We compute the energy loss of heavy fermions moving in a plasma, taking into account the modification of the photon collective modes induced by collisions using a Bhatnagar-Gross–Krook collisional kernel. We include contributions from both hard and soft scatterings of the heavy fermion using a collisionally modified hard-thermal-loop resummed propagator. Using this method, one does not need to introduce a separation scale between hard- and soft-momentum exchanges. To place our calculation in context, we review other theoretical approaches to computing the collisional energy loss of fermions and discuss the systematics and results obtained in each approach compared to using a resummed propagator for both hard and soft momentum exchanges. Our final results indicate that self-consistently including the effect of collisions in the self-energies of the resummed propagator results in an increased energy loss compared to using collisionless hard-thermal-loop propagators. The effect becomes larger as the magnitude of the coupling constant and the velocity of the fermion increase.

Energy loss of a heavy fermion in a collisional QED plasma

We compute the suppression of bottomonium in the quark-gluon plasma using the three-loop QCD static potential. The potential describes the spin-averaged bottomonium spectrum below threshold with a less than 1% error. Within potential nonrelativistic quantum chromodynamics and an open quantum systems framework, we compute the evolution of the bottomonium density matrix. The values of the quarkonium transport coefficients are obtained from lattice QCD measurements of the bottomonium in-medium width and thermal mass shift; we additionally include for the first time a vacuum contribution to the dispersive coefficient <math><mi>γ</mi></math>. Using the three-loop potential and the values of the heavy quarkonium transport coefficients, we find that the resulting bottomonium nuclear modification factor is consistent with experimental observations, while at the same time reproducing the lattice measurements of the in-medium width.

