Big bang/big crunch closed universes can be realized in AdS/CFT, even though they lack asymptotically AdS boundaries. With enough bulk entanglement, the bulk Hilbert space of a closed universe can be holographically encoded in the CFT. We clarify the relation of this encoding to observer-clone proposals and refute recent arguments about the breakdown of semiclassical physics in such spaces. In the limit of no bulk entanglement, the holographic encoding breaks down. The oft-cited one-dimensional nature of the closed universe Hilbert space represents the limitation of the external (CFT) Hilbert space to access the quantum information in the closed universe, similar to the limitations imposed on observers outside a perfectly isolated quantum lab. We advocate that the CFT nevertheless continues to determine the physical properties of the closed universe in this regime, showing how to interpret this relationship in terms of a final state projection in the closed universe. We provide a dictionary between the final state wavefunction and CFT data. We propose a model of the emergence of an arrow of time in the universe with a given initial or final state projection. Finally, we show that the conventional EFT in the closed universe, without any projection, can be recovered as a maximally ignorant description of the final state. This conventional EFT is encoded in CFT data, and it can be probed by computing coarse-grained observables. We provide an example of one such observable. Taken together, these results amount to a clean bill of health for baby universes born of AdS/CFT.

The baby universe is fine and the CFT knows it: on holography for closed universes

What do the typical entangled states of two black holes look like? Do they contain semiclassical interiors? We approach these questions constructively, providing ensembles of states that densely explore the black hole Hilbert space. The states contain very long Einstein-Rosen caterpillars: semiclassical wormholes with large numbers of matter inhomogeneities. Distinguishing these ensembles from the typical entangled states of the black holes is hard. We quantify this by deriving the correspondence between a microscopic notion of quantum randomness and the geometric length of the wormhole. This formalizes a “complexity <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mrow><mo>=</mo></mrow></math> geometry” relation.

Semiclassical Wormholes toward Typical Entangled States

We present analytical expressions for the transverse momentum dependent (unintegrated) gluon and quark densities in a proton derived at leading order of QCD running coupling and valid at both small and large <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mi>x</mi></math>. The calculations are performed using the Kimber-Martin-Ryskin/Watt-Martin-Ryskin prescription (in both differential and integral formulations) with different treatment of kinematical constraint, which reflects the angular and strong ordering conditions for parton emissions. As an input, the analytical solution of QCD evolution equations for conventional (collinear) parton distributions is applied, where the valence and nonsinglet quark parts obey the Gross-Llewellyn-Smith and Gottfried sum rules, and momentum conservation for the singlet quark and gluon densities is taken into account. Several phenomenological parameters are extracted from the combined fit to precision data on the proton structure function <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><msub><mi>F</mi><mn>2</mn></msub><mo stretchy="false">(</mo><mi>x</mi><mo>,</mo><msup><mi>Q</mi><mn>2</mn></msup><mo stretchy="false">)</mo></math> collected by the BCDMS, H1, and ZEUS Collaborations, comprising a total of 933 points from 5 datasets. Comparison with the numerical results obtained by other groups is presented, and the phenomenological application to the inclusive <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mi>b</mi></math>-jet production at the LHC is given.

Recently Guiot and van Hameren demonstrated that the upper limit, <math><msub><mi>k</mi><mi>max</mi></msub></math>, of the transverse-momentum integration performed in the <math><msub><mi>k</mi><mi>t</mi></msub></math>-factorization formalism should be almost equal to <math><mi>Q</mi></math>, where <math><mi>Q</mi></math> is the hard scale, otherwise it leads to an overestimation of the proton structure function [<math><msub><mi>F</mi><mn>2</mn></msub><mo>(</mo><mi>x</mi><mo>,</mo><msup><mi>Q</mi><mn>2</mn></msup><mo>)</mo></math>]. In the present work, we show that <math><msub><mi>k</mi><mi>max</mi></msub></math> cannot be equal to <math><mi>Q</mi></math> at low and moderate energy region, and also by considering the gluon and quark contributions to the same perturbative order and a physical gauge for the gluon, i.e., <math><msup><mi>A</mi><mi>μ</mi></msup><msubsup><mi>q</mi><mi>μ</mi><mo>′</mo></msubsup><mo>=</mo><mn>0</mn></math> in the calculation of <math><msubsup><mi>F</mi><mn>2</mn><mrow><mi>b</mi><mover><mi>b</mi><mo>¯</mo></mover></mrow></msubsup></math> in the <math><msub><mi>k</mi><mi>t</mi></msub></math>-factorization formalism, we do not encounter any overestimation of the theoretical predictions due to different choices of <math><msub><mi>k</mi><mi>max</mi></msub><mo>&gt;</mo><mi>Q</mi></math>. Finally, the resulted <math><msubsup><mi>σ</mi><mi>red</mi><mrow><mi>b</mi><mover><mi>b</mi><mo>¯</mo></mover></mrow></msubsup></math> and <math><msubsup><mi>F</mi><mn>2</mn><mrow><mi>b</mi><mover><mi>b</mi><mo>¯</mo></mover></mrow></msubsup></math> are compared to the experimental data and the theoretical predictions. In general, the extracted <math><msubsup><mi>σ</mi><mi>red</mi><mrow><mi>b</mi><mover><mi>b</mi><mo>¯</mo></mover></mrow></msubsup></math> and <math><msubsup><mi>F</mi><mn>2</mn><mrow><mi>b</mi><mover><mi>b</mi><mo>¯</mo></mover></mrow></msubsup></math> based on the KMR and MRW approaches are in perfect agreement with the experimental data and theoretical predictions at high energies, but at low and moderate energies, the one developed from the KMR approach has better consistency than that of the MRW approach.

