Spectral densities encode nonperturbative information that enters the calculation of a plethora of physical observables in strongly coupled field theories. Phenomenological applications encompass aspects of standard-model hadronic physics, observable at current colliders, as well as correlation functions characterizing new physics proposals, testable in future experiments. By making use of numerical data produced in a <math><mi>S</mi><mi>p</mi><mo>(</mo><mn>4</mn><mo>)</mo></math> lattice gauge theory with matter transforming in an admixture of fundamental and 2-index antisymmetric representations of the gauge group, we perform a systematic study to demonstrate the effectiveness of recent technological progress in the reconstruction of spectral densities.To this purpose, we write and test new software packages that use energy-smeared spectral densities to analyze the mass spectrum of mesons. We assess the effectiveness of different smearing kernels and optimize the smearing parameters to the characteristics of available lattice ensembles. For concreteness, we analyze the <math><mi>S</mi><mi>p</mi><mo>(</mo><mn>4</mn><mo>)</mo></math> lattice gauge theory with matter transforming in an admixture of fundamental and 2-index antisymmetric representations of the gauge group. We generate new ensembles for the theory in consideration, with lattices that have a longer extent in the time direction with respect to the spatial ones. We run our tests on these ensembles, obtaining new results about the spectrum of light mesons and their excitations. We make available our algorithm and software for the extraction of spectral densities, that can be applied to theories with other gauge groups, including the theory of strong interactions (QCD) governing hadronic physics in the standard model.

Meson spectroscopy from spectral densities in lattice gauge theories

We extend the existing leading (LO), next-to-leading (NLO), and next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) NNPDF4.0 sets of parton distribution functions (PDFs) to approximate next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order ( $$\hbox {aN}^3\hbox {LO}$$  <math> <mrow> <msup> <mtext>aN</mtext> <mn>3</mn> </msup> <mtext>LO</mtext> </mrow> </math>  ). We construct an approximation to the  $$\hbox {N}^3\hbox {LO}$$  <math> <mrow> <msup> <mtext>N</mtext> <mn>3</mn> </msup> <mtext>LO</mtext> </mrow> </math>   splitting functions that includes all available partial information from both fixed-order computations and from small and large x resummation, and estimate the uncertainty on this approximation by varying the set of basis functions used to construct the approximation. We include known  $$\hbox {N}^3\hbox {LO}$$  <math> <mrow> <msup> <mtext>N</mtext> <mn>3</mn> </msup> <mtext>LO</mtext> </mrow> </math>   corrections to deep-inelastic scattering structure functions and extend the FONLL general-mass scheme to  $$\mathcal {O}\left( \alpha _s^3\right) $$  <math> <mrow> <mi>O</mi> <mfenced> <msubsup> <mi>α</mi> <mi>s</mi> <mn>3</mn> </msubsup> </mfenced> </mrow> </math>   accuracy. We determine a set of  $$\hbox {aN}^3\hbox {LO}$$  <math> <mrow> <msup> <mtext>aN</mtext> <mn>3</mn> </msup> <mtext>LO</mtext> </mrow> </math>   PDFs by accounting both for the uncertainty on splitting functions due to the incomplete knowledge of  $$\hbox {N}^3\hbox {LO}$$  <math> <mrow> <msup> <mtext>N</mtext> <mn>3</mn> </msup> <mtext>LO</mtext> </mrow> </math>   terms, and to the uncertainty related to missing higher corrections (MHOU), estimated by scale variation, through a theory covariance matrix formalism. We assess the perturbative stability of the resulting PDFs, we study the impact of MHOUs on them, and we compare our results to the  $$\hbox {aN}^3\hbox {LO}$$  <math> <mrow> <msup> <mtext>aN</mtext> <mn>3</mn> </msup> <mtext>LO</mtext> </mrow> </math>   PDFs from the MSHT group. We examine the phenomenological impact of  $$\hbox {aN}^3\hbox {LO}$$  <math> <mrow> <msup> <mtext>aN</mtext> <mn>3</mn> </msup> <mtext>LO</mtext> </mrow> </math>   corrections on parton luminosities at the LHC, and give a first assessment of the impact of  $$\hbox {aN}^3\hbox {LO}$$  <math> <mrow> <msup> <mtext>aN</mtext> <mn>3</mn> </msup> <mtext>LO</mtext> </mrow> </math>   PDFs on the Higgs and Drell–Yan total production cross-sections. We find that the  $$\hbox {aN}^3\hbox {LO}$$  <math> <mrow> <msup> <mtext>aN</mtext> <mn>3</mn> </msup> <mtext>LO</mtext> </mrow> </math>   NNPDF4.0 PDFs are consistent within uncertainties with their NNLO counterparts, that they improve the description of the global dataset and the perturbative convergence of Higgs and Drell–Yan cross-sections, and that MHOUs on PDFs decrease substantially with the increase of perturbative order.

