We study the free energy of integrable, asymptotically free field theories in two dimensions coupled to a conserved charge. We develop methods to obtain analytic expressions for its trans-series expansion, directly from the Bethe ansatz equations, and we use this result to determine the structure of its Borel singularities. We find a new class of infrared renormalons which does not fit the traditional expectations of renormalon physics proposed long ago by ’t Hooft and Parisi. We check the existence of these new singularities with detailed calculations based on the resurgent analysis of the perturbative expansion. Our results show that the structure of renormalons in asymptotically free theories is more subtle than previously thought, and that large N estimates of their location might be misleading.

New renormalons from analytic trans-series

In theories with renormalons the perturbative series is factorially divergent even after restricting to a given order in 1/N, making the 1/N expansion a natural testing ground for the theory of resurgence. We study in detail the interplay between resurgent properties and the 1/N expansion in various integrable field theories with renormalons. We focus on the free energy in the presence of a chemical potential coupled to a conserved charge, which can be computed exactly with the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz (TBA). In some examples, like the first 1/N correction to the free energy in the non-linear sigma model, the terms in the 1/N expansion can be fully decoded in terms of a resurgent trans-series in the coupling constant. In the principal chiral field we find a new, explicit solution for the large N free energy which can be written as the median resummation of a trans-series with infinitely many, analytically computable IR renormalon corrections. However, in other examples, like the Gross-Neveu model, each term in the 1/N expansion includes non-perturbative corrections which can not be predicted by a resurgent analysis of the corresponding perturbative series. We also study the properties of the series in 1/N. In the Gross-Neveu model, where this is convergent, we analytically continue the series beyond its radius of convergence and show how the continuation matches with known dualities with sine-Gordon theories.

Resurgence and 1/N Expansion in Integrable Field Theories

According to standard lore, perturbative series of super-renormalizable theories have only instanton singularities. In this paper we show that two-dimensional scalar theories with a spontaneously broken O(N ) symmetry at the classical level, which are super-renormalizable, have an IR renormalon singularity at large N . Since perturbative expansions in these theories are made around the “false vacuum” in which the global symmetry is broken, this singularity can be regarded as a manifestation of the non-perturbative absence of Goldstone bosons. We conjecture that the Borel singularity in the ground state energy of the Lieb-Liniger model is a non-relativistic manifestation of this phenomenon. We also provide en passant a detailed perturbative calculation of the Lieb-Liniger energy up to two-loops, and we check that it agrees with the prediction of the Bethe ansatz.

A new renormalon in two dimensions

We study various non-perturbative approaches to the quantization of the Seiberg-Witten curve of   <math> <mi>N</mi> </math>  $$ \mathcal{N} $$  = 2, SU(2) super Yang-Mills theory, which is closely related to the modified Mathieu operator. The first approach is based on the quantum WKB periods and their resurgent properties. We show that these properties are encoded in the TBA equations of Gaiotto-Moore-Neitzke determined by the BPS spectrum of the theory, and we relate the Borel-resummed quantum periods to instanton calculus. In addition, we use the TS/ST correspondence to obtain a closed formula for the Fredholm determinant of the modified Mathieu operator. Finally, by using blowup equations, we explain the connection between this operator and the τ function of Painlevé III.

Non-perturbative approaches to the quantum Seiberg-Witten curve

In integrable field theories in two dimensions, the Bethe ansatz can be used to compute exactly the ground state energy in the presence of an external field coupled to a conserved charge. We generalize previous results by Volin and we extract analytic results for the perturbative expansion of this observable, up to very high order, in various asymptotically free theories: the non-linear sigma model and its supersymmetric extension, the Gross-Neveu model, and the principal chiral field. We study the large order behavior of these perturbative series and we give strong evidence that, as expected, it is controlled by renormalons. Our analysis is sensitive to the next-to-leading correction to the asymptotics, which involves the first two coefficients of the beta function. We also show that, in the supersymmetric non-linear sigma model, there is no contribution from the first IR renormalon, in agreement with general arguments.

Renormalons in integrable field theories

In the correspondence between spectral problems and topological strings, it is natural to consider complex values for the string theory moduli. In the spectral theory side, this corresponds to non-Hermitian quantum curves with complex spectra and resonances, and in some cases, to PT-symmetric spectral problems. The correspondence leads to precise predictions about the spectral properties of these non-Hermitian operators. In this paper we develop techniques to compute the complex spectra of these quantum curves, providing in this way precision tests of these predictions. In addition, we analyze quantum Seiberg-Witten curves with PT symmetry, which provide interesting and exactly solvable examples of spontaneous PT-symmetry breaking.

Resonances and PT symmetry in quantum curves

Topological strings on toric Calabi-Yau threefolds can be defined non-perturbatively in terms of a non-interacting Fermi gas of N particles. Using this approach, we propose a definition of quantum mirror curves as quantum distributions on phase space. The quantum distribution is obtained as the Wigner transform of the reduced density matrix of the Fermi gas. We show that the classical mirror geometry emerges in the strongly coupled, large N limit in which ℏ ∼ N. In this limit, the Fermi gas has effectively zero temperature, and the Wigner distribution becomes sharply supported on the interior of the classical mirror curve. The quantum fluctuations around the classical limit turn out to be captured by an improved version of the universal scaling form of Balazs and Zipfel.

Quantum curves as quantum distributions

It has been recently conjectured that the exact eigenfunctions of quantum mirror curves can be obtained by combining their WKB expansion with the open topological string wavefunction. In this paper we give further evidence for this conjecture. We present closed expressions for the wavefunctions in the so-called maximally supersymmetric case, in various geometries. In the higher genus case, our conjecture provides a solution to the quantum Baxter equation of the corresponding cluster integrable system, and we argue that the quantization conditions of the integrable system follow from imposing appropriate asymptotic conditions on the wavefunction. We also present checks of the conjecture for general values of the Planck constant.

Wavefunctions, integrability, and open strings

We derive a system of TBA equations governing the exact WKB periods in one-dimensional Quantum Mechanics with arbitrary polynomial potentials. These equations provide a generalization of the ODE/IM correspondence, and they can be regarded as the solution of a Riemann-Hilbert problem in resurgent Quantum Mechanics formulated by Voros. Our derivation builds upon the solution of similar Riemann-Hilbert problems in the study of BPS spectra in   <math> <mi>N</mi> </math>  $$ \mathcal{N} $$  = 2 gauge theories and of minimal surfaces in AdS. We also show that our TBA equations, combined with exact quantization conditions, provide a powerful method to solve spectral problems in Quantum Mechanics. We illustrate our general analysis with a detailed study of PT-symmetric cubic oscillators and quartic oscillators.

TBA equations and resurgent Quantum Mechanics

We perform further tests of the correspondence between spectral theory and topological strings, focusing on mirror curves of genus greater than one with nontrivial mass parameters. In particular, we analyze the geometry relevant to the SU(3) relativistic Toda lattice, and the resolved ℂ 3 / ℤ 6 $$ {\mathbb{C}}^{{}^3}/{\mathbb{Z}}_6 $$ orbifold. Furthermore, we give evidence that the correspondence holds for arbitrary values of the mass parameters, where the quantization problem leads to resonant states. We also explore the relation between this correspondence and cluster integrable systems.
