The decay <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mrow><msup><mrow><mi>B</mi></mrow><mrow><mo>±</mo></mrow></msup><mo stretchy="false">→</mo><msubsup><mrow><mi>K</mi></mrow><mrow><mi mathvariant="normal">S</mi></mrow><mrow><mn>0</mn></mrow></msubsup><msup><mrow><mi>π</mi></mrow><mrow><mo>±</mo></mrow></msup></mrow></math>, with a <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mi>C</mi><mi>P</mi></math> asymmetry expected to be close to zero in the standard model, is theoretically clean and sensitive to potential new physics. An analysis of the decays <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mrow><msup><mrow><mi>B</mi></mrow><mrow><mo>±</mo></mrow></msup><mo stretchy="false">→</mo><msubsup><mrow><mi>K</mi></mrow><mrow><mi mathvariant="normal">S</mi></mrow><mrow><mn>0</mn></mrow></msubsup><msup><mrow><mi>π</mi></mrow><mrow><mo>±</mo></mrow></msup></mrow></math> and <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><msup><mi>B</mi><mo>±</mo></msup><mo stretchy="false">→</mo><msubsup><mi>K</mi><mi mathvariant="normal">S</mi><mn>0</mn></msubsup><msup><mi>K</mi><mo>±</mo></msup></math> is performed using proton-proton collision data collected by the LHCb experiment at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mn>5.4</mn><mtext> </mtext><mtext> </mtext><msup><mi>fb</mi><mrow><mo>−</mo><mn>1</mn></mrow></msup></math>. The <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mi>C</mi><mi>P</mi></math> asymmetries are determined to be <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mrow><msup><mrow><mi mathvariant="script">A</mi></mrow><mrow><mi>C</mi><mi>P</mi></mrow></msup><mo stretchy="false">(</mo><msup><mrow><mi>B</mi></mrow><mrow><mo>±</mo></mrow></msup><mo stretchy="false">→</mo><msubsup><mrow><mi>K</mi></mrow><mrow><mi mathvariant="normal">S</mi></mrow><mrow><mn>0</mn></mrow></msubsup><msup><mrow><mi>π</mi></mrow><mrow><mo>±</mo></mrow></msup><mo stretchy="false">)</mo><mo>=</mo><mo>−</mo><mn>0.028</mn><mo>±</mo><mn>0.009</mn><mo>±</mo><mn>0.009</mn></mrow></math> and <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mrow><msup><mrow><mi mathvariant="script">A</mi></mrow><mrow><mi>C</mi><mi>P</mi></mrow></msup><mo stretchy="false">(</mo><msup><mrow><mi>B</mi></mrow><mrow><mo>±</mo></mrow></msup><mo stretchy="false">→</mo><msubsup><mrow><mi>K</mi></mrow><mrow><mi mathvariant="normal">S</mi></mrow><mrow><mn>0</mn></mrow></msubsup><msup><mrow><mi>K</mi></mrow><mrow><mo>±</mo></mrow></msup><mo stretchy="false">)</mo><mo>=</mo><mn>0.118</mn><mo>±</mo><mn>0.062</mn><mo>±</mo><mn>0.031</mn></mrow></math>, and the branching fraction ratio is measured to be <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mrow><mi mathvariant="script">B</mi><mo stretchy="false">(</mo><msup><mrow><mi>B</mi></mrow><mrow><mo>±</mo></mrow></msup><mo stretchy="false">→</mo><msubsup><mrow><mi>K</mi></mrow><mrow><mi mathvariant="normal">S</mi></mrow><mrow><mn>0</mn></mrow></msubsup><msup><mrow><mi>K</mi></mrow><mrow><mo>±</mo></mrow></msup><mo stretchy="false">)</mo><mo>/</mo><mi mathvariant="script">B</mi><mo stretchy="false">(</mo><msup><mrow><mi>B</mi></mrow><mrow><mo>±</mo></mrow></msup><mo stretchy="false">→</mo><msubsup><mrow><mi>K</mi></mrow><mrow><mi mathvariant="normal">S</mi></mrow><mrow><mn>0</mn></mrow></msubsup><msup><mrow><mi>π</mi></mrow><mrow><mo>±</mo></mrow></msup><mo stretchy="false">)</mo><mo>=</mo><mn>0.055</mn><mo>±</mo><mn>0.004</mn><mo>±</mo><mn>0.002</mn></mrow></math>, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. These results are the most precise measurements of these quantities to date. A search for the rare decay <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><msubsup><mi>B</mi><mi>c</mi><mo>±</mo></msubsup><mo stretchy="false">→</mo><msubsup><mi>K</mi><mi mathvariant="normal">S</mi><mn>0</mn></msubsup><msup><mi>K</mi><mo>±</mo></msup></math> is also performed. No significant signal is observed, and the upper limit on the product of the branching fraction ratio <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mrow><mi mathvariant="script">B</mi><mo stretchy="false">(</mo><msubsup><mrow><mi>B</mi></mrow><mrow><mi>c</mi></mrow><mrow><mo>±</mo></mrow></msubsup><mo stretchy="false">→</mo><msubsup><mrow><mi>K</mi></mrow><mrow><mi mathvariant="normal">S</mi></mrow><mrow><mn>0</mn></mrow></msubsup><msup><mrow><mi>K</mi></mrow><mrow><mo>±</mo></mrow></msup><mo stretchy="false">)</mo><mo>/</mo><mi mathvariant="script">B</mi><mo stretchy="false">(</mo><msup><mrow><mi>B</mi></mrow><mrow><mo>±</mo></mrow></msup><mo stretchy="false">→</mo><msubsup><mrow><mi>K</mi></mrow><mrow><mi mathvariant="normal">S</mi></mrow><mrow><mn>0</mn></mrow></msubsup><msup><mrow><mi>π</mi></mrow><mrow><mo>±</mo></mrow></msup><mo stretchy="false">)</mo></mrow></math> and the fragmentation-fraction ratio <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><msub><mi>f</mi><mi>c</mi></msub><mo>/</mo><msub><mi>f</mi><mi>u</mi></msub></math> is set to be 0.015 (0.016) at the 90% (95%) confidence level.