The path to  $$\hbox {N}^3\hbox {LO}$$  <math> <mrow> <msup> <mtext>N</mtext> <mn>3</mn> </msup> <mtext>LO</mtext> </mrow> </math>   parton distributions

We construct a set of parton distribution functions (PDFs), based on the recent NNPDF4.0 PDF set, that also include a photon PDF. The photon PDF is constructed using the LuxQED formalism, while QED evolution accounting for  $${\mathcal {O}}\left( \alpha \right) $$  <math> <mrow> <mi>O</mi> <mfenced> <mi>α</mi> </mfenced> </mrow> </math>  ,  $${\mathcal {O}}\left( \alpha \alpha _s\right) $$  <math> <mrow> <mi>O</mi> <mfenced> <mi>α</mi> <msub> <mi>α</mi> <mi>s</mi> </msub> </mfenced> </mrow> </math>  , and  $${\mathcal {O}}\left( \alpha ^2\right) $$  <math> <mrow> <mi>O</mi> <mfenced> <msup> <mi>α</mi> <mn>2</mn> </msup> </mfenced> </mrow> </math>   corrections is implemented and benchmarked by means of the EKO code. We investigate the impact of QED effects on NNPDF4.0, and compare our results both to our previous NNPDF3.1QED PDF set and to other recent PDF sets that include the photon. We assess the impact of photon-initiated processes and electroweak corrections on a variety of representative LHC processes, and find that they can reach the 5% level in vector boson pair production at large invariant mass.

Photons in the proton: implications for the LHC

We include uncertainties due to missing higher order corrections to QCD computations (MHOU) used in the determination of parton distributions (PDFs) in the recent NNPDF4.0 set of PDFs. We use our previously published methodology, based on the treatment of MHOUs and their full correlations through a theory covariance matrix determined by scale variation, now fully incorporated in the new NNPDF theory pipeline. We assess the impact of the inclusion of MHOUs on the NNPDF4.0 central values and uncertainties, and specifically show that they lead to improved consistency of the PDF determination. PDF uncertainties on physical predictions in the data region are consequently either unchanged or moderately reduced by the inclusion of MHOUs.

Determination of the theory uncertainties from missing higher orders on NNLO parton distributions with percent accuracy

Symplectic gauge theories coupled to matter fields lead to symmetry enhancement phenomena that have potential applications in such diverse contexts as composite Higgs, top partial compositeness, strongly interacting dark matter, and dilaton-Higgs models. These theories are also interesting on theoretical grounds, for example in reference to the approach to the large-<math><mrow><mi>N</mi></mrow></math> limit. A particularly compelling research aim is the determination of the extent of the conformal window in gauge theories with symplectic groups coupled to matter, for different groups and for field content consisting of fermions transforming in different representations. Such determination would have far-reaching implications, but requires overcoming huge technical challenges. Numerical studies based on lattice field theory can provide the quantitative information necessary to this endeavor. We developed new software to implement symplectic groups in the Monte Carlo algorithms within the Grid framework. In this paper, we focus most of our attention on the <math><mi>S</mi><mi>p</mi><mo>(</mo><mn>4</mn><mo>)</mo></math> lattice gauge theory coupled to four (Wilson-Dirac) fermions transforming in the 2-index antisymmetric representation, as a case study. We discuss an extensive catalog of technical tests of the algorithms and present preliminary measurements to set the stage for future large-scale numerical investigations. We also include the scan of parameter space of all asymptotically free <math><mi>S</mi><mi>p</mi><mo>(</mo><mn>4</mn><mo>)</mo></math> lattice gauge theories coupled to varying number of fermions transforming in the antisymmetric representation.

Symplectic lattice gauge theories in the grid framework: Approaching the conformal window

We present a lattice study of the SU(4) gauge theory with two Dirac fermions in the fundamental and two in the two-index antisymmetric representation, a model close to a theory of partial compositeness proposed by G. Ferretti. Focus of this work are the methodologies behind the computation of the spectrum and the extrapolation of the chiral point for a theory with matter in multiple representations. While being still technical, this study provides important steps towards a non-perturbative understanding of the spectrum of theories of partial compositeness, which present a richer dynamics compared to single-representation theories. The multi-representation features are studied first in perturbation theory, and then non-perturbatively by adopting a dual outlook on lattice data through a joint analysis of time-momentum correlation functions and smeared spectral densities.

