses, we place bounds on the branching ratio of the charged scalar as a function of its mass, electric charge, and isospin. This approach enables us to determine limits on the branching ratios directly from experimental data, without appealing to a specific model. We provide a detailed analysis for singly and doubly charged scalars across various weak isospin scenarios, focusing on decays into leptonic and bosonic final states, and we validate this approach in extended Higgs sectors such as the Higgs triplet model and the Georgi-Machacek model.

Drell-Yan constraints on charged scalars: A weak isospin perspective

We perform a global analysis of Drell–Yan production of charged leptons and dineutrinos, the latter in missing energy plus jet events, in proton–proton collisions within the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT). The combination allows for the removal of flat directions, sharper limits and to probe more couplings than the individual observables, which we show performing a fit to LHC-data. We also find that limits have only mild dependence on lepton flavor patterns; hierarchies in quark flavors are driven by the parton distribution functions. The strongest constraints are on couplings involving the first and second generation quarks, exceeding 10 TeV. Combining flavor and high- $$p_T$$ data, the limits on electroweak and gluon dipole operators can be improved, by up to a factor of three, highlighting once more that a more global approach increases sensitivities significantly. We also estimate the improvements in reach over existing data for the high-luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) by $$\sim 1.5$$ , and future collider options such as the high-energy LHC (HE-LHC) by $$\sim 3$$ and FCC-hh by $$\sim 8$$ . To maximize the new physics reach kinematic cuts and binning needs to be adjusted to each quark-flavor separately.

Renormalization of the next-to-leading-power soft function for the Drell-Yan off-diagonal channel

The forward-backward asymmetry in Drell–Yan production and the effective leptonic electroweak mixing angle are measured in proton-proton collisions at <math altimg='si2.svg'><msqrt><mrow><mi>s</mi></mrow></msqrt><mo linebreak='goodbreak' linebreakstyle='after'>=</mo><mn>13</mn></math> TeV, collected by the CMS experiment and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 <math altimg='si3.svg'><mspace width='0.2em' /><msup><mrow><mtext>fb</mtext></mrow><mrow><mo linebreak='badbreak' linebreakstyle='after'>&#8722;</mo><mn>1</mn></mrow></msup></math>. The measurement uses both dimuon and dielectron events, and is performed as a function of the dilepton mass and rapidity. The unfolded angular coefficient <math altimg='si4.svg'><msub><mrow><mi>A</mi></mrow><mrow><mn>4</mn></mrow></msub></math> is also extracted, as a function of the dilepton mass and rapidity. Using the CT18Z set of parton distribution functions, we obtain <math altimg='si5.svg'><msup><mrow><mi mathvariant='normal'>sin</mi></mrow><mrow><mn>2</mn></mrow></msup><mo>&#8289;</mo><msubsup><mrow><mi>&#952;</mi></mrow><mrow><mtext>eff</mtext></mrow><mrow><mi mathvariant='italic'>&#8467;</mi></mrow></msubsup><mo linebreak='goodbreak' linebreakstyle='after'>=</mo><mn>0.23152</mn><mo>&#177;</mo><mn>0.00031</mn></math>, where the uncertainty includes the experimental and theoretical contributions. The measured value agrees with the standard model fit result to global experimental data. This is the most precise <math altimg='si159.svg'><msup><mrow><mi mathvariant='normal'>sin</mi></mrow><mrow><mn>2</mn></mrow></msup><mo>&#8289;</mo><msubsup><mrow><mi>&#952;</mi></mrow><mrow><mtext>eff</mtext></mrow><mrow><mi mathvariant='italic'>&#8467;</mi></mrow></msubsup></math> measurement at a hadron collider, with a precision comparable to the results obtained at LEP and SLD.

Measurement of the Drell–Yan forward-backward asymmetry and of the effective leptonic weak mixing angle in proton-proton collisions at <math altimg='si1.svg'><msqrt><mrow><mi>s</mi></mrow></msqrt><mo linebreak='goodbreak' linebreakstyle='after'>=</mo><mn>13</mn><mrow><mspace width='0.20em' /><mtext>TeV</mtext></mrow></math>

In this article, we examine the validity range of the Effective Field Theory (EFT) description of high-energy Drell–Yan processes at the LHC. To this purpose, we consider explicit mediators that contribute to these processes in the $\textit{s}$- and $\textit{t}$-channels, comparing their effects in Drell–Yan distributions with the ones obtained by matching onto the corresponding EFT. We determine the conditions for the EFT results to accurately describe these scenarios. In particular, we explore the impact of including dimension-eight $$(d=8)$$ operators in the faster convergence of the EFT series, at the analytical and numerical level, considering contributions to the cross section up to the square of $$d=8$$ EFT operator insertions. Moreover, we discuss the possible implications of clipping LHC data and illustrate results for a specific New-Physics scenario motivated by low-energy flavor data.