We investigate the inclusive <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><mrow><mi>J</mi><mo>/</mo><mi>ψ</mi></mrow></math> production in proton-proton <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><mrow><mo>(</mo><mi>p</mi><mi>p</mi><mo>)</mo></mrow></math> collisions at center-of-mass energies <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><mrow><msqrt><mi>s</mi></msqrt><mo>=</mo><mn>5.02</mn></mrow></math>, 7, and 13 TeV using the parton and hadron cascade model PACIAE 4.0. This model extends PYTHIA 8.3 by incorporating partonic and hadronic rescatterings before and after hadronization, respectively. Compared to our earlier study [K.-F. Ye et al., <a href="http://dx.doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevC.109.035201">Phys. Rev. C 109, 035201 (2024)</a>], which considered only the color-singlet processes, the present work includes both the color-singlet and color-octet contributions within the nonrelativistic QCD (NRQCD) framework. In addition to the NRQCD, we also consider the contributions from the cluster collapse and weak decays of <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><mi>b</mi></math> hadrons. We find that the simulated inclusive <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><mrow><mi>J</mi><mo>/</mo><mi>ψ</mi></mrow></math> transverse momentum differential cross sections agree well with the experimental data at both the middle and forward rapidities. We provide a quantitative analysis of the relative contributions for different production mechanisms and their energy and rapidity dependence in the inclusive <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><mrow><mi>J</mi><mo>/</mo><mi>ψ</mi></mrow></math> production. Furthermore, we offer a quantification of the relative contributions of the various components and their energy and rapidity dependence in the NRQCD channels, including the direct production via the hard scattering and the feed-down from the decays of heavier charmonium states such as <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><mrow><mi>ψ</mi><mo>(</mo><mn>2</mn><mi>S</mi><mo>)</mo></mrow></math>, <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><msub><mi>χ</mi><mrow><mi>c</mi><mn>0</mn></mrow></msub></math>, <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><msub><mi>χ</mi><mrow><mi>c</mi><mn>1</mn></mrow></msub></math>, and <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><msub><mi>χ</mi><mrow><mi>c</mi><mn>2</mn></mrow></msub></math>. Finally, we examine the effects of partonic and hadronic rescatterings and offer the quantitative estimate of their impact on the <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><mrow><mi>J</mi><mo>/</mo><mi>ψ</mi></mrow></math> production. These results are entirely new and represent a significant step forward in understanding the mechanisms of the inclusive <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><mrow><mi>J</mi><mo>/</mo><mi>ψ</mi></mrow></math> production in high-energy <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><mrow><mi>p</mi><mi>p</mi></mrow></math> collisions.

We propose a mechanism for relaxing a gauge theory <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mi>C</mi><mi>P</mi></math> violating phase in discrete steps to very small values. The idea is that the <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mi>C</mi><mi>P</mi></math> violating phase includes the magnetic dual of a 4-form flux that can discharge by the nucleation of membranes. Inside the bubbles surrounded by the membranes, the total <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mi>C</mi><mi>P</mi></math> violating phase is reduced. When the bubbles are produced rapidly during radiation domination in the early Universe, near the chiral symmetry breaking scale, they will collide and percolate, melting away into gauge theory radiation and dramatically relaxing <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mi>C</mi><mi>P</mi></math> violation.

Quantal theory of restoration of strong <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mi>C</mi><mi>P</mi></math> symmetry

The measurement of three-dimensional femtoscopic correlations between identical charged kaons (K K ) produced in p–Pb collisions at center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair $$\sqrt{{s}_{\text{NN}}}=5.02$$ TeV with ALICE at the LHC is presented for the first time. This measurement, supplementary to those in pp and Pb–Pb collisions, allows understanding the particle-production mechanisms at different charged-particle multiplicities and provides information on the dynamics of the source of particles created in p–Pb collisions, for which a general consensus does not yet exist. It is shown that the measured source sizes increase with charged-particle multiplicity and decrease with increasing pair transverse momentum. These trends for K K are similar to the ones observed earlier in identical charged-pion and $${\text{K}}_{\text{s}}^{0}{\text{K}}_{\text{s}}^{0}$$ correlations in Pb–Pb collisions at various energies and in $\textit{π}$ $\textit{π}$ correlations in p–Pb collisions at $$\sqrt{{s}_{\text{NN}}}=5.02$$ TeV. At comparable multiplicity, the source sizes measured in p–Pb collisions agree within uncertainties with those observed in pp collisions, and there is an indication that they are smaller than those observed in Pb–Pb collisions. The obtained results are also compared with predictions from the hadronic interaction model EPOS 3, which tends to underestimate the source size for the most central collisions and agrees with the data for semicentral and peripheral events. Furthermore, the time of maximal emission for kaons is extracted. It turns out to be comparable with the value obtained in highly peripheral Pb–Pb collisions at the same energy, indicating that the kaon emission evolution is similar to that in p–Pb collisions.
