The perturbation series for the renormalization group functions of the $\textit{O}$($\textit{N}$)-symmetric $$\phi ^4$$ field theory are divergent but asymptotic. They are usually followed by Resummation calculations to extract reliable results. Although the same features exist for QED series, their partial sums can return accurate results because the perturbation parameter is small. In this work, however, we show that, for $$N\ge 4$$ , the partial sum (according to optimal truncation) of the series for the exponents $$\nu $$ and $$\eta $$ gives results that are very competitive to the recent Monte Carlo, Non-perturbative Renormalization group and Conformal field calculations. The order at which the series is truncated is inversely proportional to $$\alpha =\sigma \varepsilon =\frac{3\varepsilon }{N+8}$$ which is higher for larger $\textit{N}$ while the error is smaller. Thus as $\textit{N}$ increases one expects accurate perturbative results like the QED case. Such optimal truncation, however, doesn’t work for the series of the critical exponent $$\omega $$ (for intermediate values of $\textit{N}$) as the truncated series includes only the first order. Nevertheless, for $$N\ge 4$$ , the large-order parameter $$\sigma =\frac{3}{N+8}$$ is getting smaller which rationalizes for the use of Pad $$\acute{\textrm{e}}$$ approximation. For that aim, we first obtain the seven-loop $$\varepsilon $$ -series from the recent available corresponding $\textit{g}$-expansion. The seven-loop Pad $$\acute{\textrm{e}}$$ approximation gives accurate results for the three exponents. Besides, for all the seven orders in the series, the large-$\textit{N}$ limit leads to the exact result predicted by the non-perturbative 1/$\textit{N}$-expansion.

We present and study new nontopological soliton solutions in the <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mi>U</mi><mo stretchy="false">(</mo><mn>1</mn><mo stretchy="false">)</mo></math> gauged nonlinear <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mi>O</mi><mo stretchy="false">(</mo><mn>3</mn><mo stretchy="false">)</mo></math> sigma-model with a symmetry breaking potential in <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mrow><mn>3</mn><mo>+</mo><mn>1</mn></mrow></math> dimensional flat space-time. The configurations are endowed with an electric and magnetic field and also carry a nonvanishing angular momentum density. We discuss properties of these solitons and investigate the domains of their existence.

CUPID, the CUORE Upgrade with Particle Identification, is a next-generation experiment to search for neutrinoless double beta decay ( $$0\mathrm {\nu \beta \beta }$$ ) and other rare events using enriched Li $$_{2}$$ $$^{100}$$ MoO $$_{4}$$ scintillating bolometers. It will be hosted by the CUORE cryostat located at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso in Italy. The main physics goal of CUPID is to search for $$0\mathrm {\nu \beta \beta }$$ of $$^{100}$$ Mo with a discovery sensitivity covering the full neutrino mass regime in the inverted ordering scenario, as well as the portion of the normal ordering regime with lightest neutrino mass larger than 10 meV. With a conservative background index of 10 $$^{-4}$$ cts $$/($$ keV $$\cdot $$ kg $$\cdot $$ yr $$)$$ , 240 kg isotope mass, 5 keV FWHM energy resolution at 3 MeV and 10 live-years of data taking, CUPID will have a 90% C.L. half-life exclusion sensitivity of $$1.8\cdot 10^{27}$$ yr, corresponding to an effective Majorana neutrino mass ( $$m_{\beta \beta }$$ ) sensitivity of 9–15 meV, and a $$3\sigma $$ discovery sensitivity of $$1\cdot 10^{27}$$ yr, corresponding to an $$m_{\beta \beta }$$ range of 12–21 meV.

We suggest a dynamical mechanism which explains why, in the supersymmetric Ishibashi-Kawai-Kitazawa-Tsuchiya matrix model, the <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mi>S</mi><mi>O</mi><mo stretchy="false">(</mo><mn>9</mn><mo stretchy="false">)</mo></math> symmetry of the Lagrangian is spontaneously broken to <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mi>S</mi><mi>O</mi><mo stretchy="false">(</mo><mn>3</mn><mo stretchy="false">)</mo><mo>×</mo><mi>S</mi><mi>O</mi><mo stretchy="false">(</mo><mn>6</mn><mo stretchy="false">)</mo></math>, allowing only three large classical spatial dimensions to emerge. The argument relies on the identification of D-strings as stable excitations of the matrices about the cosmological background and the absence of forces between parallel D-string excitations. A spatial dimension can only become large if the D-strings winding in that direction can annihilate. In the absence of forces, this requires the string-world sheets to intersect, a process which is highly suppressed if more than three dimensions of space are large. Implications for a recently proposed matrix cosmology scenario are discussed.

