We provide an effective solution of the 1D crossing equation. We begin by arguing that crossing constraints can be recast in terms of bases of sum rules associated to special sets of CFT data — extremal solutions — which solve these constraints in a minimal way and naturally saturate positivity bounds on the space of CFTs. We conjecture, argue and check extensively that any extremal solution behaves as a generalized free field in the UV. This allows us to reconstruct the entirety of their CFT data using a rapidly convergent “hybrid bootstrap” method, which combines numerics and analytics. Strikingly, as we approach special corners in the space of extremal solutions we find that their CFT data can present non-trivial structure up to arbitrarily large energies. We interpret these corners as flat space limits of QFTs in AdS , which extremal solutions naturally describe. This picture allows us to bootstrap their CFT data in these limits in terms of 2d S-matrices, and conversely provide a microscopic CFT construction of the latter. Further evidence for this QFT in AdS description of extremal solutions comes from an explicit construction of bulk QFT operators solving an AdS locality problem. Concretely we show that it is possible to canonically associate one or more such operators to any extremal solution by explicitly solving for their BOE data. In the special case where this operator is the bulk stress-tensor we combine crossing and bulk locality constraints to derive stronger bounds on the OPE and BOE data, including an exact bootstrap lower bound on the central charge $\textit{C}$ ≥ 1/2.

Solving 1D crossing and QFT2/CFT1

The problem of constructing local bulk observables from boundary CFT data is of paramount importance in holography. In this work, we begin addressing this question from a modern bootstrap perspective. Our main tool is the boundary operator expansion (BOE), which holds for any QFT in AdS. Following Kabat and Lifschytz, we argue that the BOE is strongly constrained by demanding locality of correlators involving bulk fields. Focusing on ‘AdS form factors’ of one bulk and two boundary insertions, we reformulate these locality constraints as a complete set of sum rules on the BOE data. We show that these sum rules lead to a manifestly local representation of form factors in terms of ‘local blocks’. The sum rules are valid non-perturbatively, but are especially well-adapted for perturbative computations in AdS where they allow us to bootstrap the BOE data in a systematic fashion. Finally, in the flat space limit, we show that the AdS form factor reduces to an ordinary QFT form factor. We provide a phase shift formula for it in terms of the BOE and CFT data. In two dimensions, this formula makes manifest Watson’s equations for integrable form factors under certain extremality assumptions on the CFT. We discuss the eventual modifications of our formalism to account for dressed operators in AdS.

Bootstrapping bulk locality. Part I: Sum rules for AdS form factors

We study families of one-dimensional CFTs relevant for describing gapped QFTs in AdS2. Using the Polyakov bootstrap as our main tool, we explain how S-matrices emerge from the flat space limit of CFT correlators. In this limit we prove that the CFT OPE density matches that of a generalized free field, and that this implies unitarity of the S-matrix. We establish a CFT dispersion formula for the S-matrix, proving its analyticity except for singularities on the real axis which we characterize in terms of the CFT data. In particular positivity of the OPE establishes that any such S-matrix must satisfy extended unitarity conditions. We also carefully prove that for physical kinematics the S-matrix may be more directly described by a phase shift formula. Our results crucially depend on the assumption of a certain gap in the spectrum of operators. We bootstrap perturbative AdS bubble, triangle and box diagrams and find that the presence of anomalous thresholds in S-matrices are precisely signaled by an unbounded OPE arising from violating this assumption. Finally we clarify the relation between unitarity saturating S-matrices and extremal CFTs, establish a mapping between the dual S-matrix and CFT bootstraps, and discuss how our results help understand UV completeness or lack thereof for specific S-matrices.

From conformal correlators to analytic S-matrices: CFT1/QFT2

We consider the problem of bounding CFT correlators on the Euclidean section. By reformulating the question as an optimization problem, we construct functionals numerically which determine upper and lower bounds on correlators under several circumstances. A useful outcome of our analysis is that the gap maximization bootstrap problem can be reproduced by a numerically easier optimization problem. We find that the 3d Ising spin correlator takes the minimal possible allowed values on the Euclidean section. Turning to the maximization problem we find that for d &gt; 2 there are gap-independent maximal bounds on CFT correlators. Under certain conditions we show that the maximizing correlator is given by the generalized free boson for general Euclidean kinematics. In our explorations we also uncover an intriguing 3d CFT which saturates gap, OPE maximization and correlator value bounds. Finally we comment on the relation between our functionals and the Polyakov bootstrap.

