We find that different asymptotic measurements in quantum field theory can be related to one another through new versions of crossing symmetry. Assuming analyticity, we conjecture generalized crossing relations for multi-particle processes and the corresponding paths of analytic continuation. We prove them to all multiplicity at tree-level in quantum field theory and string theory. We illustrate how to practically perform analytic continuations on loop-level examples using different methods, including unitarity cuts and differential equations. We study the extent to which anomalous thresholds away from the usual physical region can cause an analytic obstruction to crossing when massless particles are involved. In an appendix, we review and streamline historical proofs of four-particle crossing symmetry in gapped theories.

Crossing beyond scattering amplitudes

We reformulate the analysis of singularities of Feynman integrals in a way that can be practically applied to perturbative computations in the standard model in dimensional regularization. After highlighting issues in the textbook treatment of Landau singularities, we develop an algorithm for classifying and computing them using techniques from computational algebraic geometry. We introduce an algebraic variety called the principal Landau determinant, which captures the singularities even in the presence of massless particles or UV/IR divergences. We illustrate this for 114 example diagrams, including a cutting-edge 2-loop 5-point nonplanar QCD process with multiple mass scales.

Landau Singularities Revisited: Computational Algebraic Geometry for Feynman Integrals

We consider asymptotic observables in quantum field theories in which the S-matrix makes sense. We argue that in addition to scattering amplitudes, a whole compendium of inclusive observables exists where the time-ordering is relaxed. These include expectation values of electromagnetic or gravitational radiation fields as well as out-of-time-order amplitudes. We explain how to calculate them in two ways: by relating them to amplitudes and products of amplitudes, and by using a generalization of the LSZ reduction formula. As an application, we discuss one-loop master integrals contributing to gravitational radiation in the post-Minkowski expansion, emphasizing the role of classical cut contributions and highlighting the different infrared physics of in-in observables.

What can be measured asymptotically?

Recent advances in machine learning establish the ability of certain neural-network architectures called neural operators to approximate maps between function spaces. Motivated by a prospect of employing them in fundamental physics, we examine applications to scattering processes in quantum mechanics. We use an iterated variant of Fourier neural operators to learn the physics of Schrödinger operators, which map from the space of initial wave functions and potentials to the final wave functions. These deep operator learning ideas are put to test in two concrete out-of-distribution problems: a neural operator predicting the time evolution of a wave packet scattering off a central potential in <math><mn>1</mn><mo>+</mo><mn>1</mn></math> dimensions, and the double-slit experiment in <math><mn>2</mn><mo>+</mo><mn>1</mn></math> dimensions. At inference, neural operators can become orders of magnitude more efficient compared to traditional finite-difference solvers.

Scattering with neural operators

Celestial holography expresses   <math> <mi>S</mi> </math>  $$ \mathcal{S} $$ -matrix elements as correlators in a CFT living on the night sky. Poincaré invariance imposes additional selection rules on the allowed positions of operators. As a consequence, n-point correlators are only supported on certain patches of the celestial sphere, depending on the labeling of each operator as incoming/outgoing. Here we initiate a study of the celestial geometry, examining the kinematic support of celestial amplitudes for different crossing channels. We give simple geometric rules for determining this support. For n ≥ 5, we can view these channels as tiling together to form a covering of the celestial sphere. Our analysis serves as a stepping off point to better understand the analyticity of celestial correlators and illuminate the connection between the 4D kinematic and 2D CFT notions of crossing symmetry.

Celestial geometry

Scattering amplitudes in quantum field theories have intricate analytic properties as functions of the energies and momenta of the scattered particles. In perturbation theory, their singularities are governed by a set of nonlinear polynomial equations, known as Landau equations, for each individual Feynman diagram. The singularity locus of the associated Feynman integral is made precise with the notion of the Landau discriminant, which characterizes when the Landau equations admit a solution. In order to compute this discriminant, we present approaches from classical elimination theory, as well as a numerical algorithm based on homotopy continuation. These methods allow us to compute Landau discriminants of various Feynman diagrams up to 3 loops, which were previously out of reach. For instance, the Landau discriminant of the envelope diagram is a reducible surface of degree 45 in the three-dimensional space of kinematic invariants. We investigate geometric properties of the Landau discriminant, such as irreducibility, dimension and degree. In particular, we find simple examples in which the Landau discriminant has codimension greater than one. Furthermore, we describe a numerical procedure for determining which parts of the Landau discriminant lie in the physical regions. In order to study degenerate limits of Landau equations and bounds on the degree of the Landau discriminant, we introduce Landau polytopes and study their facet structure. Finally, we provide an efficient numerical algorithm for the computation of the number of master integrals based on the connection to algebraic statistics. The algorithms used in this work are implemented in the open-source Julia package Landau.jl available at  https://mathrepo.mis.mpg.de/Landau/  .