Bottomonium suppression from the three-loop QCD potential

Quantum Chromodynamics, the theory of quarks and gluons, whose interactions can be described by a local SU(3) gauge symmetry with charges called “color quantum numbers”, is reviewed; the goal of this review is to provide advanced Ph.D. students a comprehensive handbook, helpful for their research. When QCD was “discovered” 50 years ago, the idea that quarks could exist, but not be observed, left most physicists unconvinced. Then, with the discovery of charmonium in 1974 and the explanation of its excited states using the Cornell potential, consisting of the sum of a Coulomb-like attraction and a long range linear confining potential, the theory was suddenly widely accepted. This paradigm shift is now referred to as the November revolution. It had been anticipated by the observation of scaling in deep inelastic scattering, and was followed by the discovery of gluons in three-jet events. The parameters of QCD include the running coupling constant,  $$\alpha _s(Q^2)$$  <math> <mrow> <msub> <mi>α</mi> <mi>s</mi> </msub> <mrow> <mo>(</mo> <msup> <mi>Q</mi> <mn>2</mn> </msup> <mo>)</mo> </mrow> </mrow> </math>  , that varies with the energy scale  $$Q^2$$  <math> <msup> <mi>Q</mi> <mn>2</mn> </msup> </math>   characterising the interaction, and six quark masses. QCD cannot be solved analytically, at least not yet, and the large value of  $$\alpha _s$$  <math> <msub> <mi>α</mi> <mi>s</mi> </msub> </math>   at low momentum transfers limits perturbative calculations to the high-energy region where  $$Q^2\gg \varLambda _{{\textrm{QCD}}} ^2\simeq $$  <math> <mrow> <msup> <mi>Q</mi> <mn>2</mn> </msup> <mo>≫</mo> <msubsup> <mi>Λ</mi> <mrow> <mtext>QCD</mtext> </mrow> <mn>2</mn> </msubsup> <mo>≃</mo> </mrow> </math>   (250 MeV) $$^2$$  <math> <msup> <mrow></mrow> <mn>2</mn> </msup> </math>  . Lattice QCD (LQCD), numerical calculations on a discretized space-time lattice, is discussed in detail, the dynamics of the QCD vacuum is visualized, and the expected spectra of mesons and baryons are displayed. Progress in lattice calculations of the structure of nucleons and of quantities related to the phase diagram of dense and hot (or cold) hadronic matter are reviewed. Methods and examples of how to calculate hadronic corrections to weak matrix elements on a lattice are outlined. The wide variety of analytical approximations currently in use, and the accuracy of these approximations, are reviewed. These methods range from the Bethe–Salpeter, Dyson–Schwinger coupled relativistic equations, which are formulated in both Minkowski or Euclidean spaces, to expansions of multi-quark states in a set of basis functions using light-front coordinates, to the AdS/QCD method that imbeds 4-dimensional QCD in a 5-dimensional deSitter space, allowing confinement and spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking to be described in a novel way. Models that assume the number of colors is very large, i.e. make use of the large  $$N_c$$  <math> <msub> <mi>N</mi> <mi>c</mi> </msub> </math>  -limit, give unique insights. Many other techniques that are tailored to specific problems, such as perturbative expansions for high energy scattering or approximate calculations using the operator product expansion are discussed. The very powerful effective field theory techniques that are successful for low energy nuclear systems (chiral effective theory), or for non-relativistic systems involving heavy quarks, or the treatment of gluon exchanges between energetic, collinear partons encountered in jets, are discussed. The spectroscopy of mesons and baryons has played an important historical role in the development of QCD. The famous X,Y,Z states – and the discovery of pentaquarks – have revolutionized hadron spectroscopy; their status and interpretation are reviewed as well as recent progress in the identification of glueballs and hybrids in light-meson spectroscopy. These exotic states add to the spectrum of expected  $$q{{\bar{q}}}$$  <math> <mrow> <mi>q</mi> <mover> <mrow> <mi>q</mi> </mrow> <mrow> <mo>¯</mo> </mrow> </mover> </mrow> </math>   mesons and qqq baryons. The progress in understanding excitations of light and heavy baryons is discussed. The nucleon as the lightest baryon is discussed extensively, its form factors, its partonic structure and the status of the attempt to determine a three-dimensional picture of the parton distribution. An experimental program to study the phase diagram of QCD at high temperature and density started with fixed target experiments in various laboratories in the second half of the 1980s, and then, in this century, with colliders. QCD thermodynamics at high temperature became accessible to LQCD, and numerical results on chiral and deconfinement transitions and properties of the deconfined and chirally restored form of strongly interacting matter, called the Quark–Gluon Plasma (QGP), have become very precise by now. These results can now be confronted with experimental data that are sensitive to the nature of the phase transition. There is clear evidence that the QGP phase is created. This phase of QCD matter can already be characterized by some properties that indicate, within a temperature range of a few times the pseudocritical temperature, the medium behaves like a near ideal liquid. Experimental observables are presented that demonstrate deconfinement. High and ultrahigh density QCD matter at moderate and low temperatures shows interesting features and new phases that are of astrophysical relevance. They are reviewed here and some of the astrophysical implications are discussed. Perturbative QCD and methods to describe the different aspects of scattering processes are discussed. The primary parton–parton scattering in a collision is calculated in perturbative QCD with increasing complexity. The radiation of soft gluons can spoil the perturbative convergence, this can be cured by resummation techniques, which are also described here. Realistic descriptions of QCD scattering events need to model the cascade of quark and gluon splittings until hadron formation sets in, which is done by parton showers. The full event simulation can be performed with Monte Carlo event generators, which simulate the full chain from the hard interaction to the hadronic final states, including the modelling of non-perturbative components. The contribution of the LEP experiments (and of earlier collider experiments) to the study of jets is reviewed. Correlations between jets and the shape of jets had allowed the collaborations to determine the “color factors” – invariants of the SU(3) color group governing the strength of quark–gluon and gluon–gluon interactions. The calculated jet production rates (using perturbative QCD) are shown to agree precisely with data, for jet energies spanning more than five orders of magnitude. The production of jets recoiling against a vector boson,  $$W^\pm $$  <math> <msup> <mi>W</mi> <mo>±</mo> </msup> </math>   or Z, is shown to be well understood. The discovery of the Higgs boson was certainly an important milestone in the development of high-energy physics. The couplings of the Higgs boson to massive vector bosons and fermions that have been measured so far support its interpretation as mass-generating boson as predicted by the Standard Model. The study of the Higgs boson recoiling against hadronic jets (without or with heavy flavors) or against vector bosons is also highlighted. Apart from the description of hard interactions taking place at high energies, the understanding of “soft QCD” is also very important. In this respect, Pomeron – and Odderon – exchange, soft and hard diffraction are discussed. Weak decays of quarks and leptons, the quark mixing matrix and the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon are processes which are governed by weak interactions. However, corrections by strong interactions are important, and these are reviewed. As the measured values are incompatible with (most of) the predictions, the question arises: are these discrepancies first hints for New Physics beyond the Standard Model? This volume concludes with a description of future facilities or important upgrades of existing facilities which improve their luminosity by orders of magnitude. The best is yet to come!