Phenomenological investigation of the beauty content of a proton in the framework of <math><msub><mi>k</mi><mi>t</mi></msub></math>-factorization using Kimber-Martin-Ryskin and Martin-Ryskin-Watt unintegrated parton distributions

We discuss the imaginary-time formalism for field theories in thermal equilibrium in uniformly accelerating frames. We show that under a Wick rotation of Minkowski spacetime, the Rindler event horizon shrinks to a point in a two-dimensional subspace tangential to the acceleration direction and the imaginary time. We demonstrate that the accelerated version of the Kubo-Martin-Schwinger (KMS) condition implies an identification of all spacetime points related by integer-multiple rotations in the tangential subspace about this Euclidean Rindler event-horizon point, with the rotational quanta defined by the thermal acceleration, <math><mi>α</mi><mo>=</mo><mi>a</mi><mo>/</mo><mi>T</mi></math>. In the Wick-rotated Rindler hyperbolic coordinates, the KMS relations reduce to standard (anti-)periodic boundary conditions in terms of the imaginary proper time (rapidity) coordinate. Our findings pave the way to study, using first-principle lattice simulations, the Hawking-Unruh radiation in geometries with event horizons, phase transitions in accelerating Early Universe and early stages of quark-gluon plasma created in relativistic heavy-ion collisions.

Acceleration as a circular motion along an imaginary circle: Kubo-Martin-Schwinger condition for accelerating field theories in imaginary-time formalism

We refine and extend a recent construction of sets of black hole microstates with semiclassical interiors that span a Hilbert space of dimension <math><msup><mi>e</mi><mi>S</mi></msup></math>, where <math><mi>S</mi></math> is the black hole entropy. We elaborate on the definition and properties of microstates in statistical and black hole mechanics. The gravitational description of microstates employs matter shells in the interior of the black hole, and we argue that in the limit where the shells are very heavy, the construction acquires universal validity. To this end, we show it for very wide classes of black holes; we first extend the construction to rotating and charged black holes, including extremal and near-extremal solutions, with or without supersymmetry, and we sketch how the construction of microstates can be embedded in string theory. We then describe how the approach can include general quantum corrections, near or far from extremality. For supersymmetric black holes, the microstates we construct differ from other recent constructions in that the interior excitations are not confined within the near-extremal throat.

Universal construction of black hole microstates

We construct an infinite family of microstates for black holes in Minkowski spacetime which have effective semiclassical descriptions in terms of collapsing dust shells in the black hole interior. Quantum mechanical wormholes cause these states to have exponentially small, but universal, overlaps. We show that these overlaps imply that the microstates span a Hilbert space of log dimension equal to the event horizon area divided by four times the Newton constant, explaining the statistical origin of the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy.

Microscopic Origin of the Entropy of Astrophysical Black Holes

The principle of maximum ignorance posits that the coarse-grained description of a system is maximally agnostic about its underlying microscopic structure. We briefly review this principle for random matrix theory and for the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis. We then apply this principle in holography to construct ensembles of random mixed states. This leads to an ensemble of microstates which models our microscopic ignorance, and which on average reproduces the effective semiclassical physics of a given bulk state. We call this ensemble the state-averaging ansatz. The output of our model is a prediction for semiclassical contributions to variances and higher statistical moments over the ensemble of microstates. The statistical moments provide coarse-grained — yet gravitationally non-perturbative — information about the microstructure of the individual states of the ensemble. We show that these contributions exactly match the on-shell action of known wormhole configurations of the gravitational path integral. These results strengthen the view that wormholes simply parametrize the ignorance of the microstructure of a fundamental state, given a fixed semiclassical bulk description.

A principle of maximum ignorance for semiclassical gravity

We construct entangled microstates of a pair of holographic CFTs whose dual semiclassical description includes big bang-big crunch AdS cosmologies in spaces without boundaries. The cosmology is supported by inhomogeneous heavy matter and it partially purifies the bulk entanglement of two disconnected auxiliary AdS spacetimes. We show that the island formula for the fine grained entropy of one of the CFTs follows from a standard gravitational replica trick calculation. In generic settings, the cosmology is contained in the entanglement wedge of one of the two CFTs. We then investigate properties of the cosmology-to-boundary encoding map, and in particular, its non-isometric character. Restricting our attention to a specific class of states on the cosmology, we provide an explicit, and state-dependent, boundary representation of operators acting on the cosmology. Finally, under genericity assumptions, we argue for a non-isometric to approximately-isometric transition of the cosmology-to-boundary map for “simple” states on the cosmology as a function of the bulk entanglement, with tensor network toy models of our setup as a guide.
