Near horizon geometries of D$\textit{p}$-branes with $\textit{p}$ ≠ 3 are singular with a running dilaton. Bound states of D$\textit{p}$ branes with their magnetic cousins, D(6 − $\textit{p}$) branes, can stabilise the dilaton such that an AdS factor might appear in the near horizon region, potentially leading to a chain of AdS vacua of the form $\textit{AdS}$ × $\textit{S}$ × 𝕋 . The solutions with $\textit{p}$ = −1, 1, 3 are supersymmetric with the cases $\textit{p}$ = 1, 3 being well-known examples already. We construct explicit (partially smeared) brane bound state solutions for all such configurations. The D2-D4 and D(−1)-D7 cases are entirely novel, but they do not have a near-horizon AdS geometry. The two novel classes of solutions feature ghost branes (negative tension branes), and we suggest they are physical for the D(−1)-D7 solutions but unphysical for the D2-D4 solutions. The bound state of a D(−1) and a D7 brane in supergravity was only hinted upon recently in [1]. We correct the solution here in order to preserve supersymmetry, and find that the dilaton can indeed be stabilized. This points to a possible dual matrix theory, generalizing the IKKT matrix model to allow for conformal invariance.

Supergravity solutions for D$\textit{p}$-D(6 $\textit{− p}$) bound states: from $\textit{p}$ = 7 to $\textit{p}$ = $\textit{−}$1

We consider the static planar black hole solutions in the STU model of the gauged $$ \mathcal{N} $$ = 8 supergravity in four dimensions. We give a straightforward derivation of the equation of state of the purely electric and purely magnetic solutions with four charges. Then we give a simple proof that the determinant of the Hessian of the energy is always negative below some critical finite temperature for the purely electric solutions. We compute the spinodal line for the usual planar Reissner-Nordström solution in four dimensions. Inspired by the magnetic superalgebra we show that the supersymmetric solutions are metastable if the energy is restricted to satisfy the topological twist condition ab initio and it is shifted to be zero on the BPS solutions.

The instability of low-temperature black holes in gauged

<p>Fetching techniques from generalized geometry and exceptional field theory, we develop a new method to identify consistent subsectors of four-dimensional gauged maximal supergravities that possess a (locally) geometric embedding in type IIB or 11D supergravity. We show that a subsector that is invariant under a structure group <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mrow><msub><mrow><mi mathvariant="normal">G</mi></mrow><mrow><mi mathvariant="normal">S</mi></mrow></msub><mo>⊂</mo><msub><mrow><mi mathvariant="normal">E</mi></mrow><mrow><mn>7</mn><mo stretchy="false">(</mo><mn>7</mn><mo stretchy="false">)</mo></mrow></msub></mrow></math> can define a consistent truncation, even when <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><msub><mi mathvariant="normal">G</mi><mi mathvariant="normal">S</mi></msub></math> is not part of the symmetry of the gauged maximal supergravity. As an illustration of the method, type IIB supergravity on <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><msup><mi mathvariant="normal">S</mi><mn>1</mn></msup><mo>×</mo><msup><mi mathvariant="normal">S</mi><mn>5</mn></msup></math> is shown to admit a consistent truncation to pure <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mi mathvariant="script">N</mi><mo>=</mo><mn>4</mn></math>, <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mi>D</mi><mo>=</mo><mn>4</mn></math> gauged supergravity. Explicit uplift formulae are presented which provide a type IIB alternative to the M-theory embedding constructed by Cvetic, Lu, and Pope 25 years ago.</p>

We construct the universal AdS4 black hole that asymptotes to the (φ, χ)-family of type IIB S-fold backgrounds dual to the conformal manifold of   <math> <mi>N</mi> </math>  $$ \mathcal{N} $$  = 2 S-fold CFT’s. We present the explicit type IIB embedding of such a universal black hole for two particular asymptotics: the   <math> <mi>N</mi> </math>  $$ \mathcal{N} $$  = 2 S-fold with U(2) symmetry at (φ, χ) = (0, 0) and the   <math> <mi>N</mi> </math>  $$ \mathcal{N} $$  = 4 S-fold with SO(4) symmetry at (φ, χ) = (1, 0). As a byproduct, we also present a novel two-parameter family of AdS2 × M8 supersymmetric S-fold backgrounds with M8 = ℍ 2 × S5 × S1 that features a parametrically-controlled scale separation involving some of the internal directions.

In this Letter, we construct a supersymmetric model, obtained by deforming <math><mrow><mi>N</mi><mo>=</mo><mn>2</mn></mrow></math> anti–de Sitter <math><mrow><mi>D</mi><mo>=</mo><mn>3</mn></mrow></math> supergravity through a chiral vector component of the torsion. Supersymmetric States in Anti–de Sitter <math><mrow><mi>D</mi><mo>=</mo><mn>3</mn></mrow></math> Supergravity with Chiral Torsion

The uncharged AdS$_{4}$ soliton has been recently shown to be continuously connected to a magnetic, supersymmetric AdS$_{4}$ soliton within <math><mi>N</mi><mo>=</mo><mn>8</mn></math> gauged supergravity. By constructing the asymptotic superalgebra, we establish a positive energy theorem for the magnetic AdS$_{4}$ solitons admitting well-defined asymptotic Killing spinors, antiperiodic on a contractible <math><msup><mrow><mi>S</mi></mrow><mrow><mn>1</mn></mrow></msup></math>. We show that there exists only one discrete solution endowed with these boundary conditions satisfying the bound, the latter being saturated by the null energy supersymmetric configuration. Despite having negative energy, the uncharged AdS$_{4}$ soliton does not contradict the positive energy theorem, as it does not admit well-defined asymptotic Killing spinors.

