Studying heavy-flavor jets in <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mi>p</mi><mi>p</mi></math> collisions is important since it can test perturbative QCD calculations and be used as a reference for heavy-ion collisions. Jets in this analysis are reconstructed from charged particles using the anti-<math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><msub><mi>k</mi><mi mathvariant="normal">T</mi></msub></math> algorithm with a resolution parameter <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mi>R</mi><mo>=</mo><mn>0.4</mn></math> at midrapidity <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mo stretchy="false">|</mo><mi>η</mi><mo stretchy="false">|</mo><mo>&lt;</mo><mn>0.5</mn></math>. Beauty jets are tagged using a machine learning model that uses a convolutional neural network trained on information extracted from the jet, tracks, and secondary vertices. Results show that this model is superior in b-jet-tagging compared to other traditional tagging methods.

This paper presents a fully corrected measurement of the energy-energy correlator (EEC) within jets in pp collisions. The EEC traces the energy flow as a highly energetic parton undergoes a QCD shower followed by the confinement of partons into hadrons, probing the correlation function of the energy flow inside jets. The EEC observable is measured as a function of the charged particle pair angular distance, <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><msub><mi>R</mi><mi mathvariant="normal">L</mi></msub></math>, for <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mrow><mn>20</mn><mo>&lt;</mo><msubsup><mrow><mi>p</mi></mrow><mrow><mi mathvariant="normal">T</mi></mrow><mrow><mi>ch</mi><mtext> </mtext><mi>jet</mi></mrow></msubsup><mo>&lt;</mo><mrow><mn>80</mn><mtext> </mtext><mtext> </mtext><mi>GeV</mi><mo>/</mo><mi>c</mi></mrow></mrow></math>. In the perturbative region (large <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><msub><mi>R</mi><mi mathvariant="normal">L</mi></msub></math>), a good agreement between the data and a next-to-leading-log perturbative QCD calculation is observed. In the nonperturbative region (small <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><msub><mi>R</mi><mi mathvariant="normal">L</mi></msub></math>), the data exhibit a linear <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><msub><mi>R</mi><mi mathvariant="normal">L</mi></msub></math> dependence. There is a transition region in between, characterized by a turnover in the EEC distribution, indicating where hadronization effects begin to dominate. The peak of this transition region is located at <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mn>2.43</mn><mo>±</mo><mn>0.14</mn><mtext> </mtext><mtext> </mtext><mrow><mi>GeV</mi><mo>/</mo><mi>c</mi></mrow><mo>/</mo><mo stretchy="false">⟨</mo><msubsup><mi>p</mi><mi mathvariant="normal">T</mi><mrow><mi>ch</mi><mtext> </mtext><mi>jet</mi></mrow></msubsup><mo stretchy="false">⟩</mo></math> for jets of various energies, indicating a common energy scale for the hadronization process. State-of-the-art Monte Carlo event generators are compared with the measurements, and can be used to constrain the parton shower and hadronization mechanisms.

Exposing the parton-hadron transition within jets with energy-energy correlators in pp collisions at <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><msqrt><mi>s</mi></msqrt><mo>=</mo><mn>5.02</mn><mtext> </mtext><mtext> </mtext><mi>TeV</mi></math>