Landau discriminants

We introduce a class of polytopes that concisely capture the structure of UV and IR divergences of general Feynman integrals in Schwinger parameter space, treating them in a unified way as worldline segments shrinking and expanding at different relative rates. While these polytopes conventionally arise as convex hulls—via Newton polytopes of Symanzik polynomials—we show that they also have a remarkably simple dual description as cut out by linear inequalities defining the facets. It is this dual definition that makes it possible to transparently understand and efficiently compute leading UV and IR divergences for any Feynman integral. In the case of the UV, this provides a transparent geometric understanding of the familiar nested and overlapping divergences. In the IR, the polytope exposes a new perspective on soft/collinear singularities and their intricate generalizations. Tropical geometry furnishes a simple framework for calculating the leading UV/IR divergences of any Feynman integral, associating them with the volumes of certain dual cones. As concrete applications, we generalize Weinberg’s theorem to include a characterization of IR divergences, and classify space-time dimensions in which general IR divergences (logarithmic as well as power-law) can occur. We also compute the leading IR divergence of rectangular fishnet diagrams at all loop orders, which turn out to have a surprisingly simple combinatorial description.

Feynman polytopes and the tropical geometry of UV and IR divergences

Four-particle tree-level scattering amplitudes in string theory are magically consistent with unitarity, reflected in the non-trivial fact that beneath the critical dimension, the residues of the amplitudes on massive poles can be expanded in partial waves with all positive coefficients. While this follows (rather indirectly) from the no-ghost theorem, the simplicity of the statement and its fundamental importance for the physical consistency of string theory begs for a more direct and elementary understanding. In this note we take a step in this direction by presenting a new expression for the partial wave coefficients of string amplitudes, given by surprisingly simple double/triple contour integrals for open/closed strings. This representation allows us to directly prove unitarity of all superstring theories in D ≤ 6 spacetime dimensions, and can also be used to determine various asymptotics of the partial waves at large mass levels.

On unitarity of tree-level string amplitudes

Crossing symmetry asserts that particles are indistinguishable from antiparticles traveling back in time. In quantum field theory, this statement translates to the long-standing conjecture that probabilities for observing the two scenarios in a scattering experiment are described by one and the same function. Why could we expect it to be true? In this work we examine this question in a simplified setup and take steps towards illuminating a possible physical interpretation of crossing symmetry. To be more concrete, we consider planar scattering amplitudes involving any number of particles with arbitrary spins and masses to all loop orders in perturbation theory. We show that by deformations of the external momenta one can smoothly interpolate between pairs of crossing channels without encountering singularities or violating mass-shell conditions and momentum conservation. The analytic continuation can be realized using two types of moves. The first one makes use of an <math><mi>i</mi><mi>ϵ</mi></math> prescription for avoiding singularities near the physical kinematics and allows us to adjust the momenta of the external particles relative to one another within their light cones. The second, more violent, step involves a rotation of subsets of particle momenta via their complexified light cones from the future to the past and vice versa. We show that any singularity along such a deformation would have to correspond to two beams of particles scattering off each other. For planar Feynman diagrams, these kinds of singularities are absent because of the particular flow of energies through their propagators. We prescribe a five-step sequence of such moves that combined together proves crossing symmetry for planar scattering amplitudes in perturbation theory, paving a way towards settling this question for more general scattering processes in quantum field theories.

Crossing symmetry in the planar limit

We investigate configuration-space integrals over punctured Riemann spheres from the viewpoint of the motivic Galois coaction and double-copy structures generalizing the Kawai-Lewellen-Tye (KLT) relations in string theory. For this purpose, explicit bases of twisted cycles and cocycles are worked out whose orthonormality simplifies the coaction. We present methods to efficiently perform and organize the expansions of configuration-space integrals in the inverse string tension α′ or the dimensional-regularization parameter ϵ of Feynman integrals. Generating-function techniques open up a new perspective on the coaction of multiple polylogarithms in any number of variables and analytic continuations in the unintegrated punctures. We present a compact recursion for a generalized KLT kernel and discuss its origin from intersection numbers of Stasheff polytopes and its implications for correlation functions of two-dimensional conformal field theories. We find a non-trivial example of correlation functions in (  <math> <mi>p</mi> </math>  $$ \mathfrak{p} $$  , 2) minimal models, which can be normalized to become uniformly transcendental in the   <math> <mi>p</mi> </math>  $$ \mathfrak{p} $$  → ∞ limit.
