An $\textit{SU}$(3) flavor projection operator technique is implemented to construct the baryon-meson scattering amplitude within the framework of the $1/N_c$ expansion of quantum chromodynamics (QCD), where $N_c$ represents the number of color charges. The operator technique is implemented to evaluate not only the lowest-order scattering amplitude but also effects from the first-order perturbative $\textit{SU}$(3) flavor symmetry breaking and strong isospin breaking. The most general expression is obtained by explicitly accounting for the effects of the decuplet-octet baryon mass difference. At order ${\cal{O}}(1/N_c^2)$ , a large number of unknown operator coefficients appear, and therefore, there is little additional predictive power unless leading and subleading terms are retained. Although the resultant expression is sufficiently general that it can be applied to any incoming and outgoing baryons and pseudo scalar mesons, provided that the Gell-Mann--Nishijima scheme is respected, results for $N\pi\to N\pi$ scattering processes are explicitly considered.

We present the results of searches for nucleon decays via <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mi>p</mi><mo stretchy="false">→</mo><mi>ν</mi><msup><mi>π</mi><mo>+</mo></msup></math> and <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mi>n</mi><mo stretchy="false">→</mo><mi>ν</mi><msup><mi>π</mi><mn>0</mn></msup></math> using a <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mrow><mn>0.484</mn><mtext> </mtext><mtext> </mtext><mi>Mt</mi><mo>·</mo><mi>yr</mi></mrow></math> exposure of Super-Kamiokande I-V data covering the entire pure water phase of the experiment. Various improvements on the previous 2014 nucleon decay search [<a href="http://dx.doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevLett.113.121802">Phys. Rev. Lett. 113, 121802 (2014)</a>], which used an exposure of <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mrow><mn>0.173</mn><mtext> </mtext><mtext> </mtext><mi>Mt</mi><mo>·</mo><mi>yr</mi></mrow></math>, are incorporated. The physics models related to pion production and nuclear interaction are refined with external data, and a more comprehensive set of systematic uncertainties, now including those associated with the atmospheric neutrino flux and pion production channels, is considered. Also, the fiducial volume has been expanded by 21%. No significant indication of a nucleon decay signal is found beyond the expected background. Lower bounds on the nucleon partial lifetimes are determined to be <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mn>3.5</mn><mo>×</mo><msup><mn>10</mn><mn>32</mn></msup><mtext> </mtext><mtext> </mtext><mi>yr</mi></math> for <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mi>p</mi><mo stretchy="false">→</mo><mi>ν</mi><msup><mi>π</mi><mo>+</mo></msup></math> and <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mn>1.4</mn><mo>×</mo><msup><mn>10</mn><mn>33</mn></msup><mtext> </mtext><mtext> </mtext><mi>yr</mi></math> for <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mi>n</mi><mo stretchy="false">→</mo><mi>ν</mi><msup><mi>π</mi><mn>0</mn></msup></math> at 90% confidence level.

Search for nucleon decay via <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mi>p</mi><mo stretchy="false">→</mo><mi>ν</mi><msup><mi>π</mi><mo>+</mo></msup></math> and <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mi>n</mi><mo stretchy="false">→</mo><mi>ν</mi><msup><mi>π</mi><mn>0</mn></msup></math> in 0.484 Mton-year of Super-Kamiokande data