The gauge principle is a cornerstone of particle-physics model building. Nevertheless, many constructions leave certain global <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mi>U</mi><mo stretchy="false">(</mo><mn>1</mn><mo stretchy="false">)</mo></math> redundancies ungauged. In this work, we take the gauge principle to its logical extreme by promoting all <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mi>S</mi><mi>U</mi><mo stretchy="false">(</mo><mi>N</mi><mo stretchy="false">)</mo></math> symmetries to <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mi>U</mi><mo stretchy="false">(</mo><mi>N</mi><mo stretchy="false">)</mo></math>. We focus on a model based on local <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mi>U</mi><mo stretchy="false">(</mo><mn>3</mn><mo stretchy="false">)</mo><mo>×</mo><mi>U</mi><mo stretchy="false">(</mo><mn>2</mn><mo stretchy="false">)</mo></math> invariance. This framework accounts for several otherwise ad hoc features of the Standard Model, including charge quantization and the observed hypercharge assignments, which emerge here as unique predictions. Furthermore, the internal consistency of the model requires the introduction of right-handed neutrinos and implies the presence of an additional <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mi>U</mi><mo stretchy="false">(</mo><mn>1</mn><mo stretchy="false">)</mo></math> factor that can be identified with <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mi>B</mi><mo>−</mo><mi>L</mi></math>, thereby naturally yielding nonzero neutrino masses. In light of these findings, we hypothesize that <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mi>U</mi><mo stretchy="false">(</mo><mn>3</mn><mo stretchy="false">)</mo><mo>×</mo><mi>U</mi><mo stretchy="false">(</mo><mn>2</mn><mo stretchy="false">)</mo></math> constitutes the underlying symmetry of the strong and electroweak interactions. More importantly, our approach opens up novel avenues for model building, driven by this extended interpretation of the gauge principle.

Within a Bethe-Salpeter model, we investigate the production of possible <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><msub><mi>D</mi><mi>s</mi></msub><msub><mover accent="true"><mi>D</mi><mo stretchy="false">¯</mo></mover><mi>s</mi></msub></math> <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mo stretchy="false">(</mo><msub><mi>X</mi><mrow><mi>s</mi><mover accent="true"><mi>s</mi><mo stretchy="false">¯</mo></mover></mrow></msub><mo stretchy="false">)</mo></math> and <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mi>D</mi><mover accent="true"><mi>D</mi><mo stretchy="false">¯</mo></mover></math> <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mo stretchy="false">(</mo><msub><mi>X</mi><mrow><mi>q</mi><mover accent="true"><mi>q</mi><mo stretchy="false">¯</mo></mover></mrow></msub><mo stretchy="false">)</mo></math> bound states in <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mi>B</mi></math> decays. The bound state properties of the two heavy meson systems are studied in the one-boson-exchange kernel, and the resulting normalized Bethe-Salpeter wave functions are used to calculate the branching fractions of <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><msup><mi>B</mi><mo>+</mo></msup><mo stretchy="false">→</mo><msub><mi>X</mi><mrow><mi>s</mi><mover accent="true"><mi>s</mi><mo stretchy="false">¯</mo></mover></mrow></msub><msup><mi>K</mi><mo>+</mo></msup></math> and <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><msup><mi>B</mi><mo>+</mo></msup><mo stretchy="false">→</mo><msub><mi>X</mi><mrow><mi>q</mi><mover accent="true"><mi>q</mi><mo stretchy="false">¯</mo></mover></mrow></msub><msup><mi>K</mi><mo>+</mo></msup></math>. We find that bound-state solutions for the <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mi>D</mi><mover accent="true"><mi>D</mi><mo stretchy="false">¯</mo></mover></math> system exist for all three coupling sets considered, whereas the <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><msub><mi>D</mi><mi>s</mi></msub><msub><mover accent="true"><mi>D</mi><mo stretchy="false">¯</mo></mover><mi>s</mi></msub></math> system supports a bound state solution only in a restricted parameter region. The predicted branching fractions are in the ranges of <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mn>1.09</mn><mo>×</mo><msup><mn>10</mn><mrow><mo>−</mo><mn>5</mn></mrow></msup><mi>–</mi><mn>20.06</mn><mo>×</mo><msup><mn>10</mn><mrow><mo>−</mo><mn>4</mn></mrow></msup></math> for the <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><msub><mi>D</mi><mi>s</mi></msub><msub><mover accent="true"><mi>D</mi><mo stretchy="false">¯</mo></mover><mi>s</mi></msub></math> bound state and <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mn>1.56</mn><mo>×</mo><msup><mn>10</mn><mrow><mo>−</mo><mn>6</mn></mrow></msup><mi>–</mi><mn>4.14</mn><mo>×</mo><msup><mn>10</mn><mrow><mo>−</mo><mn>4</mn></mrow></msup></math> for the <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mi>D</mi><mover accent="true"><mi>D</mi><mo stretchy="false">¯</mo></mover></math> bound state. In particular, if <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mi>X</mi><mo stretchy="false">(</mo><mn>3915</mn><mo stretchy="false">)</mo></math> is interpreted as a predominantly <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><msub><mi>D</mi><mi>s</mi></msub><msub><mover accent="true"><mi>D</mi><mo stretchy="false">¯</mo></mover><mi>s</mi></msub></math> bound state, its production branching fraction in <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mi>B</mi></math> decay is found to be <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mn>5.79</mn><mo>×</mo><msup><mn>10</mn><mrow><mo>−</mo><mn>4</mn></mrow></msup></math>.