We consider a bulk plus boundary extension of Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity coupled with non-Abelian gauge fields. The generalization is performed in the Poisson sigma model formulation and it is derived as a dimensional reduction of the <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><msub><mi>AdS</mi><mn>3</mn></msub></math> Chern-Simons theory with Wess-Zumino-Witten (WZW) boundary terms. We discuss the role of boundary conditions in relation to the symmetries of the boundary dynamics and we show that the boundary action can be written in terms of coadjoint orbits of an appropriate Virasoro-Kac-Moody group. We obtain a Schwarzian action and interaction terms with additional edge modes that match the effective low-energy action of recent Sachdev–Ye–Kitaev-like tensor models.

We point out that the odd-in-velocity contribution to the <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mi mathvariant="script">O</mi><mo stretchy="false">(</mo><msup><mi>G</mi><mn>4</mn></msup><mo stretchy="false">)</mo></math> radiated angular momentum for two-body scattering is determined by the radiation-reaction (RR) term in the one-loop waveform. This RR term is actually proportional to the tree-level waveform, and this reduces the calculation of the odd-in-velocity contribution to the <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mi mathvariant="script">O</mi><mo stretchy="false">(</mo><msup><mi>G</mi><mn>4</mn></msup><mo stretchy="false">)</mo></math> angular momentum loss, <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mrow><msub><mrow><mi>J</mi></mrow><mrow><mn>2</mn><mtext> </mtext><mtext> </mtext><mi>rad</mi></mrow></msub></mrow></math>, to two loops, instead of three loops as one would expect by power counting. We exploit this simplification, which follows from unitarity, to obtain a closed-form expression for <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mrow><msub><mrow><mi>J</mi></mrow><mrow><mn>2</mn><mtext> </mtext><mtext> </mtext><mi>rad</mi></mrow></msub></mrow></math> for generic velocities, which resums all fractional post-Newtonian (PN) corrections to the <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mi mathvariant="script">O</mi><mo stretchy="false">(</mo><msup><mi>G</mi><mn>4</mn></msup><mo stretchy="false">)</mo></math> angular momentum loss starting at 1.5PN.

Radiation-reaction and angular momentum loss at <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mrow><mi mathvariant="script">O</mi><mo stretchy="false">(</mo><msup><mrow><mi>G</mi></mrow><mrow><mn>4</mn></mrow></msup><mo stretchy="false">)</mo></mrow></math>

We study an $\textit{O}$($\textit{N}$) invariant surface defect in the Wilson-Fisher conformal field theory (CFT) in $\textit{d}$ = 4 – $\textit{ϵ}$ dimensions. This defect is defined by mass deformation on a two-dimensional surface that generates localized disorder and is conjectured to factorize into a pair of ordinary boundary conditions in $\textit{d}$ = 3. We determine defect CFT data associated with the lightest $\textit{O}$($\textit{N}$) singlet and vector operators up to the third order in the $\textit{ϵ}$-expansion, find agreements with results from numerical methods and provide support for the factorization proposal in $\textit{d}$ = 3. Along the way, we observe surprising non-renormalization properties for surface anomalous dimensions and operator-product-expansion coefficients in the $\textit{ϵ}$-expansion. We also analyze the full conformal anomalies for the surface defect.

Surprises in the ordinary: $\textit{O}$($\textit{N}$) invariant surface defect in the $\textit{ϵ}$-expansion

Fusion excitation functions for 19O and 19F + 12C were simultaneously measured along with 20O + 12C using the active-target detector MuSIC@Indiana. Examination of the cross-section just above the barrier reveals a significant suppression of fusion for the 19O + 12C system starting at E <math altimg='si1.svg'><mmultiscripts><mrow><mo>&#8764;</mo></mrow><mprescripts /><mrow><mi mathvariant='normal'>c</mi><mo>.</mo><mi mathvariant='normal'>m</mi><mo>.</mo></mrow><none /></mmultiscripts></math>12 MeV. This suppression is not simply due to the reduced binding of the unpaired neutron in 19O as 17O + 12C does not exhibit the same sharp suppression of the fusion cross-section. Multiple mean-field models are used as a reference to understand the measured fusion excitation functions.

Impact of pairing and neutron-excess on suppression of the above-barrier fusion cross-section in 19O + 12C

We search for the leptonic decay $ D^+\to e^+\nu_{e} $ using an $ e^+e^- $ collision data sample with an integrated luminosity of 20.3 fb $ ^{-1} $ collected with the BESIII detector at a center-of-mass energy of 3.773 GeV. Significant signal is not observed, and an upper limit on the branching fraction of $ D^+\to e^+\nu_{e} $ is set as $ 9.7 \times 10^{-7} $ , at a confidence level of 90%. Our upper limit is an order of magnitude smaller than the previous limit for this decay mode.
