<p>Heavy particle effective theory applied to spinning black holes provides a natural framework in which propagators linearize and numerators exponentiate. In this work, we exploit these two features to introduce Kerr generating functions, which describe the scattering of any probe on a Kerr black hole background to all loop orders. These generating functions can be used to perform the tensor reduction of multiloop integrands simply by differentiation with respect to the spin. As a first application of the Kerr generating functions, we study the leading nonlinear tidal effects of a neutron star in a Kerr black hole background. We organize the integrand by the helicity configuration of the exchanged gravitons and provide compact all-loop-order results for several helicity sectors and a full four-loop <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mi mathvariant="script">O</mi><mo stretchy="false">(</mo><msup><mi>G</mi><mn>5</mn></msup><mo stretchy="false">)</mo></math> result for the leading nonlinear tidal operators.</p>

Hidden simplicity in the scattering for neutron stars and black holes

Emitted radiation and absorption effects in black hole dynamics lead to inelastic scattering amplitudes. In this paper, we study how these effects introduce an inelasticity function to the 2 → 2 eikonalised $\textit{S}$-matrix and how they can be described using unequal mass and spin on-shell amplitudes. To achieve this, we formulate the inelastic coupled-channel eikonal (ICCE) using the KMOC formalism and the language of quantum channels, where off-diagonal channels involve mass and spin changes. This formulation allows us to re-use usual eikonal results but also suggests a different resummation of inelastic effects. We then apply this formulation to calculate classical inelastic processes, such as the mass change in binary dynamics due to the presence of an event horizon. Additionally, we provide a complementary analysis for the case of wave scattering on a black hole, considering absorption effects. In both scenarios, we derive unitarity relations accounting for inelastic effects.

Inelastic coupled-channel eikonal scattering

Starting with on-shell amplitudes compatible with the scattering of Kerr black holes up to Compton-amplitude contact terms, we produce the gravitational waveform and memory effect including spin at their leading post-Minkowskian orders to all orders in the spins of both scattering objects. For the memory effect, we present results at next-to-leading order as well, finding a closed form for all spin orders when the spins are anti-aligned and equal in magnitude. Considering instead generically oriented spins, we produce the next-to-leading-order memory to sixth order in spin. Compton-amplitude contact terms up to sixth order in spin are included throughout our analysis.

Leading-order gravitational radiation to all spin orders

We study gravitational absorption effects using effective on-shell scattering amplitudes. We develop an in-in probability-based framework involving plane- and partial-wave coherent states for the incoming wave to describe the interaction of the wave with a black hole or another compact object. We connect this framework to a simplified single-quantum analysis. The basic ingredients are mass-changing three-point amplitudes, which model the leading absorption effects and a spectral-density function of the black hole. As an application, we consider a non-spinning black hole that may start spinning as a consequence of the dynamics. The corresponding amplitudes are found to correspond to covariant spin-weighted spherical harmonics, the properties of which we formulate and make use of. We perform a matching calculation to general-relativity results at the cross-section level and derive the effective absorptive three-point couplings. They are found to behave as   <math> <mi>O</mi> <mfenced> <msubsup> <mi>G</mi> <mtext>Newton</mtext> <mrow> <mi>s</mi> <mo>+</mo> <mn>1</mn> </mrow> </msubsup> </mfenced> </math>  $$ \mathcal{O}\left({G}_{\textrm{Newton}}^{s+1}\right) $$ , where s is the spin of the outgoing massive state.

Gravitational partial-wave absorption from scattering amplitudes

Pair production of heavy vector bosons is a key process at colliders: it allows to test our understanding of the Standard Model and to explore the existence of new physics through precision measurements of production rates and differential distributions. New physics effects can be subtle and often require observables specifically designed for their detection. In this study, we focus on quantum information observables that characterise the spin states of the final diboson system. We analyse concurrence bounds, purity, and Bell inequalities for a bipartite qutrit system representing two massive gauge bosons. Our findings show that quantum spin observables can serve as complementary probes for heavy new physics as parametrised by higher dimensional operators in the Standard Model effective field theory. In particular, we find that these observables offer increased sensitivity to operators whose contributions do not interfere with the Standard Model amplitudes at the level of differential cross sections.