50 Years of quantum chromodynamics

We extract transverse-momentum-dependent feed-down fractions for bottomonium production using a data-driven approach. We use data published by the ATLAS, CMS, and LHCb Collaborations for <math><msqrt><mi>s</mi></msqrt><mo>=</mo><mn>7</mn><mtext> </mtext><mtext> </mtext><mi>TeV</mi></math> proton-proton collisions. Based on this collected data, we produce fits to the differential cross sections for the production of both <math><mi>S</mi></math>- and <math><mi>P</mi></math>-wave bottomonium states. Combining these fits with branching ratios for excited state decays from the Particle Data Group, we compute the feed-down fractions for both the <math><mrow><mi>ϒ</mi><mo>(</mo><mn>1</mn><mi>S</mi><mo>)</mo></mrow></math> and <math><mi>ϒ</mi><mo>(</mo><mn>2</mn><mi>S</mi><mo>)</mo></math> as a function of transverse momentum. Our results indicate a strong dependence on transverse momentum, which is consistent with prior extractions of the feed-down fractions. When evaluated at the average momentum of the states, we find that approximately 75% of <math><mi>ϒ</mi><mo>(</mo><mn>1</mn><mi>S</mi><mo>)</mo></math> and <math><mi>ϒ</mi><mo>(</mo><mn>2</mn><mi>S</mi><mo>)</mo></math> states are produced directly. Our results for the transverse-momentum-dependent feed-down fractions are provided in tabulated form so that they can be used by other research groups.

Transverse momentum dependent feed-down fractions for bottomonium production

In this paper we consider the collective modes of a momentum-space anisotropic quark-gluon plasma taking into account the effect of collisions between the plasma constituents. Our analysis is carried out using a collisional kernel of Bhatnagar-Gross–Krook form and extends prior analyses in the literature by considering all possible angles of propagation of the gluonic modes relative to the momentum-anisotropy axis. We extract both the stable and unstable modes as a function of the collision rate and confirm prior findings that gluonic unstable modes can be eliminated from the spectrum if the collision rate is sufficiently large. In addition, we discuss the conditions necessary for the existence of unstable modes and present evidence that unstable mode growth rates are maximal for modes with momentum along the anisotropy direction. Finally, we demonstrate that when there is a finite collisional rate, gluonic unstable modes are absent from the spectrum at both small and large momentum anisotropy. These results pave the way for understanding the impact of collisions on a variety of nonequilibrium quark-gluon plasma observables.

Collective modes of a collisional anisotropic quark-gluon plasma

We demonstrate the importance of quantum jumps in the nonequilibrium evolution of bottomonium states in the quark-gluon plasma. Based on nonrelativistic effective field theory and the open quantum system framework, we evolve the density matrix of color singlet and octet pairs. We show that quantum regeneration of singlet states from octet configurations is necessary to understand experimental results for the suppression of both bottomonium ground and excited states. The values of the heavy-quarkonium transport coefficients used are consistent with recent lattice QCD determinations.

Regeneration of bottomonia in an open quantum systems approach

We present potential nonrelativistic quantum chromodynamics (pNRQCD) predictions for bottomonium suppression in <math><mrow><msqrt><mrow><msub><mrow><mi>s</mi></mrow><mrow><mi>N</mi><mi>N</mi></mrow></msub></mrow></msqrt><mo>=</mo><mn>200</mn><mtext> </mtext><mtext> </mtext><mi>GeV</mi></mrow></math>, 2.76 TeV, and 5.02 TeV heavy-ion collisions using an open quantum system (OQS) description of the reduced heavy-quark antiquark density matrix. Compared to prior <math><mrow><mi>OQS</mi><mo>+</mo><mi>pNRQCD</mi></mrow></math> studies we include the rapidity dependence of bottomonium production and evolution, allowing for a fully three-dimensional description of bottomonium trajectories in the quark-gluon plasma. The underlying formalism used to compute the ground and excited state survival probabilities is based on a Lindblad equation that is accurate to next-to-leading order (NLO) in the binding energy over temperature. For the background evolution, we make use of a <math><mrow><mn>3</mn><mo>+</mo><mn>1</mn><mi>D</mi></mrow></math> viscous hydrodynamics code which reproduces soft hadron observables at all three collision energies. We find good agreement between NLO <math><mrow><mi>OQS</mi><mo>+</mo><mi>pNRQCD</mi></mrow></math> predictions and data taken at LHC energies; however, at RHIC energies, there is tension with recent bottomonium suppression measurements by the STAR Collaboration.