A positive energy theorem for AdS solitons

We consider soliton solutions in AdS4 with a flat slicing and Wilson loops around one cycle. We study the phase structure and find the ground state and identify supersymmetric solutions as a function of the Wilson loops. We work in the context of a scalar field truncation of gauged   <math> <mi>N</mi> </math>  $$ \mathcal{N} $$  = 8 supergravity, where all the dilatons are equal and all the axions vanish in the STU model. In this theory, we construct new soliton solutions parameterized by two Wilson lines. We find that there is a degeneracy of supersymmetric solutions. We also show that, for alternate boundary conditions, there exists a non-supersymmetric soliton solution with energy lower than the supersymmetric one.

Supersymmetric solitons in gauged   <math> <mi>N</mi> </math>  $$ \mathcal{N} $$  = 8 supergravity

We analyze the vacuum structure of <math><mi>N</mi><mo>=</mo><mn>3</mn><mo>,</mo><mi>D</mi><mo>=</mo><mn>4</mn></math> supergravity coupled to 9 vector multiplets with gauge group <math><mrow><mi>SO</mi></mrow><mo>(</mo><mn>3</mn><mo>)</mo><mo>×</mo><mrow><mi>SU</mi></mrow><mo>(</mo><mn>3</mn><mo>)</mo></math>. Aside from the central <math><mi>N</mi><mo>=</mo><mn>3</mn></math> <math><mrow><msub><mrow><mi>AdS</mi></mrow><mrow><mn>4</mn></mrow></msub></mrow></math> vacuum at the origin, on which the supermultiplet structure reproduces the massless sector of M theory compactified on <math><msup><mi>N</mi><mrow><mn>0</mn><mo>,</mo><mn>1</mn><mo>,</mo><mn>0</mn></mrow></msup></math>, we find a rich structure of <math><mrow><msub><mrow><mi>AdS</mi></mrow><mrow><mn>4</mn></mrow></msub></mrow></math> vacua preserving <math><mi>N</mi><mo>=</mo><mn>0</mn></math>, 1, 2, 3 supersymmetry. These new vacua are arranged in a manifold spanned by scalar fields corresponding to exactly marginal deformations of the dual CFT. This manifold has the form <math><msup><mi>T</mi><mn>3</mn></msup><mo>/</mo><mi>K</mi></math>, where <math><mi>K</mi></math> is a discrete subgroup of the gauge group: <math><mi>N</mi><mo>=</mo><mn>3</mn></math>, 2, and 1 vacua correspond, respectively, to a point, a line and a surface in the three-dimensional vacuum manifold. We study RG flows from the central <math><mi>N</mi><mo>=</mo><mn>3</mn></math> vacuum and elaborate on the possible higher dimensional origin of the new vacua. For the reader’s convenience we also provide a review of the embedding tensor formulation of <math><mi>D</mi><mo>=</mo><mn>4</mn><mo>,</mo><mi>N</mi><mo>=</mo><mn>3</mn></math> gauged supergravities. In particular, we provide formulas involving the fermion shift tensors and mass matrices in <math><mi>N</mi><mo>=</mo><mn>3</mn></math> theories, which can be applied to a generic gauging.

Gauged <math><mrow><mi>N</mi><mo>=</mo><mn>3</mn></mrow></math>, <math><mrow><mi>D</mi><mo>=</mo><mn>4</mn></mrow></math> supergravity: A new web of marginally connected vacua

We provide the first holographic evidence for the existence of a nonsupersymmetric conformal manifold arising from exactly marginal but supersymmetry-breaking deformations of a superconformal three-dimensional field theory. In particular, we construct a 2-parameter nonsupersymmetric deformation of a supersymmetric AdS nongeometric background in type IIB string theory. We prove that the nonsupersymmetric backgrounds are perturbatively stable and also do not suffer from various nonperturbative instabilities. Finally, we argue that diffeomorphism symmetry protects our solutions against higher-derivative string corrections.

Holographic evidence for nonsupersymmetric conformal manifolds

In this paper we prove that the four-dimensional hyperbolic supersymmetric black holes can be unstable in the canonical ensemble. To this end, we work with an infinite class of   <math> <mi>N</mi> </math>  $$ \mathcal{N} $$  = 2 supergravity theories interpolating between all the single dilaton truncations of the SO(8) gauged   <math> <mi>N</mi> </math>  $$ \mathcal{N} $$  = 8 supergravity. Within these models, we study electrically charged solutions of two different kinds: supersymmetric hairy and extremal non-supersymmetric Reissner-Nordström black holes. We consider these solutions within the same canonical ensemble and show that, for suitable choices of the parameters defining the   <math> <mi>N</mi> </math>  $$ \mathcal{N} $$  = 2 model, the supersymmetric solution features a higher free energy than the non-supersymmetric one. In the absence of additional selection rules, this would imply an instability of the supersymmetric configuration, hinting towards a possible supersymmetry breaking mechanism.