On the EFT validity for Drell–Yan tails at the LHC

Modern analyses of experimental data from hadron colliders rely on theory predictions at high orders in perturbation theory and a variety of input settings. Interpolation grids facilitate an almost instant re-evaluation of theory predictions for different input parton distributions functions (PDFs) or scale settings and are thus indispensable in the study of the parton content of the proton. While interpolation grids at next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) exist for some key processes relevant for PDF determinations, a notable exception is the Drell–Yan process that constitutes the production of electroweak gauge bosons at hadron colliders and provides important constraints on the quark content of the proton. To address this gap, we report on a new interface between the parton-level Monte Carlo generator and the interpolation grid library and demonstrate its use for the Drell–Yan process. Accompanying this note, we release Drell–Yan grids covering a wide range of measurements that commonly enter global determinations of PDFs. We use the grids to study accidental cancellation between partonic channels at NNLO and inspect the validity of a $\textit{K}$-factor approximation that was widely employed previously.

Fast interpolation grids for the Drell–Yan process

We compute differential distributions for Drell–Yan processes at the LHC and the Tevatron colliders at next-to-next-to-leading order in perturbative QCD, including fiducial cuts on the decay leptons in the final state. The comparison of predictions obtained with four different codes shows excellent agreement, once linear power corrections from the fiducial cuts are included in those codes that rely on phase-space slicing subtraction schemes. For -boson production we perform a detailed study of the symmetric cuts on the transverse momenta of the decay leptons. Predictions at fixed order in perturbative QCD for those symmetric cuts, typically imposed in experiments, suffer from an instability. We show how this can be remedied by an all-order resummation of the fiducial transverse momentum spectrum, and we comment on the choice of cuts for future experimental analyses.

Status of QCD precision predictions for Drell–Yan rapidity distributions

An analysis is presented based on models of the intrinsic transverse momentum (intrinsic <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><msub><mi>k</mi><mi mathvariant="normal">T</mi></msub></math>) of partons in nucleons by studying the dilepton transverse momentum in Drell-Yan events. Using parameter tuning in event generators and existing data from fixed-target experiments and from hadron colliders, our investigation spans 3 orders of magnitude in center-of-mass energy and 2 orders of magnitude in dilepton invariant mass. The results show an energy-scaling behavior of the intrinsic <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><msub><mi>k</mi><mi mathvariant="normal">T</mi></msub></math> parameters, independent of the dilepton invariant mass at a given center-of-mass energy.

Energy-scaling behavior of intrinsic transverse-momentum parameters in Drell-Yan simulation

Understanding the intrinsic transverse momentum (intrinsic- $$k_\textrm{T}$$ ) of partons within colliding hadrons, typically modeled with a Gaussian distribution characterized by a specific width (the intrinsic- $$k_\textrm{T}$$ width), has been an extremely challenging issue. This difficulty arises because event generators like 8 require an intrinsic- $$k_\textrm{T}$$ width that unexpectedly varies with collision energy, reaching unphysical values at high energies. This paper investigates the underlying physics behind this energy dependence in 8, revealing that it arises from an interplay between two non-perturbative processes: the internal transverse motion of partons and non-perturbative soft gluon emissions. These contributions are most constrained in the production of Drell–Yan pairs with very low transverse momentum, where soft gluon effects become increasingly prominent with rising collision energy-contrary to initial expectations. Through a detailed analysis of the Sudakov form factor and its influence on intrinsic- $$k_\textrm{T}$$ width, we clarify the observed energy scaling behavior in 8, providing insight into a longstanding issue in parton shower modeling.