Bounding 3d CFT correlators

We revisit the problem of bootstrapping CFT correlators of charged fields. After discussing in detail how bounds for uncharged fields can be recycled to the charged case, we introduce two sets of analytic functional bases for correlators on the line. The first, which we call “simple”, is essentially a direct sum of analytic functionals for the uncharged case. We use it to establish very general bounds on the OPE density appearing in charged correlators. The second basis is dual to generalized free fields and we explain how it is related to a charged version of the Polyakov bootstrap. We apply these functionals to map out the space of correlators and obtain new improved bounds on the 3d Ising twist defect.

Charging up the functional bootstrap

We derive new crossing-symmetric dispersion formulae for CFT correlators restricted to the line. The formulae are equivalent to the sum rules implied by what we call master functionals, which are analytic extremal functionals which act on the crossing equation. The dispersion relations provide an equivalent formulation of the constraints of the Polyakov bootstrap and hence of crossing symmetry on the line. The built in positivity properties imply simple and exact lower and upper bounds on the values of general CFT correlators on the Euclidean section, which are saturated by generalized free fields. Besides bounds on correlators, we apply this technology to determine new universal constraints on the Regge limit of arbitrary CFTs and obtain very simple and accurate representations of the 3d Ising spin correlator.

Dispersion relations and exact bounds on CFT correlators

Quantum field theories in AdS generate conformal correlation functions on the boundary, and in the limit where AdS is nearly flat one should be able to extract an S-matrix from such correlators. We discuss a particularly simple position-space procedure to do so. It features a direct map from boundary positions to (on-shell) momenta and thereby relates cross ratios to Mandelstam invariants. This recipe succeeds in several examples, includes the momentum-conserving delta functions, and can be shown to imply the two proposals in [1] based on Mellin space and on the OPE data. Interestingly the procedure does not always work: the Landau singularities of a Feynman diagram are shown to be part of larger regions, to be called ‘bad regions’, where the flat-space limit of the Witten diagram diverges. To capture these divergences we introduce the notion of Landau diagrams in AdS. As in flat space, these describe on-shell particles propagating over large distances in a complexified space, with a form of momentum conservation holding at each bulk vertex. As an application we recover the anomalous threshold of the four-point triangle diagram at the boundary of a bad region.

Landau diagrams in AdS and S-matrices from conformal correlators

We apply recently constructed functional bases to the numerical conformal bootstrap for 1D CFTs. We argue and show that numerical results in this basis converge much faster than the traditional derivative basis. In particular, truncations of the crossing equation with even a handful of components can lead to extremely accurate results, in opposition to hundreds of components in the usual approach. We explain how this is a consequence of the functional basis correctly capturing the asymptotics of bound-saturating extremal solutions to crossing. We discuss how these methods can and should be implemented in higher dimensional applications.

A functional approach to the numerical conformal bootstrap

We obtain general bounds on scattering processes involving charged particles in 1+1 spacetime dimensions. After a general analysis we derive mostly numerical bounds on couplings in theories with O( ) and U( ) global symmetries. The bounds are consistently saturated by -matrices without particle production, and in many cases by known integrable -matrices. Our work provides a blueprint for a similar analysis in higher dimensions.

Bounding scattering of charged particles in 1+1 dimensions

We introduce a new approach to the study of the crossing equation for CFTs in the presence of a boundary. We argue that there is a basis for this equation related to the generalized free field solution. The dual basis is a set of linear functionals which act on the crossing equation to give a set of sum rules on the boundary CFT data: the functional bootstrap equations. We show these equations are essentially equivalent to a Polyakov-type approach to the bootstrap of BCFTs, and show how to fix the so-called contact term ambiguity in that context. Finally, the functional bootstrap equations diagonalize perturbation theory around generalized free fields, which we use to recover the Wilson-Fisher BCFT data in the -expansion to order .