In this work, we employ the quark-meson coupling model to investigate the mass shifts of <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mn>1</mn><mi>P</mi></math>-wave charmonia <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><msub><mi>χ</mi><mrow><mi>c</mi><mi>J</mi></mrow></msub><mo stretchy="false">(</mo><mn>1</mn><mi>P</mi><mo stretchy="false">)</mo></math> (<math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mi>J</mi><mo>=</mo><mn>0</mn></math>, 1, 2) in cold symmetric nuclear matter by incorporating in-medium loop contributions to the <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><msub><mi>χ</mi><mrow><mi>c</mi><mi>J</mi></mrow></msub><mo stretchy="false">(</mo><mn>1</mn><mi>P</mi><mo stretchy="false">)</mo></math> self-energy within the unquenched picture. At normal nuclear matter density, we obtain significant mass reductions of about 60 MeV for the <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><msub><mi>χ</mi><mrow><mi>c</mi><mi>J</mi></mrow></msub><mo stretchy="false">(</mo><mn>1</mn><mi>P</mi><mo stretchy="false">)</mo></math> states, with the <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><msub><mi>χ</mi><mrow><mi>c</mi><mn>2</mn></mrow></msub><mo stretchy="false">(</mo><mn>1</mn><mi>P</mi><mo stretchy="false">)</mo></math> mass shift primarily arising from the vector-vector loop. Our results also indicate the absence of level crossing between the in-medium <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><msub><mi>χ</mi><mrow><mi>c</mi><mi>J</mi></mrow></msub><mo stretchy="false">(</mo><mn>1</mn><mi>P</mi><mo stretchy="false">)</mo></math> mass and the <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mi>D</mi><mover accent="true"><mi>D</mi><mo stretchy="false">¯</mo></mover></math> mass threshold up to <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><msub><mi>ρ</mi><mi>B</mi></msub><mo>&lt;</mo><mn>3</mn><msub><mi>ρ</mi><mn>0</mn></msub></math>—a feature that could be probed in the compressed baryonic matter experiment at FAIR and the beam energy scan program at RHIC.

Medium modifications of <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mn>1</mn><mi>P</mi></math>-wave charmonia <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><msub><mi>χ</mi><mrow><mi>c</mi><mi>J</mi></mrow></msub><mo stretchy="false">(</mo><mn>1</mn><mi>P</mi><mo stretchy="false">)</mo></math> in cold nuclear matter

We perform a global Bayesian analysis of diffractive <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mi mathvariant="normal">J</mi><mo>/</mo><mi>ψ</mi></math> production in <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mi>γ</mi><mo>+</mo><mi>p</mi></math> and <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mi>γ</mi><mo>+</mo><mi>Pb</mi></math> collisions using a color glass condensate (CGC) based calculation framework. As past calculations have shown that CGC-based models typically overpredict the <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mi mathvariant="normal">J</mi><mo>/</mo><mi>ψ</mi></math> production in <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mi>γ</mi><mo>+</mo><mi>Pb</mi></math> collisions at high center of mass energy, we address the question of whether it is possible to describe coherent and incoherent diffractive <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mi mathvariant="normal">J</mi><mo>/</mo><mi>ψ</mi></math> data from <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mi>γ</mi><mo>+</mo><mi>p</mi></math> collisions at Hadron–Electron Ring Accelerator (HERA) and the LHC, and from <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mi>γ</mi><mo>+</mo><mi>Pb</mi></math> collisions at the LHC simultaneously. Our results indicate that a simultaneous description of <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mi>γ</mi><mo>+</mo><mi>p</mi></math> and <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mi>γ</mi><mo>+</mo><mi>Pb</mi></math> data is challenging, with results improving when an overall <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mi>K</mi></math>-factor—scaling <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mi>γ</mi><mo>+</mo><mi>p</mi></math> and <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mi>γ</mi><mo>+</mo><mi>Pb</mi></math> cross sections to absorb model uncertainties—is introduced.

Global Bayesian analysis of <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mrow><mi mathvariant="normal">J</mi><mo>/</mo><mi>ψ</mi></mrow></math> photoproduction on proton and lead targets

The thermal confinement phase transition in <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mrow><mrow><mi>SU</mi></mrow><mo stretchy="false">(</mo><mi>N</mi><mo stretchy="false">)</mo></mrow></math> Yang-Mills theory is first order for <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mrow><mi>N</mi><mo>≥</mo><mn>3</mn></mrow></math>, with bounce action scaling as <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mrow><msup><mrow><mi>N</mi></mrow><mrow><mn>2</mn></mrow></msup></mrow></math>. Remarkably, lattice data for the action include a small coefficient whose presence likely strongly alters the phase transition dynamics. We give evidence, utilizing insights from softly broken supersymmetric Yang-Mills models, that the small coefficient originates from a deconfined phase instability just below the critical temperature. We predict the maximum achievable supercooling in <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mrow><mi>SU</mi></mrow><mo stretchy="false">(</mo><mi>N</mi><mo stretchy="false">)</mo></math> theories to be a few percent, which can be tested on the lattice. We briefly discuss the potentially significant suppression of the associated cosmological gravitational wave signals.