Interplay of intrinsic motion of partons and soft gluon emissions in Drell–Yan production studied with PYTHIA

Many exotic charmoniumlike mesons have already been discovered experimentally, of which the <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><msub><mi>Z</mi><mi>c</mi></msub></math> mesons with isospin 1 are prominent examples. We investigate <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><msup><mi>J</mi><mrow><mi>P</mi><mi>C</mi></mrow></msup><mo>=</mo><msup><mn>1</mn><mrow><mo>+</mo><mo>±</mo></mrow></msup></math> states with flavor <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mover accent="true"><mi>c</mi><mo stretchy="false">¯</mo></mover><mi>c</mi><mover accent="true"><mi>q</mi><mo stretchy="false">¯</mo></mover><mi>q</mi></math> (<math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mrow><mi>q</mi><mo>=</mo><mi>u</mi></mrow></math>, <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mrow><mi>d</mi></mrow></math>) in isospin 1 using lattice QCD. This is the first study of these mesons employing more than one volume and involving frames with nonzero total momentum. We utilize two <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><msub><mi>N</mi><mi>f</mi></msub><mo>=</mo><mn>2</mn><mo>+</mo><mn>1</mn></math> CLS ensembles with <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mrow><msub><mrow><mi>m</mi></mrow><mrow><mi>π</mi></mrow></msub><mo>≃</mo><mn>280</mn><mtext> </mtext><mtext> </mtext><mi>MeV</mi></mrow></math>. The simulations are performed with unphysical light quark masses at a single lattice spacing of <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mrow><mi>a</mi><mo>≃</mo><mn>0.086</mn><mtext> </mtext><mtext> </mtext><mrow><mi>fm</mi></mrow></mrow></math> and omit <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mi>ψ</mi><mo stretchy="false">(</mo><mn>2</mn><mi>S</mi><mo stretchy="false">)</mo><mi>π</mi></math>, <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mi>ψ</mi><mo stretchy="false">(</mo><mn>3770</mn><mo stretchy="false">)</mo><mi>π</mi></math> and three-particle decay channels, so our results provide only qualitative insights. Resulting eigenenergies are compatible or just slightly shifted down with respect to noninteracting energies, where the most significant shifts occur for certain <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mi>D</mi><msup><mover accent="true"><mi>D</mi><mo stretchy="false">¯</mo></mover><mo>*</mo></msup></math> states. Both channels <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><msup><mn>1</mn><mrow><mo>+</mo><mo>±</mo></mrow></msup></math> have a virtual pole slightly below the threshold if <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mi>D</mi><msup><mover accent="true"><mi>D</mi><mo stretchy="false">¯</mo></mover><mo>*</mo></msup></math> is assumed to be decoupled from other channels. In addition, we perform a coupled channel analysis of <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mi>J</mi><mo>/</mo><mi>ψ</mi><mi>π</mi></math> and <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mi>D</mi><msup><mover accent="true"><mi>D</mi><mo stretchy="false">¯</mo></mover><mo>*</mo></msup></math> scattering with <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><msup><mi>J</mi><mrow><mi>P</mi><mi>C</mi></mrow></msup><mo>=</mo><msup><mn>1</mn><mrow><mo>+</mo><mo>−</mo></mrow></msup></math> within an effective field theory framework. The <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mi>J</mi><mo>/</mo><mi>ψ</mi><mi>π</mi></math> and <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mi>D</mi><msup><mover accent="true"><mi>D</mi><mo stretchy="false">¯</mo></mover><mo>*</mo></msup></math> invariant-mass distributions from BESIII and finite-volume energies from several lattice QCD simulations, including this work, are fitted simultaneously. All fits yield two poles relatively close to the <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mi>D</mi><msup><mover accent="true"><mi>D</mi><mo stretchy="false">¯</mo></mover><mo>*</mo></msup></math> threshold and reasonably reproduce the experimental <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><msub><mi>Z</mi><mi>c</mi></msub></math> peaks. They also reproduce lattice energies up to slightly above the <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mi>D</mi><msup><mover accent="true"><mi>D</mi><mo stretchy="false">¯</mo></mover><mo>*</mo></msup></math> threshold, while reproduction at even higher energies is better for fits that put more weight on the lattice data. Our findings suggest that the employed effective field theory can reasonably reconcile the peaks in the experimental line shapes and the lattice energies, although those lie close to noninteracting energies. We also study <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mi>J</mi><mo>/</mo><mi>ψ</mi><mi>π</mi></math> scattering in s wave and place upper bounds on the phase shift.