Multi-representation dynamics of SU(4) composite Higgs models: chiral limit and spectral reconstructions

Abstract We discuss spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking and the quark bilinear condensate in large-N$_{c}$ quantum chromodynamics (QCD). It is known that the existence of the η′ meson is implied in large-N$_{c}$ QCD, as pointed out by Witten[27] and Veneziano[28]. First, we show that the existence of η′ and the Ward–Takahashi identities implies the existence of Nambu–Goldstone bosons from chiral symmetry breaking SU(N$_{f}$)$_{L}$ × SU(N$_{f}$)$_{R}$ → SU(N$_{f}$)$_{V}$. Second, we show that a QCD inequality implies a non-zero lower bound on the quark bilinear condensate.

Chiral symmetry breaking and the quark bilinear condensate in large- Qcd La Rivista del Nuovo Cimento Quarks and strings on a lattice

We present a new set of parton distribution functions (PDFs) based on a fully global dataset and machine learning techniques: NNPDF4.0. We expand the NNPDF3.1 determination with 44 new datasets, mostly from the LHC. We derive a novel methodology through hyperparameter optimization, leading to an efficient fitting algorithm built upon stochastic gradient descent. We use NNLO QCD calculations and account for NLO electroweak corrections and nuclear uncertainties. Theoretical improvements in the PDF description include a systematic implementation of positivity constraints and integrability of sum rules. We validate our methodology by means of closure tests and “future tests” (i.e. tests of backward and forward data compatibility), and assess its stability, specifically upon changes of PDF parametrization basis. We study the internal compatibility of our dataset, and investigate the dependence of results both upon the choice of input dataset and of fitting methodology. We perform a first study of the phenomenological implications of NNPDF4.0 on representative LHC processes. The software framework used to produce NNPDF4.0 is made available as an open-source package together with documentation and examples.

The path to proton structure at 1% accuracy

General-purpose Markov chain Monte Carlo sampling algorithms suffer from a dramatic reduction in efficiency as the system being studied is driven toward a critical point through, for example, taking the continuum limit. Recently, a series of seminal studies suggested that normalizing flows—a class of deep generative models—can form the basis of a sampling strategy that does not suffer from this “critical slowing down.” The central idea is to use machine learning techniques to build (approximate) trivializing maps, i.e., field transformations that map the theory of interest into a “simpler” theory in which the degrees of freedom decouple. These trivializing maps provide a representation of the theory in which all its nontrivial aspects are encoded within an invertible transformation to a set of field variables whose statistical weight in the path integral is given by a distribution from which sampling is easy. No separate process is required to generate training data for such models, and convergence to the desired distribution is guaranteed through a reweighting procedure such as a Metropolis test. From a theoretical perspective, this approach has the potential to become more efficient than traditional sampling since the statistical efficiency of the sampling algorithm is decoupled from the correlation length of the system. The caveat to all of this is that, somehow, the costs associated with the highly nontrivial task of sampling from the path integral of an interacting field theory are transferred to the training of a model to perform this transformation. In a proof-of-principle demonstration on two-dimensional <math><msup><mi>ϕ</mi><mn>4</mn></msup></math> theory, Albergo, Kanwar, and Shanahan [Phys. Rev. D 100, 034515 (2019)] modeled the trivializing map as a sequence of pointwise affine transformations. We pick up this thread, with the aim of quantifying how well we can expect this approach to scale as we increase the number of degrees of freedom in the system. We make several modifications to the original design that allow our models to learn more efficient representations of trivializing maps using much smaller neural networks, which leads to a large reduction in the computational cost required to train models of equivalent quality. After making these changes, we find that sampling efficiency is almost entirely dictated by how extensively a model has been trained while being unresponsive to further alterations that increase model flexibility. However, as we move toward the continuum limit the training costs scale extremely quickly, which urgently requires further work to fully understand and mitigate.

Efficient modeling of trivializing maps for lattice <math><msup><mi>ϕ</mi><mn>4</mn></msup></math> theory using normalizing flows: A first look at scalability

We present the software framework underlying the NNPDF4.0 global determination of parton distribution functions (PDFs). The code is released under an open source licence and is accompanied by extensive documentation and examples. The code base is composed by a PDF fitting package, tools to handle experimental data and to efficiently compare it to theoretical predictions, and a versatile analysis framework. In addition to ensuring the reproducibility of the NNPDF4.0 (and subsequent) determination, the public release of the NNPDF fitting framework enables a number of phenomenological applications and the production of PDF fits under user-defined data and theory assumptions.