Production of <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><msub><mi>D</mi><mi>s</mi></msub><msub><mover accent="true"><mi>D</mi><mo stretchy="false">¯</mo></mover><mi>s</mi></msub></math> and <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mi>D</mi><mover accent="true"><mi>D</mi><mo stretchy="false">¯</mo></mover></math> bound states in the <math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mi>B</mi></math> decays within the Bethe-Salpeter framework

We study in the bottom-up framework the possibility to generate the quark mass hierarchies without severe fine-tuning, the quark mixing and CP-violation (CPV) in a flavour model with $$S^\prime _4$$ modular symmetry having minimal number of parameters. The model is considered in the vicinity of the fixed point $$\tau _\text {T}= i\infty $$ , $$\tau _\text {vev} \sim \tau _\text {T}$$ , $$\tau _\text {vev}$$ being the vacuum expectation value (VEV) of the modulus $$\tau $$ , which allows to explain the hierarchies of the quark masses. The ten quark observables are described effectively by nine real parameters. The CP-symmetry is broken explicitly since, as is well known, reproducing the observed CPV in the quark sector in the case of spontaneous breaking of CP-symmetry by $$\tau _\text {vev}$$ is highly problematic in the class of minimal modular quark flavour models (explaining the quark mass hierarchies without fine-tuning) of the type we consider. We perform a statistical analysis of the model and show that it is phenomenologically viable and consistent, in particular, with the “inclusive” decay data on the $$|V_{ub}|$$ and $$|V_{cb}|$$ elements of the CKM matrix and, in the case of a very high scale of supersymmetry breaking, with the current “average” experimental values of $$|V_{ub}|$$ and $$|V_{cb}|$$ .

$$S^\prime _4$$ quark flavour model in the vicinity of the fixed point $$\tau = i\infty $$

A search is presented for massive narrow-width resonances in the mass range of 1–4.5 $$\,\text {Te\hspace{-.08em}V}$$ , decaying into pairs of Higgs bosons (HH). The search uses proton–proton collision data at a center-of-mass energy of 13 $$\,\text {Te\hspace{-.08em}V}$$ collected with the CMS detector at the CERN LHC during 2016–2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 $$\,\text {fb}^{-1}$$ . The analysis targets final states where one Higgs boson decays into a pair of bottom quarks and the other into a pair of tau leptons, $$\text {X}\rightarrow \text {HH}\rightarrow \text {b}\bar{\text {b}}\,\tau ^{+}\tau ^{-}$$ . It uses a single large radius jet to reconstruct the $$\text {H}\rightarrow \text {b}\bar{\text {b}}$$ decay, while the $$\text {H}\rightarrow \tau ^{+}\tau ^{-}$$ decay products can either be contained within a single large radius jet or appear as two isolated tau leptons. The observed data are consistent with standard model background expectations. Upper limits at 95% confidence level are set on the production cross section for resonant HHproduction for masses between 1 and 4.5 $$\,\text {Te\hspace{-.08em}V}$$ . This analysis sets the most sensitive limits to date on $$\text {X}\rightarrow \text {HH}\rightarrow \text {b}\bar{\text {b}}\, \tau ^{+}\tau ^{-}$$ decays in the mass range of 1.4–4.5 $$\,\text {Te\hspace{-.08em}V}$$ .