Bottomonium suppression at RHIC and LHC in an open quantum system approach

We compute bottomonium suppression and elliptic flow within the potential nonrelativistic quantum chromodynamics effective field theory using an open quantum systems approach. For the hydrodynamical background, we use <math><mrow><mn>2</mn><mo>+</mo><mn>1</mn></mrow><mtext>D</mtext></math> MUSIC second-order viscous hydrodynamics with IP-glasma initial conditions and evolve bottom/antibottom quantum wave packets in real time in these backgrounds. We find that the impact of fluctuating initial conditions is small when compared to results obtained using smooth initial conditions. Including the effect of fluctuating initial conditions, we find that the <math><mrow><mi>Υ</mi><mo>(</mo><mn>1</mn><mi>S</mi><mo>)</mo></mrow></math> integrated elliptic flow is <math><mrow><msub><mi>v</mi><mn>2</mn></msub><mrow><mo>[</mo><mn>1</mn><mi>S</mi><mo>]</mo></mrow><mo>=</mo><mn>0.005</mn><mo>±</mo><mn>0.002</mn><mo>±</mo><mn>0.001</mn></mrow></math>, with the first and second variations corresponding to statistical and systematic theoretical uncertainties, respectively.

Impact of fluctuating initial conditions on bottomonium suppression in 5.02 TeV heavy-ion collisions

We use quasiparticle anisotropic hydrodynamics to study the non-conformal and non-extensive dynamics of a system undergoing boost-invariant Bjorken expansion. To introduce nonextensivity, we use an underlying Tsallis distribution with a time-dependent nonextensivity parameter q. By taking moments of the quasiparticle Boltzmann equation in the relaxation-time approximation, we obtain dynamical equations which allow us to determine the time evolution of all microscopic parameters including q. We compare numerical solutions for bulk observables obtained using the nonextensive evolution with results obtained using quasiparticle anisotropic hydrodynamics with a Boltzmann distribution function ( $$q \rightarrow 1$$  <math> <mrow> <mi>q</mi> <mo>→</mo> <mn>1</mn> </mrow> </math>  ). We show that the evolution of the temperature, pressure ratio, and scaled energy density, are quite insensitive to which distribution function is assumed. However, we find significant differences in the early-time evolution of the bulk pressure which are observed for even small deviations from the Boltzmann distribution function. Finally, we discuss the existence of non-conformal hydrodynamic attractors for the longitudinal and transverse pressures, the bulk and shear viscous corrections, and the nonextensivity parameter q.

Nonextensive hydrodynamics of boost-invariant plasmas

We generalize a complex heavy-quark potential model from an isotropic QCD plasma to an anisotropic one by replacing the Debye mass m  D  with an anisotropic screening mass depending on the quark pair alignment with respect to the direction of anisotropy. Such an angle-dependent mass is determined by matching the perturbative contributions in the potential model to the exact result obtained in the Hard-Thermal-Loop resummed perturbation theory. An advantage of the resulting potential model is that its angular dependence can be effectively described by using a set of angle-averaged screening masses as proposed in our previous work. Consequently, one could solve a one-dimensional Schrödinger equation with a potential model built by changing the anisotropic screening masses into the corresponding angle-averaged ones, and reproduce the full three-dimensional results for the binding energies and decay widths of low-lying quarkonium bound states to very high accuracy. Finally, turning to dynamics, we demonstrate that the one-dimensional effective potential can accurately describe the time evolution of the vacuum overlaps obtained using the full three-dimensional anisotropic potential. This includes the splitting of different p-wave polarizations.