Probing new physics through entanglement in diboson production

We explore the impact of Renormalisation Group (RG) effects in the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT) interpretations of LHC measurements. We implement the RG running and mixing for the Wilson coefficients as obtained from the one-loop anomalous dimension matrix in the SMEFT into a Monte Carlo generator. This allows to consistently predict and combine in global fits collider observables characterised by different scales. As a showcase, we examine the impact of RG running in the strong coupling on the SMEFT predictions for   <math> <mi>t</mi> <mover> <mi>t</mi> <mo>¯</mo> </mover> </math>  $$ t\overline{t} $$  production cross sections and differential distributions as well as on the bounds on the Wilson coefficients that can be obtained from current LHC data.

Renormalisation group effects on SMEFT interpretations of LHC data

We calculate the scattering amplitude of two rotating objects with the linear-in-curvature spin-induced multipoles of Kerr black holes at <math><mi>O</mi><mo>(</mo><msup><mi>G</mi><mn>2</mn></msup><mo>)</mo></math> and all orders in the spins of both objects. This is done including the complete set of contact terms potentially relevant to Kerr-black-hole scattering at <math><mi>O</mi><mo>(</mo><msup><mi>G</mi><mn>2</mn></msup><mo>)</mo></math>. As such, Kerr black holes should be described by this scattering amplitude for a specific choice of values for the contact-term coefficients. The inclusion of all potential contact terms means this amplitude allows for a comprehensive search for structures emerging for certain values of the coefficients, and hence special properties that might be exhibited by Kerr-black-hole scattering. Our result can also act as a template for comparison for future computations of classical gravitational high-spin scattering.

Classical gravitational scattering amplitude at <math><mi>O</mi><mo>(</mo><msup><mi>G</mi><mn>2</mn></msup><msubsup><mi>S</mi><mn>1</mn><mi>∞</mi></msubsup><msubsup><mi>S</mi><mn>2</mn><mi>∞</mi></msubsup><mo>)</mo></math>

We study four top quark production at hadron colliders in the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT). We perform an analysis at the tree-level, including all possible QCD- and EW-coupling orders and relevant dimension-six operators. We find several cases where formally subleading terms give rise to significant contributions, potentially providing sensitivity to a broad class of operators. Inclusive and differential predictions are presented for the LHC and a future pp circular collider operating at 100 TeV. We estimate the sensitivity of different operators and perform a simplified chi-square fit to set limits on SMEFT Wilson coefficients. In so doing, we assess the importance of including subleading terms and differential information in constraining new physics contributions. Finally, we compute the SMEFT predictions for the double insertion of dimension-six operators and scrutinise the possible enhancements to the sensitivity induced by a specific class of higher order terms in the EFT series.

Complete SMEFT predictions for four top quark production at hadron colliders

Making use of the recently derived, all-spin, opposite-helicity Compton amplitude, we calculate the classical gravitational scattering amplitude for one spinning and one spinless object at <math><mi>O</mi><mo>(</mo><msup><mi>G</mi><mn>2</mn></msup><mo>)</mo></math> and all orders in spin. By construction, this amplitude exhibits the spin structure that has been conjectured to describe Kerr black holes. This spin structure alone is not enough to fix all deformations of the Compton amplitude by contact terms, but when combined with considerations of the ultrarelativistic limit we can uniquely assign values to the parameters remaining in the even-in-spin sector. Once these parameters are determined, much of the spin dependence of the amplitude resums into hypergeometric functions. Finally, we derive the eikonal phase for aligned-angular-momentum scattering.

Classical Gravitational Spinning-Spinless Scattering at <math><mrow><mi>O</mi><mo>(</mo><msup><mrow><mi>G</mi></mrow><mrow><mn>2</mn></mrow></msup><msup><mrow><mi>S</mi></mrow><mrow><mi>∞</mi></mrow></msup><mo>)</mo></mrow></math>

Quantum information observables, such as entanglement measures, provide a powerful way to characterize the properties of quantum states. We propose to use them to probe the structure of fundamental interactions and to search for new physics at high energy. Inspired by recent proposals to measure entanglement of top quark pairs produced at the LHC, we examine how higher-dimensional operators in the framework of the Standard Model effective field theory modify the Standard Model expectations. We explore two regions of interest in the phase space where the Standard Model produces maximally entangled states: at threshold and in the high-energy limit. We unveil a nontrivial pattern of effects, which depend on the initial state partons, <math><mrow><mi>q</mi><mover><mrow><mi>q</mi></mrow><mrow><mo>¯</mo></mrow></mover></mrow></math> or <math><mi>g</mi><mi>g</mi></math>, on whether only linear or up to quadratic Standard Model effective field theory contributions are included, and on the phase space region. In general, we find that higher-dimensional effects lower the entanglement predicted in the Standard Model.
